When visiting someone’s house - do you read greetings cards?

You pop in to visit someone - there are cards sitting on display (Valentines on this occasion). Would it enter your mind to go and read the cards?

My mum does. She's a habitual line stepper though.

ShippingNews · 18/02/2023 21:33

No ! Maybe if I was visiting someone very close like my sister, but I wouldn't read anyone else's cards.

MintJulia · 18/02/2023 21:33

Yes, if they are obviously on display.

I can't imagine anyone would display a card that contained anything too intimate.

motherofkevinnotperry · 18/02/2023 21:34

No I find it very rude. My dmil does this constantly to us and comments. She also reads our mail. Not acceptable

GoldenGorilla · 18/02/2023 21:34

No, what a weird thing to do. I wouldn’t read their post or emails either.

Montague22 · 18/02/2023 21:34

No it’s nosey

plumduck · 18/02/2023 21:35

I might do if it were my mums mothers day cards, or birthday cards for close family.

plumduck · 18/02/2023 21:35

I tend to just go oooh that's a nice one who is that from.

Snowpixi · 18/02/2023 21:35

I’d admire the front of the card but I would not read the message. That’s never ever occurred to me to read it!

timoteigirl · 18/02/2023 21:35

Of course not.

Theraffarian · 18/02/2023 21:36

No , especially valentines cards , who knows what you might end up reading , just because the picture on the card is on display it doesn’t mean the message is a free for all

TobermorysMusicMachine · 18/02/2023 21:36

I might do it on the sly but I know it’s not acceptable! I wouldn’t want to be caught doing it!

PriamFarrl · 18/02/2023 21:36

It would depend who it was. My parents or my mother in law then perhaps. But then only Christmas cards or birthday cards, and only if they stood out for some reason really.

Valentines cards, no.

MuggleMe · 18/02/2023 21:36

Never again. Mindlessly read one on my parents mantelpiece and it was a note from a family friend criticising the relationship between me and my then fiancé. Why risk putting that on display??

Reader, we celebrated our 15 year anniversary last year.

I wouldn't read them unless I was super close and not valentine's.

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 18/02/2023 21:37

It wouldn't cross my mind to because I wouldn't actually care what's in them. If I'm visiting I'm present for the person and not their possessions. I'd also be abit taken aback if someone read mine.

UWhatNow · 18/02/2023 21:38

I thought that putting them on display was an invitation for people to read them!

Jdjdntbhh · 18/02/2023 21:39

No way how rude to read someone else’s messages!

wishing3 · 18/02/2023 21:40

This!

motleymop · 18/02/2023 21:40

I have done this in the past with birthday or Christmas cards. I felt like it was showing an interest and probably had run out of anything else to say. It never really occurred to me it was rude. I wouldn't do it with valentine's cards though. I'm not sure I would do it at all now.

Lkydfju · 18/02/2023 21:41

No that’s rude especially for valentines today although DH and I kept ours in our bedroom this year because I’m sure our teen and mil would be nosey enough to do it

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/02/2023 21:42

Yes of course, or why have them out?

redbigbananafeet · 18/02/2023 21:51

Something like birthday I might say 'can I look at your cards' but obviously not Valentine's Day ones!

redbigbananafeet · 18/02/2023 21:53

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/02/2023 21:42

Yes of course, or why have them out?

So that they, the receiver, can look at them and feel loved?

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 18/02/2023 21:54

God no 😑

helpfulperson · 18/02/2023 21:57

this is one of those things that I probably shouldn't but yes I would.
