If you smoke

Then how do you afford it

No judgement at all. I'm inspired to ask by another thread where someone said it costs £12 a pack. I had no idea. I thought maybe £7/8 a pack.

I'm guessing so many are vaping now due to cost.

My husband and I are regular 20 a day smokers and we smoke cigs that cost just over £10 a pack, so weekly expenditure is £150 for us. My teenage daughter has recently started smoking and we have to buy her cigs too, so another £50 a week. I know it is expensive, but all enjoy our cigs and I usually buy 4 x 100 packs a week in total.

Flipping Nora, that’s awful.

I don't believe this is genuine. You don't seriously buy your daughter cigarettes

Onehappymam · 15/02/2023 18:05

My MIL is a heavy smoker - 30 a day. She prioritises cigarettes above all else. She doesn’t have her heating on and barely eats. She’s also reluctant to leave the house as she knows she won’t have the same freedom to smoke elsewhere. It’s sad to think of all the things she’s missed out on. She’s a much loved granny, but will choose chain smoking at home over spending time with them every time. It truly is an addiction.

You know you don’t have to buy them for your daughter? Hmm

Did you have a tread recently about smoking on holiday. If so that's the thread that made me ask about the price

I don’t smoke but my husband and quite a few of our friends do (agricultural background, I think smoking is probably slightly more prevalent than the ‘average’?) and they all smoke rollies. One of my husbands friends drives lorries internationally and brings tobacco back so that’s a bit cheaper I think. I don’t actually know how much DH spends on smoking but he spends very little on anything else as contracting leaves little time for a social life so the money aspect doesn’t bother me.
the health aspect is another story… 😥

Yup. Apparently they base their holiday destinations on where is best for indoor smoking 🤢

maddiemookins16mum · 15/02/2023 18:24

Less new clothes, not getting things like nails or brows done, not buying coffee on the way to work or a sandwich from the shop. I smoke 5 a day, costs me £3 ish. People spend that on other shit.

Herja · 15/02/2023 18:26

In all honesty, I buy dodgy tobacco. Every corner shop within a mile sells it, so I reckon most smokers in the area do. Indeed, without specially going to a supermarket, it's easier to buy dodgy duty free. Rolling my own and the shop's offerings keep it to about £7 a week, despite being a fairly heavy smoker.

I know, dodgy morals regarding the tax avoidance, but I just don't care enough to be honest. I can't afford an old age, so I'm sure I'll save some for the government via a fear of doctors and a young death anyway 😁.

Onehappymam · 15/02/2023 18:36

Really @Herja? I’m obviously a bit naive. Didn’t cross my mind you can buy black market goods from an actual shop. How does that work? Do they only sell to folk they know or to just anyone who asks? How do you know what to ask for?

Sorry for all the nosey questions! I’m just intrigued.

user1494050295 · 15/02/2023 18:41

Ex social smoker here. I gave up when I came back from the US $3 a pack at the time and £4 a pack here. 2000. I read it was about 90p in the £ tax. Easy decision as I didn’t want the govt to get even more of my money

QueefQueen80s · 15/02/2023 18:51

I was just thinking earlier that I'm just keeping my head above water with bills and food. And realising that I just wouldn't be able to afford a bad habit even if I wanted one.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 15/02/2023 19:01

I vape more now. I buy maybe 40 cigarettes a week

Why the heck you’re buying her cigarettes for? if she wants to smoke she cannot buy it herself?
I smoke almost 20 a day and so is my DH , we can easily afford the expense, we don’t drink alcohol at all and we don’t really eat a lot, my last full shop was at Christmas ( to give you an idea)

JustAnotherManicNameChange · 15/02/2023 19:05

I don't do a lot of the things that also cost a significant amount of money like coffees, lunches, nails, makeup, hair, tan, expensive bags or shoes, you get the idea. I don't drink alcohol either. Probably sounds miserable to some , but I have no interest in any of that. So the money not spent on that goes on fags.(and other things I do enjoy)

Gingerkittykat · 15/02/2023 19:09

When I was a teenager in the early 90s my 15 year old friend's mum used to give her a daily allowance to buy 10 fags and let her smoke in the house. Even then I had no respect for her, my mum smoked and I had to sneak about if I wanted to smoke.

Dianehb · 15/02/2023 19:09

My daughter is 18 and at college, so I am still supporting her. I buy her cigarettes as well.

me too, £5 a pack here for lamberts/richmond and £7 really shitty amberleaf or £12/3 for turner

I’m just amazed that you would enable her with something so revolting and deadly. You know how awful an addiction it is and that it will probably kill you - why on earth would you encourage her? And I say this as someone who smoked for around 20 years (gave up 5 years ago).

This is one of the strangest things I’ve read. You’re spending £600 a month on something which will kill you, and have now also started paying for something which will kill your daughter? And encouraging your teenager to smoke, by buying her cigarettes??

Lol she’s winding you up (well all of us!)

Must admit l clutched my pearls at this too!! Shocking you would encourage your daughter but then not exactly great role models so shouldn't be surprised.
