Anyone else never moisturise their face?

I'm 58, have never bothered. I wear factor 50 in the summer, mostly anyway. I think I look pretty much exactly my age. Anyone else? Just curious, that's all

I find this interesting as if I dont my skin feels
'wrong'. Tight and dehydrated. i wonder if this is how your skin feels all the time and you dont know or if your norm is my norm? what does it feel like if you do moisturise?

The few times I have moisturised I don't feel any different. That's why I don't bother

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 19/02/2023 23:01

I never moisturise, and I don't wear make up - for sensory reasons. I hate the feel of stuff on my skin. I can only just tolerate sun cream when I have to.

I have no idea how I look for my age, I think I look ok, it's not something that really bothers me.

SwedishEdith · 19/02/2023 23:06

My skin isn't dry but it feels tight after washing so moisturiser stops that feeling (only cheap Nivea). I'm sure if I left it 10 minutes or so, that feeling might stop but moisturiser takes 10 seconds and feels nice.

If I remember! So probably once or twice a week

I use lotion on my body only after shaving my legs Blush

bluetongue · 19/02/2023 23:12

The only moisturizer I use is one with 50+ sun protection as ‘normal’ sunscreen causes my skin to break out. As my skin is oily and prone to acne I’m trying to dry it out more most of the time.

PlatinumBrunette · 19/02/2023 23:13

Nope. I wash my face with water only. The only time I moisturise is if I’ve (rarely) worn makeup and the gunk to remove it seems so drying. So then I use moisturiser. Then I break out. Great!

A scientist told me something interesting - only oil/cream derived from animals will actually be absorbed into your skin. Vegetable oil penetrates the topmost, mainly dead layer, and mineral oils just sit on top.

whatsup00 · 19/02/2023 23:51

I've used a moisturiser almost every day since I was 12.
I just wash my face with water though mostly.

I don't use anything harsh on it.

The moisturiser I use is unfragranced and light.

Cuppsoupmonster · 20/02/2023 00:07

oddly, wearing foundation is actually very good for your skin - it acts as a barrier and protects it from pollutants and free radicals plus it often has an SPF

Ireallydohope · 20/02/2023 00:19

But wearing factor 50 is exactly like moisturising which means that you do

Yes I've worn foundation practically every day of my life and don't have a single wrinkle in my 50's

Ireallydohope · 20/02/2023 00:21

Well since I was around 14

CheeseMeltCracker · 20/02/2023 00:53

@MistyGreenAndBlue @doadeer

I agree that people can have “off” expectations of what a person of a certain age will look like.

I wonder if this has something to do with previous generations looking old before their time though through hard lives, lack of nutrition and high quality public health information

E.g I’m thirties, my mum is 60s and when we look at pictures of my grandmother (mum’s mum) when she was same age as my mum is now, there is no comparison!

My grandmother had a white cauliflower perm, false teeth, oversized varifocals, and very lined skin (moderate smoker for decades) plus clothing that was not well fitting.

Whereas my mum is now that age and has (died) blond hair, thought out clothes and accessories, nails done, makeup, much less wrinkly, own teeth, contact lenses etc.

True, but I only do this in the summer, and not every day, only if it is sunny

I do and have so from my teens. I have dry tight skin and eczema and i control it by creaming up. I hate going swimming and spas because of this. I cream up immediately after im out of the bath/shower

To me having wrinkles or not doesn't actually make me live longer

Sure people can think I look older if I had them but won't change my actual age

That's an excellent point.

Fwiw until quite recently, I was always told I looked much younger than my age despite the moisturizing etc.., I still had a pretty shit chronic illness that limited both my life and my quality of life.

MyriadOfTravels · 20/02/2023 11:01

@CheeseMeltCracker what stands out from your description is that most of those are basically things. Hair colour that 'makes people look younger', nice manucure, colthes.... I'd nearly say all this is the sign of wealth rather than health or healthy aging.

You can see that all around you. People not wanting to look old - so they die their hair, have botox and so on... People insisting that the 60s is the new 40s and so on.
We seem to all have a major issue with getting old and refusing to acknowledge that and it comes out in yes, hair colour, manucure, clothes. People avoid false teeth and have implants very early on.

And with all that, the healthspan has slightly increased since the 1950 but nowhere near the way lifespan has increased. We are getting older, spending more time with chronic illnesses whilst doing our best to still look young.

Oldraver · 20/02/2023 16:33

I never used to as my skills b was prone to be oily and very reactive to any potions

The last few years it's become very dry and I've found something that doesn't feel like it's stripping my face

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 20/02/2023 16:42

OzzyOzworn · 19/02/2023 22:11

Me!! Super lazy!always fall asleep with makeup-remove it in the morning :/42 and get regularly get ID’d. Look early 20s. Don’t deserve it maybe it will catch up on me. Drinking lots of water may help. No idea! Think it’s genetics

Ah come on now. No 42 year old looks like they're in their early 20s.

I know some people who are delusional and say that they have no wrinkles and will drone on that someone thought they were 10 years younger. And they do need moisturizer despite them insisting they dont. Would love to see the posters on here that say the same.😂

This made me laugh out loud! I feel the same way. I am OBSESSED with skin care stuff and I have no wrinkles. I am almost 35. Tbh, although I pile on the vitamin c serum and a retinol and all that stuff the main thing people need is a good spf. I despair at the people saying they only use it in summer, I wear spf 50 every day under my makeup (which also has an spf in it!). I know way too many people who have had skin cancer to risk it (also no one wants to look haggard lbr).

I also drink a lot of water which helps my skin too. Skincare is my favourite indulgence and I spend a lot of money on it, but I love the growth of more budget brands like The Ordinary and Inkey List.

Cuppsoupmonster · 20/02/2023 20:21

I have always used skincare but nothing mega special, Nivea/Simple and Clinique when I’m feeling flush. But I’ve moisturised every day since early teens, don’t ever let myself sun burn and have a pretty good diet with lots of good fats. My friends who used just water or a baby wipe for years now have fine lines and jowly type skin and we’re only in our early 30s!

Having good skin isn’t the same as looking young. People who look young often do because they have very tiny facial features
and small mouths, giving a more child like look. They’re often short and slight as well.

Zanatdy · 20/02/2023 20:32

I didn’t for years but started a skin care routine in covid and my skins so much better. I’d have started much younger if I knew the difference it would make after a couple of months

adrianmolesmole · 20/02/2023 21:09

I do everyday, face and body. I have very dry skin with a tendency to get eczema if I don't. I have zero wrinkles (45+) so that's an upside to having to keep the shitty eczema at bay.

ladybood · 20/02/2023 21:09

Every single day and have done for years
