The secret things you do that no-one else knows....

Every day that DP is out of the house at work, I buy an early-afternoon energy drink. They are rancid, sugary, unhealthy and downright common as muck but I absolutely love the buzz I get for the rest of the day. DP would be appalled with me if he found out 😅

My MN habit is a secret too. I don't have children, and I'm meant to have a professional, busy job which doesn't allow time for fucking about online. But here I am. I'm friends with a lot of women with young children who regularly talk about things being discussed on MN. I feign surprise or interest but I'm really thinking "Yeah, I saw that".

When I'm stressed and home alone, I talk to myself. I talk myself through what's getting me down, why, and what I need to do. I also reassure myself saying things like "Pull yourself together, it's fine, make a list and let's start at the top". I have no shame about this, I think its a perfectly normal thing to do. Except that I talk to myself in random accents. Today I went inexplicably scouse. My temporary foreign accent syndrome is the reason I keep this particularly activity a secret.

Tell me your secrets....

BTW, long-timer but NC just in case!

Matched betting - make a nice amount of money from it, but couldn't explain it to friends as they wouldn't understand.

I raise you Nightwish, Sabaton and Within Temptation and I'm 65

Not a fan of Iron Maiden and AC/DC

Love a bit of Pink Floyd but then who doesn't

I give myself a good talking to, walking myself through whatever problem I'm facing and often in the style of the voice over for a documentary. It's quite cathartic and helps me process my feelings out loud.

I'll talk to my dead ex, who wasn't the best father to our kids but now he's gone I seem able to say things to him. I'll even thank him for intervening with situations our kids are in where it seems as though some unseen force has influenced the outcome. I saw him sitting in our daughter's room a night or two after he died and although I don't feel he's still around (I definitely felt he was at first) I still get the odd time where I think he's watching. I've realised that I'm fumbling around in the middle of a very complicated sort of grief, before now I'd just assumed our children were dealing with the grief and I was OK, but over the last few weeks I've come to understand that the way I'm feeling (floundering and not in control of my life) is probably down to grief.
I'm in a loving and supportive relationship but this dialogue with my ex is allowing me to process and let go of the frankly appalling treatment my ex dished out when he was alive.

I write fanfic - I've written entire novels of the stuff and have an ongoing massive project. When people ask me what I got up to last night/ in my time off it's really awkward because I can't account for the time.

I've remembered something else I do which is weird - I like to plan out my Buffy The Vampire Slayer podcast which i will one day make with my DH (DH is currently as fictional as the podcast - but he is a big Buffy fan). Sometimes I record myself chatting about snippets of the episode on my phone (and then delete them right away).

The whole premise is looking at the original UK air dates and then looking up what was happening in the news and what was number one in the charts on the day it aired so it can be placed in context of what was going on in people's lives when they first sat down and watched it. There's also a section called "the shipping forecast" where we play the shipping forecast theme and then talk about pairings. I've done quite a lot of research for a podcast I will never make.

I sometimes pull all of my prettiest dresses that I never get to wear out of my wardrobe and try them on just because.

Louisetopaz21 · 16/02/2023 16:30

I love hiding and jumping out at my DH making him jump out of his skin, I get him everytime.

I love skidding on the laminate flooring pretending I am ice skating.

When me and DH are out we make up pretend background stories for people when we are people watching and will translate their conversations in different voices.

My now almost adult daughter has had two key soft toys all her life, a cat and a rabbit. They are married and have a very tempestuous life. We regularly discuss their exploits as if they are wholly factual. The cat wife has ninja spy training, a propensity for violent crime and is insanely competitive. The rabbit husband is largely amiable with an indefensible appetite for stinky cigars. They have a blue blue elephant as a child. He is adopted, but the cat wife regularly regales us with stories of her heroic labour. Both of them are frankly terrible parents and routinely lose their child. Last year was the first time they didn't come on holiday with us, which made me quite sad, but they still come out for key domestic events like Christmas. This Christmas they got into a big fist fight over the crackers, it was carnage.

Sometimes do this just to watch telly. All dressed up. I did manage to persuade OH to take me to a tea dance recently and we both enjoyed it so perhaps the nice clothes will start getting more outings.

FamousNotFamous · 16/02/2023 16:41

I went through a phase a few years ago when I’d joined a Married dating site and I’d chat with men on there. I never met any of them but I have to confess I enjoyed talking and flirting with them. My marriage went through a rough patch about two years ago, I rejoined and did the same thing.

I realise it’s not great but it’s my Go To when I’m feeling particularly stressed and gave me what I needed at that time.

MortimerTheCat · 16/02/2023 16:43

When i am cooking I narrate what I am doing like I am a tv chef

whattodo1975 · 16/02/2023 16:48

A lot of people seem a bit afraid of their husbands on here, which isnt great.

MargaritaRita · 16/02/2023 16:51

When I am on my own I translate everything that's in my head into French. OUT LOUD! I loved that language at school and try to pretend I am in the cast of Emily in Paris or someone on a beautiful farm with lavendar and fruit and vines in the South of France. I am 65 FGS!

I have had some funny looks when I forget I am in French mode and someone comes to the door. Batty old Madame.

CharlieSays13 · 16/02/2023 16:52

Your mum might also like watching really bad plaque being removed from very dodgy looking teeth 🙈

A lot of people seem a bit afraid of their husbands on here, which isnt great.

Just because I get up at 3.30am to cut my own hair and eat secret scotch eggs does NOT mean I am afraid of my husband.

I am simply afraid of the children we have raised together. They will not leave me alone. They are quite literally obsessed with me. I actually think the 7mo is a bit of a stalker.

Firstruleofsoupover · 16/02/2023 16:53

@weaseleyesThat is enchanting about the personalities of the toys. We have here two cuddly bears, one quite touchy and sometimes very aggressive with a hatred of crosswords and a very deep voice, the little other one slowly revealing his personality as we only acquired him recently but quite easily led into trouble by his bigger pillowmate. They are devoted to each other which doesn't stop them acting up if they think the other one has been given a treat (eg photo taken, special cuddles).

Sometimes if I can't sleep and am troubled I work through my alter ego life where I am about 15, come from a rich family with two younger brothers and go to a boarding school. I am good at sports particularly tennis, and have extra coaching because of my obvious talent. I have a cupboard full of lovely clothes. There are always people looking out for my well-being and I am completely secure. Although good-looking with proper thick hair, it strikes me as I write that I am also a bit dull and don't really have a sense of humour.

I love all the folk that go upstairs on all fours. Might try it!

Newbuildhulahoops · 16/02/2023 16:55

I dance and sing to gospel choir music

I'm in the most non religious person ever but I'm just channelling my inner Sister Act every time I'm home alone.... 😂

Then, I do the same with System of a Down

Beetr00t · 16/02/2023 16:56

I sing my absolute HEAD off (deafeningly loud) in the car, while imagining I'm a tiktok star and of course various exes see the videos and realise the song is about them.

I have a lunchtime 45 minute nap every day. I function so much better once I've had a little sleep.

I also take a day off every couple of months and just sleep.

Not lazy, just long covid.

Same, long covid too. It's the only way I can function now

RubiesandRose · 16/02/2023 12:59

I do the voice for my dog and speak as if it's him.

He's a french bulldog so has a slight french accent and also swears a lot.

For example I'll ask him to go out and a do a wee and then answer myself in his faux french accent with a "are you fucking mad, it's fucking freezing out there, I'm a dog not a fucking snow leopard!"

I do it in front of my husband and grown up kids but nobody else.

My old dog was a big Rhodesian Ridgeback and he had a Scooby Doo voice!

Hehe, snap, the dog and cats all have voices and regular conversations with me!

Op you sound really quite odd....
I think I like u 😆

Sandra1984 · 16/02/2023 17:06

I binge on crime documentaries on YouTube, just listening that a "female torso was found washed by the river shore on 1998..." has all my 100% undivided attention and removes my stresses.

Kissedbyfire1 · 16/02/2023 11:54

I have cock rock music at full volume in my car. I’m 60 🤣

I have current club music / Ibiza tunes on full volume in my car - I’m 56.

IHeartGeneHunt · 16/02/2023 17:08

I have no religion but I have pictures of Catholic saints in my purse and talk to them in my head sometimes. (Padre Pio and Saint Bernadette.)
I have two novels mostly written in my head and add bits on when I'm doing anything boring.

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 16/02/2023 17:10

Inexplicably Scouse 😂🤣
Sorry that just really tickled me 😁

Nothing much - masturbating, online bingo and eating condensed milk straight out of the tin 😎
