Am I a snob?

minitegg · 18/02/2023 16:43

My friend lives around a hour away and invited me over hers to go to a pub.
She said it's a nice family pub
So over I go.
In my head I'm expecting a nice pub with a fire, nice food etc
Oh no she took me to the local working men's club.
Which didn't even look like a pub, more like a big shed.
Anyway we walk in and there's about 8 people in-all old men, football on the tv and inside it resembled a school disco hall.
Random tables with 80s seats
Then my friend says it gets busier lately.
So off we go sitting on a table whilst the football match is on-every 15 mins she goes out for a vape..and I'm just sat there watching my clock.
She gets really drunk and says "shall we go sit with them" (and points to some men about 80)
I ask why ?
And she says it might be fun
So off she goes screeching "hiyaaaaaaa yous alright -had a good night -brilliant in here isn't it"

At this point all I can think of is a takeaway and home
Worst night of my life -am I snob ?

Sounds like a shit night but it would have probably been a laugh if there was a group of you.

RampantIvy · 18/02/2023 18:36

We still have WMCs round here, or more usually Miners Welfare Clubs. Some are "sheds with bars" and some have had some money spent on them. I worked a beer festival at one of them in November. It was great fun.

@minitegg your evening out sounded awful.

StickofVeg · 18/02/2023 18:39

No, I don't think that makes you a snob at all. However, perhaps she's just had some really good times there and doesn't see what you see.

Is your friend Kerry Mucklowe?

I love her 😂

UsingChangeofName · 18/02/2023 18:45

Having a very different idea of a night out doesn't make you a snob, but I can't understand how you are close enough to this person to travel an hour to spend the evening with her, without knowing that you are so different.

In truth, it isn't the venue that would bother me so much as the fact she kept leaving you sat like a pudding on your own every 20mins.

I meant worst night out of my life
to be fair though, if that is the 'worst night out of your life' you have lived a pretty sheltered life.

surreygirl1987 · 18/02/2023 19:05

Sounds like my idea of hell 🙈

Lolreally · 18/02/2023 19:07

Many years ago a group of us went to a wmc (members only) we weren't members.
When they realised a bloke came over and asked 'are you members' no we reply 'then drink your drinks and fuck off' 😂😂😂😂

Pipsquiggle · 18/02/2023 19:10

It sounds like an awful night out. I grew up where there were loads of WMC.

They were all grim but cheap. At least Phoenix Nights looked like it had a bit of cameraderie.

Maybe you and your friend have grown apart

This was in a small village
I meant worst night out of my life
If I had known that's where we were going I would of said no

"Would HAVE said no"
If you think you're better than her, please use correct grammar.

I think you're just different 🤷‍♀️

ArianahX · 18/02/2023 20:15

I went to an ex colleague's engagement party at the local 'con club'... forget posh Tories, it was rough as shit, the atmosphere not helped by the No Drugs signs on the toilet doors, and the angry drunk relatives falling out.
But the drinks were cheap...

Bless. Do you feel all superior and clever now?

2Blackcat · 18/02/2023 20:38

I think if you were in a group of good friends & the drinks were cheap it might be a laugh. I wouldn't be happy if it was pre planned -,especially sitting on my own whilst she popped out.

No, I don’t think you’re a snob because you wrote “would of” instead of would have.

I noticed too - as you can see. Just came across the awful error early on. I definitely feel it should be pointed out. Incidentally a snob is likely to be snobbish about the ability to write in grammatical English.

No, I don’t think you’re a snob because you wrote “would of” instead of would have.

Can you spot the difference between the following:

'No, I don’t think you’re a snob because you wrote “would of” instead of would have.'

and

'No, I don’t think you’re a snob, because you wrote “would of” instead of would have.'

Embarrassing that you made a punctuation error when correcting someone else.

AlmostSummer21 · 18/02/2023 21:20

No, I don't think you're a snob. I don't think you have the credentials.

You are not her friend either.

GoodChat · 18/02/2023 21:25

Ironic, @StrychnineInTheSandwiches

I wouldn’t actually parenthesise at all in that first sentence.

Nice try!

confettipig · 18/02/2023 21:43

You ought to have gone home!

It sounds horrific. I would have left.

Horrific, how privalaged are you . Lol. Horrific 🤣🤣🤣

Reinventinganna · 18/02/2023 21:48

Surely it’s just different tastes. It’s not snobbery to enjoy a different type of bar.

Agree, some of these comments, it’s hideous darling, horrific I say. Lol. Cringing myself inside out.

op, darling, how utterly hideous, it sounds horrific. Poor you. Chin chin, don’t go back darling.

ItchyBillco · 18/02/2023 21:50

People falling all over themselves to poke holes in the OP’s use of punctuation and grammar, in an attempt to say, ‘how dare you endeavour to ascend to the level of snob, you mere illiterate peasant,’ is the most depressingly Mumsnet thing to happen on this thread.

I mean, one poster just came out and said she didn’t have the ‘credentials’ to be a snob.

Christ.

Pipps80 · 18/02/2023 21:51

Sounds like HELL to me 🤮
