If you smoke

Then how do you afford it

No judgement at all. I'm inspired to ask by another thread where someone said it costs £12 a pack. I had no idea. I thought maybe £7/8 a pack.

I'm guessing so many are vaping now due to cost.

Exactly, and hence the high tax. Although the conspiracy theorist may also say its to a government's benefit to have people addicted to drink and cigarettes too! Would be interesting to see the numbers that's for sure

Back in 2010 government revenue from tobacco sales was over £10b, and smokers were costing the NHS £1.7b, leaving a net gain to the NHS from smokers of over £8b.

I can't find current figures but my guess is that due to exorbitant tobacco tax increases since then that the net gain is currently much larger, despite the fact that smoking prevalence has fallen from roughly 20% to 14% in that time (reducing the cost to the NHS as well). Taxes and duty have risen almost 300% since 2013 according to one study, which would more than make up for the 33% decrease in smokers.

Overall, the government is making a lot of money from smokers.

PaperDoves · 16/02/2023 06:26

If I see anyone under 50 smoking now, I surmise that they are not very bright, and are intellectually challenged.

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps the power of addiction has nothing to do with intelligence. Also, smoking habits have changed since it's no longer acceptable to smoke in public. You may not see your neighbours smoking because they only do so in the privacy of their back gardens.

blebbleb · 16/02/2023 07:06

Lunch cancer is one of the most common candies still. Over 70% caused by smoking. It's also really hard to cure. Hopefully these statistics go down now it's less socially acceptable to smoke.

blebbleb · 16/02/2023 07:06

Lung cancer! Sorry half asleep.

absolutelyincandescentwithrage · 16/02/2023 08:01

I found it hard to afford it, but it was an addiction, so I found the money somehow. I gave up four years ago and I'm so glad I did.
Not long before I gave up I was in London and desperate for a cig having run out, and this little kiosk was charging £16.50 for my preferred brand. That really made me wince. But it was health concerns that finally made me give up. I did it cold turkey and using Allen Carr's method after several attempts using patches which failed.

mamabear715 · 16/02/2023 12:45

That's right, previous poster, I smoke in the garden, never in the house.
What I have noticed lately, I don't know if other smokers have, is that a superking cigarette now goes down as quickly as an old regular length cigarette used to.. ?

Dianehb · 16/02/2023 13:11

What type of Superkings do you smoke? I smoke Carlton Superkings and they seem to last a quite long time.

Same way people afford holidays, alcohol, going to a football match, going to a restaurant, eating meat, buying expensive clothes, having a hobby- people with prioritise their spending. I’m not sure what’s so difficult to grasp?!

This. I find it a really odd question. People who smoke probably cut back on other things non smokers don't. Did the op really mean why do you smoke ?

When I was a teenager (early 1980s,) and I first started working in factories, I would say about 80% of the women that worked on my shift (of 60 women) smoked. As did 65% of my extended family members (about 25 people.) I would go to the pub two or three times a week in the 1980s and early 1990s, and about 70 to 80% of people smoked. Including me. Although I did give it up. I started at 17 and give up in my mid 20s. Some 30+ years ago.

My daughter is now in her late 20s and she has, and I'm not kidding you, about 22-23 friends ... from college, University, school, work, etc... Not one. I mean NOT ONE single one of those friends smoke. Neither does she or her fiancé. Her fiancé has approximately 15 extended family members. Only one of them smokes, and that's his nan, who's 79. In MY extended family I have now, now around 20 people, (on mine and DH's side,) NONE smoke. Not one.

In my street we have 21 properties. approximately 45-50 people in those 21 properties. I don't think more than three or four of them smoke again, they are 55 plus.

I think it's becoming increasingly unfashionable to smoke, as well as being extortionately expensive. I think it makes people look quite unclassy to be honest... It looked classy some 50+ years ago, but now, it makes people look quite unclassy. If I see anyone under 50 smoking now, I surmise that they are not very bright, and are intellectually challenged.

How smug and sanctimonious I'm under 50, I smoke and I am not "intellectually challenged"

I do have ADHD though and there is a correlation between ADHD and smoking because having a cigarette produces dopamine, which is something I lack. It's also doubly hard for people with ADHD to give up. Addiction and ADHD go hand in hand.

Maybe don't be so smug and sanctimonious.

Dianehb · 16/02/2023 14:52

For the Smokers on this thread, what is the average amount of cigarettes that you smoke a day. I smoke 20 a day (probably above average) that costs me £70 a week. Do you smoke more or less than this amount? I think the average is about 14 a day.

I average less than 1 a day, if I go out I might have 2-3 in one day.

I give myself 10 cigarettes a day but I usually nick another 2, sometimes 3, out of the pack. So I aim for 10 but it's usually 12.

A pack is £10.90 now so it costs me £6.54 per day to smoke -- so £45.78 per week, or £2,380.56 per year.

Still cheaper than horses. Grin

TeenLifeMum · 16/02/2023 16:03

Do and I commented recently when walking the dog that we’re smelling weed a lot more and in nicer areas of our town - previously there’s been key areas where is was common but feels far more present. I wonder if it’s now cheaper than tobacco? I’ve no idea. It concerns me as it’s so clearly linked to mh issues. I don’t like smoking in any sense though so have fairly low tolerance. Seeing my grandfather unable to breathe as he was dying of lung cancer sealed that one.

TeenLifeMum · 16/02/2023 16:03

Dh not do 🙄

Hiddenmnetter · 16/02/2023 16:05

I go through around 1-2 packs/week, so roughly 6/day? But I’m smoking more cause of the cheap cigarettes I got on holiday. Normally I smoke rollies and smoke 4/5 per day.

bobbytorq · 16/02/2023 16:17

I can't believe people still smoke. When I was medical school, the cadaver I got to dissect was a smoker and the lungs were just nasty. Put me off right there and then.

Dianehb · 15/02/2023 14:10

My husband and I are regular 20 a day smokers and we smoke cigs that cost just over £10 a pack, so weekly expenditure is £150 for us. My teenage daughter has recently started smoking and we have to buy her cigs too, so another £50 a week. I know it is expensive, but all enjoy our cigs and I usually buy 4 x 100 packs a week in total.

Are you for real? Of course you don’t ‘have to’ buy your teenage daughter’s cigarettes! 😳

I buy rolling tobacco however am really trying to lower my intake.

Currently costing around £38 a week and even though I can afford it I hate it.

My parents don't smoke.
Mum never and dad gave up 25 years ago however he was asking me about how much it costs now and I was telling him and he was aghast and shocked as partner also spends the same amount as me.

It reminded me I regularly convince myself I don't drink or go out so it's all
I do however that's really not the best mindset to have.

I've just downloaded a couple of apps and hypnosis app so am getting started on it

Get a copy of Allen Carr stop smoking.

mamabear715 · 16/02/2023 19:30

I smoke 10 a day, used to be 20 but now I'm fine with 10.
@Dianehb I smoke Richmond Superkings - maybe I'm just inhaling too deeply, then! ;-)

Dianehb · 16/02/2023 20:15

My Husband sometimes smokes Richmond Superkings and I have found them similar to my usual smoke of Carlton Superkings and at a a similar price. when I started smoking 30 years ago, I bought King size, but now we only smoke superkings.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 16/02/2023 21:12

@Nat6999

I would be interested in which vape and tank and liquids you purchase and where from.

There are many dodgy liquids about so it's hard to know the better options.

If you could either reply here or pm that would be really helpful.

Thank you

I grew up with a dad that smoked in every room in the house in the 80s.
Nowhere was away from it. And in the car

It was normal to me then and then I started smoking but it bloody hate it.

It's my biggest regret that I ever started but I've gotta just sort my shit out.

When I have days where I limit myself I feel so less stressed because I'm not thinking about my next fag and I feel like it's a massive step but then il creep back again and it's awful

It's a real cycle and battle.

Fuwari · 16/02/2023 21:52

I regularly travel abroad and bring enough back with me to last until the next trip. Price is between £3 and £4 a pack depending where I get them. Yes I know there’s a limit now on what you’re allowed to bring in but that would only be a factor if I got stopped at customs. Even then they’d just be confiscated and I’ve made enough of a saving over the years that I’d still be £1000’s better off overall. Obviously covid stopped me for a while but I earn enough to pay the prices here. I just then have less money for other things.

I understand why heavily addicted smokers carry on smoking and make all sorts of other economies to prioritise their addiction.

I don't understand why occasional smokers or those who don't smoke every day keep buying them. Why don't you just quit? You're not even that addicted!

Because part of it is the naughty factor. I like that it’s a bit grim. I also love drinking and eating and still occasionally suck my thumb so very orally fixated.

I really enjoy smoking even though it was only 2 or 3 rollies a day at work. I’ve “given up” since last year because I can’t really afford it and would rather have wine but will smoke on holiday when it’s only five euros for rollies or if I’’m offered one which very rarely happens. I had three cigarettes about 4 weeks ago and before that was some in August. So you’re right, I’m not addicted but it’s something I will probably always like doing.

Dianehb · 16/02/2023 22:17

Before Brexit, we used to Travel to Belgium quite a lot to buy our cigarettes there. We used to bring 8 cartons back with a saving of around £50 a carton. These used to last us about 6 weeks. We cannot do this any more though.

Has anyone tried IQOS (smokeless cigarette) as an alternative to cigarettes? Does this product satisfy you as much as cigarettes?
