Anyone else never moisturise their face?

I'm 58, have never bothered. I wear factor 50 in the summer, mostly anyway. I think I look pretty much exactly my age. Anyone else? Just curious, that's all

@BertieBotts I find it very odd that people don't moisturise. Each to their own of course but to me it's a bit like discussing whether you should have to pass a driving test before you're legally allowed to drive - in other words - something completely unquestionably normal to me.

SuperTrooper7 · 19/02/2023 12:17

On 10 Years Younger they always berate the participants for washing their face with soap and not using moisturiser. I think most of the time it's more sun damage and smoking.

StickofVeg · 19/02/2023 12:21

I don't moisturize my face or any other part of my body and only use soap (no special creams/liquids/makeup). I guess I look my age, I'm 58, but I don't think I'm have many wrinkles either. DH and I did have a conversation this morning about how much money we've not spent on face creams and air fresheners (something else I don't buy) over the years!

This is a strange comparison to me… I don’t moisturise because it makes me break out in spots - very sensitive skin.
I don’t think this makes me odd or like wanting to drive without a license!

PauliesWalnuts · 19/02/2023 12:25

I don’t - I don’t even own any. I have really oil skin thanks to PCOS so I just cleanse with micellar water. My face feels like an oil slick if I moisturise. On the plus side, I’m 50 but don’t have wrinkles thanks to this and fair skin that burns if I go near a window on a sunny day.

TheLostNights · 19/02/2023 12:26

I'm 37 and get told I look late teens/early twenties which I hate.
Never done anything to my face but washed it. It's all genetics. My parents are the same

Cuppsoupmonster · 19/02/2023 11:55

Me too! Moisturised with Nivea Soft every day since I was about 12/13. I’m early 30s now and don’t even have frown lines!

I'm mid thirties and not a whisper of a wrinkle and I've never moisturised.

Because moisturiser is pretty much bugger all to do with wrinkles, next to sun cream and genetics.

angieloumc · 19/02/2023 12:30

I moisturise my face but that's it can't bear the feeling of stickiness on my body. Unless anyone can recommend an actual non sticky body lotion!

It does seem slightly ridiculous (unless for medical reasons) to wash away all your skins natural 'moisturisers' that we have evolved over thousands of years to produce, only to replace them with synthetic products.

I always think this too - I’m sure we’ll learn lots about the skin microbiome and how damaging it is to throw all these chemicals on our skin.

I think so too. Many of the chemicals are endocrine disruptors too, especially in things like sunscreen.

About six months ago I started using hyaluronic acid, for no real reason. I was 40, thought maybe I'd give it a go, even though my skin was actually very good.

It made my skin tingly and red, but I thought perhaps it was supposed to. Then after a few weeks I started to get spots, which I've never had a problem with, even as a teen. I realised last month that the redness and spots is actually rosacea.

I went to a dermatologist and now I'm using Soolantra to try to get rid of the rosacea. When I asked if this could have been caused by the hyaluronic acid, the dermatologist dismissed the idea. But as I understand it, Rosacea can be caused by an increase in demodex mites, potentially caused by damage to the skin cell barrier. Given that the only change I have made to my routine in years was the hyaluronic acid, I would not be surprised if it caused the damage.

My skin looks like shite at the moment, when it's always been clear and smooth. I'm cross with myself for falling for a bullshit beauty product.

MidgeHardcastle · 19/02/2023 12:45

Mid 60s, never moisturised just soap and water. My skin is soft and unwrinkled. Just like my mum, luck of the draw really!

Yes! I was same as you until I discovered Body Shop's body yoghurt. Amazing stuff that isn't oily and is absorbed in 60 seconds

DidyouNO · 19/02/2023 12:51

I do when I panic I'm getting older and it's lasts about 2 days, then I never do 😂

I'm a liar! Just checked my face and noticed a few lines! That'll teach me not to look in a mirror for decades 😱🤣

VladmirsPoutine · 19/02/2023 12:54

@Whu Fair enough, the driving thing was just to illustrate how normal it is to me. Mumsnet is like an education in to the lives of others most days!

Jodielou5972 · 19/02/2023 12:56

I have always suffered with eczema and allergies. I moisturise my whole body, face included, daily. Been ingrained into me since I was a child to make sure I'm moisturised!
I'm 30 and still get asked for ID. Whether that's genetics or face cream? Who knows.

doadeer · 19/02/2023 12:58

My skin was so dry as a teen. I remember frantically trying to rub off dry skin in the school toilets embarrassed.

If I didn't do anything to my skin it would look fine. But having a nice routine makes my skin really glow and I enjoy it. I'm early 30s and I notice lots of people my age with melasma and pigmentation starting to form and I religiously wear Spf and don't have any of this.

I've always drank loads of water and I don't drink alcohol so maybe this is a factor 🤷‍♀️

My DH is super dry, he needs to moisturise loads or his skin looks terrible.

PuppyMonkey · 19/02/2023 13:04

Come on then, post some pictures all you lot who reckon you’ve got great skin even though you’ve never used moisturiser.Grin

I know a lot of beauty products are bollocks but I love moisturising my face, makes my skin feel so nice and refreshed.

Neutrogena Norwegian formula. It's amazing. Light, non greasy, sinks in immediately, but leaves your skin feeling amazing for days.

SeemsSoUnfair · 19/02/2023 13:14

If you have dry skin or use makeup remove or cleansers that remove your natural oils then moisturer is probably a necessity. I rarely wear makeup, wash my face with water only, and dont have dry skin so dont even know if there is any benefit to me using moisturer on my face 🤷🏻‍♀️

I do use Dove shower wash on my body so that probably counts as moisturer.

Butterflywing · 19/02/2023 13:37

I was put off putting things on my face after the experience of a teenage friend who spent a fortune on beauty products and had the worst acne imaginable.

I never had spots and I didn't want to risk getting any so I never put anything on my face. I wash it gently with a bit of water, never soap as that would strip it of natural oils.

I put a light dabbing of factor 50 these days and make sure I drink plenty of water before I go to bed and after I wake up, as I don't want to be having to go to the loo much throughout the day.

I make sure I eat loads of veggies and get lots of fresh air when I can.

I am always being told I have lovely skin and I never wear make up. I am in my 60s.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/02/2023 13:41

I wash my face with water.
Rarely wear make-up. Tinted moisturiser feels heavy and plasticy on my face.

I'll occasionally wear moisturiser if my skin feels particularly dry- normally caused by strong winds or cold weather.

I wear suncream (30-50) Mar- Oct if I'm "outside", but not just passing through. I don't love it, but I want to protect my skin from long term damage. Moisturisers with SPF have an annoying smell which is distracting to keep on my face.

I was regularly IDed into my late 30s.

Selvana · 19/02/2023 14:54

Soap and water only here too, hate a feel of any products on my skin. Apparently I look younger than my age but I have been avoiding sun in recent years. Wrinkles only show near my eyes only when I smile.

Booooot · 19/02/2023 14:59

I have hyperhydrosis and moisturizer really sets it off, but I have good skin luckily. I might moisturize twice a month maybe when I’m having a pamper evening.

Smoothlines · 19/02/2023 15:14

No, I rarely do. I wear sun protection for nine months of the year if I go outside, though I definitely haven’t always done that. I suppose that’s a moisturiser. I’m 57 and I don’t have any wrinkles. I look a lot younger than my age -I was mistaken for a someone in their 30s recently. I don’t moisturise my body either. I sometimes do my hands, but only because I’ve usually been given some cream as a gift snd I need to use it up. I tend to think the more I use it, the drier my hands become.

Dareisayimonetoo · 19/02/2023 15:23

Very rarely, been pretty much the same all my life, haven’t worn much makeup other than a bit of mascara, eyeshadow and the odd lippy. Often told I look younger than my age, in my fifties, I do have huge bags under my eyes which I hate and buy glasses that hide them.

not a sun worshipper either, always worn a hat and sunglasses. Can’t stand sun cream so just try and avoid being out in really hot weather.
