If you smoke

Then how do you afford it

No judgement at all. I'm inspired to ask by another thread where someone said it costs £12 a pack. I had no idea. I thought maybe £7/8 a pack.

I'm guessing so many are vaping now due to cost.

Do people really believe dianehb?! Surely not!

ItWillWash · 15/02/2023 19:54

In my area there's always someone who knows someone who has cheap fags. Hardly anyone pays full price.

I can get 200 for £55 or 400 for £70 atm.

sadly it’s probably true

AWafferthinmint · 15/02/2023 20:05

@Dianehb how do you afford it? Have you had to cut back on other things?

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 15/02/2023 20:06

I buy rolling tobacco however am really trying to lower my intake.

Currently costing around £38 a week and even though I can afford it I hate it.

My parents don't smoke.
Mum never and dad gave up 25 years ago however he was asking me about how much it costs now and I was telling him and he was aghast and shocked as partner also spends the same amount as me.

It reminded me I regularly convince myself I don't drink or go out so it's all
I do however that's really not the best mindset to have.

I've just downloaded a couple of apps and hypnosis app so am getting started on it

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 15/02/2023 20:09

£12????

Jeezo. I have never smoked but before they shut all the fags away behind doors in the supermarket you'd see the prices when buying stamps or paying for shopping in the Co-Op.

This is probably why there is a "Dodgy Dave" selling knock-off fags or imported Polish fags regularly on our local Facebook page.

NortieTortie · 15/02/2023 20:38

Some of you are v sheltered. At least Dianehb 's DD is 18. When I was at school, a girl's mom used to buy her fags from 14. Apparently her mom thought she'd be a hypocrite for punishing or not providing cigarettes, since she also smoked 🤨

I quit with an e cig if it helps
From 30 a day (for over 20 years) to none

Price elasticity on cigarettes and alcohol is extremely low. That’s why governments love smokers and drinkers. They load them up with tax and then rake in billions all the while virtuously proclaiming that they’re trying to reduce smoking. NHS would be buggered if smokers all quit.

on a pack of 20, the tax is £5.26+16.5% of the retail price (around £12-£13). That’s around £8 in tax, or 70%-ish.

there were approx 1.2bn packets sold in 2021.

so that’s £8-£9bn in cigarette duties alone. We’re a gvt cash cow.

Hiddenmnetter · 15/02/2023 21:44

Biggest source of smoking decreases in the UK have come from vaping not price hikes.

SoozyWoozy5 · 15/02/2023 21:44

Completely agree!

Hiddenmnetter · 15/02/2023 21:47

Alcohol duties raised around £12bn. If you smoke and drink you’re paying the gvt hand over fist. £20bn, or around 2% of all gvt revenue is coming from vice duties. All the while gvt knows that the cost of cigarettes and alcohol doesn’t effectively drive down consumption.

Hiddenmnetter · 15/02/2023 21:48

Or to give you another idea- 20bn out of 180bn from the NHS budget- 10%+ of the entire NHS is funded by smokers and drinkers. After covid the whole country should be clapping for us 😳

MrsMikeDrop · 15/02/2023 21:49

Well it's an addiction, one of the hardest to quit, so you make it work!

Dianehb · 15/02/2023 14:10

My husband and I are regular 20 a day smokers and we smoke cigs that cost just over £10 a pack, so weekly expenditure is £150 for us. My teenage daughter has recently started smoking and we have to buy her cigs too, so another £50 a week. I know it is expensive, but all enjoy our cigs and I usually buy 4 x 100 packs a week in total.

This is sad, and I understand why people are disturbed. But the reality is that most parents who smoke also end up with kids who smoke imo. It's not something I think a parent should actively be facilitating though.

golddustwomen · 15/02/2023 22:10

£20 a week on a packet of tobacco, rizzla and filters.

evilharpy · 15/02/2023 22:22

I don't smoke but have quite a few friends who do - I don't know a single person who buys cigarettes. Nobody can afford to. They all smoke rollies.

underneaththeash · 15/02/2023 23:01

In took DD into Wycombe on Monday, I can’t believe how many people are smoking just outside the centre, many with buggies. Utterly vile and wasteful,

i live about 8 mil s away, i can’t remember Seeing anyone smoking for a few years during the day.

I really hope you are trolling! Why do you have to buy her cigarettes? I would never agree to that!

thinykinny87 · 15/02/2023 12:48

No it absolutely isn't. I was just shocked at the price I had no idea.

Roflmao.

I remember when 20 L&B hit £2.50 a pack, and people would come rant about how it was outrageous and then just buy 10 at £1.50, and I was like, can you not even do maths!? They’d be back the following night for the same.

£12. Wow! Some people really have a lot of money to waste. Doesn’t matter how much money you have, with a habit like that you’re gonna be poor.

This probably should not have made me laugh, as it is completely inappropriate, and will wind people up no end. I actually think the OP @thinykinny87 was not trying to be judgemental, but it has triggered others, who were then further wound up by @Dianehb comments. In reality, and to answer the original question properly, some smokers buy them from abroad, for anything between £3-6 a pack depending where you get them, some do rollies as they are cheaper (as many have said on this thread), some have a dodgy place you can buy them too. Some people vape because it can be cheaper. Whether people should be smoking at all, or vaping, or drinking, or taking drugs, or becoming obese from takeaways when they have other options to spend their money wisely. I'd probably add, when they have other calls on their money which would be better spent on themselves and their immediate family, but this is actually down to them.

Duty free cigs if anyone I'm remotely connected to is going abroad, although you can't bring many back now, 200 I think, when I'm on holiday I risk it and bring more than the allowance.
Also there are people on our estate who sell cigs and a local shop sells duty frees from under the counter.
Yep I'm breaking the law, I'm an addict, what can I say

Nat6999 · 15/02/2023 23:23

I vape & it costs me £10 a week, if I smoked it would be at least 40 a day so around £188 a week, there is no way I could afford that. My £10 is just for juice as a coil can last me around a month as I only vape low wattage.

Same way people afford holidays, alcohol, going to a football match, going to a restaurant, eating meat, buying expensive clothes, having a hobby- people with prioritise their spending. I’m not sure what’s so difficult to grasp?!
