Knife crime in general is horrific in this country, especially with teenagers. We need a strategy to try to stop it.

Yesterday my son was in MacDonald's and a teenage boy was stabbed by another teenager. He saw the victim bleeding all over the place while they waited for police and ambulance because the staff locked the doors. Teen knife crime is endemic. Nobody knows why Brianna was stabbed. Speculation is unhelpful.

I hope your son is doing ok Flowers

Part of the reason I’m glad I don’t have a son. When everyone thought she was a female people cared when everyone found out she was male everyone stopped caring.

I've absolutely not seen this at all.

Thank you - he's not very ok and I'm worried - he says he knows who did it, there was another stabbing down here recently and I know that witnesses have been intimidated and had to leave the area. I've told him to keep quiet and not tell anyone even friends who weren't there but you know what teenagers are like.

I don't trust the lying, corrupt, rapist and paedophile protecting police force to do any decent work on this. Letting them do their job? Haha. What job is that? It's very far from what they should have been doing, just ask Sarah Everard's family.

And my gods the screaming from a certain contingent that this isn't their fault, is so very telling.

It's ludicrous to assume the police will do nothing when we know that they rightly take knife crime very seriously.

AWaferThinMint · 14/02/2023 09:32

@Blessedwithsunshine I'm pleased it's still happening. I haven't seen any of it in my kid's school. I hadn't realised there was increased funding either, I've learned something today.

In that case you're absolutely correct that this is about the how. How do we reach these kids, what isn't working now, how do we shift the culture.

Thanks for responding 👍

mids2019 · 14/02/2023 09:37

Firstly this was a heinous senseless loss of life of a child and the family obviously are devestated.

However there may be reasons for not labouring this as a hate crime as the motivation for the attack has not been established. By instantly labelling this as a hate crime you have the danger of the death of a poor child becoming politicised and that may actually add to the agony of the family. There has been no indication anyone else in the LGBQT+ community is being targeted and so we can't look at this as an upswell of hatred generally against minority groups.

One thing that in my opinion would be wrong is that someone makes an incorrect link between this murder and GC views.

mids2019 · 14/02/2023 09:38

labelling

MeinKraft · 14/02/2023 10:23

'I am surprised the police have so quickly jumped up the conclusion that it is not a hate crime. Given the victim was transgender. I am amazed.'

I am too - the only explanation I can think of was that the perpetrators were also transgender. No matter who did it, or why, it's such a shocking and sad waste of life.

I've absolutely not seen this at all.

No neither have I, but I'm not on twitter or tik tok so may have missed this (thank goodness)

Absolutely tragic, my condolences to her parents...its just heart rending

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 14/02/2023 11:05

Maireed apologies that was actually a daft thing to ask you. Of course he's not. What an awful thing for him to witness. It must be very frightening for you all.

Comefromaway · 14/02/2023 11:10

This is absolutely tragic. I love in a bordering county and in the last few months alone there have been several knife attacks by and on young people. A notable one being over Christmas in our local shopping centre a 14 year old boy stabbed a similar aged child and was charged with attempted murder.

It may, or may not be a hate crime, I don't know. But it is very frightening.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/02/2023 11:36

I'd love to believe that this isn't a hate crime. But after the last few years with various police forces missing the point, failing to address the epidemic of violence against women, in fact being a huge part of the problem I just don't trust their assessment.
The Epsom College case being described as an isolated incident when 3 women a week are killed. The theory that Nicola Bulley has gone in the river with no evidence to indicate that, nor enough evidence to rule out any other theory.

Why is there so much violence amongst young people? Why hasn't this been addressed (elsewhere than Glasgow)?

The lack of trust in the police is what is causing all the speculation.

lifeturnsonadime · 14/02/2023 11:42

The lack of trust in the police is what is causing all the speculation.

This isn't true, not from what I've seen on twitter.

The speculation is due to it being in the interests of people with an agenda to use this child's murder as a political weapon.

It's vile. Whether it turns out to have been a hate crime or not a child's murder should not be used in this way.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/02/2023 14:20

Ok you articulated it better than me, but I stand by my position. If we trusted the police then their assurances that it isn't a hate crime would put the issue to bed.

WittyUsername123 · 14/02/2023 20:38

FYI this poor girl’s murder is now being investigated as a hate crime. Hate crimes are inherently political, as they are against protected classes of people, which is a political concept. If this murder makes anyone feel uncomfortable about their political stance then maybe take a moment to sit with that feeling, rather than rushing to the defensive. It could do you some good.

WinterFoxes · 14/02/2023 21:49

That poor poor child, bullied at school and then killed. It is unbearable.

It's not just that we need far stricter measures about knives, we really need to tackle bullying. It is out of hand and too many schools and parents don't take it seriously enough, not to mention the social media providers who allow it to flow 24/7.

Nonsense disagreeing with something doesn’t mean I would want them dead

Nonsense disagreeing with something doesn’t mean I would want them dead

You’ve got me completely perplexed with this response I’m afraid. Disagree with what? And who said anything about you wanting someone dead?
Hate crime is political- therefore it’s a bad faith argument to say that the discussion shouldn’t involve politics. If that makes you feel so defensive you see accusations that you want people dead all about the place, then maybe you should reflect on that feeling.

Mental backflips. You were talking about people feeling guilty about this because of their politics. Being gender critical does not mean anyone condones anything that would put these people to harm being committed against them. Does being pro-Trans mean people should feel guilty every time a crime is committed by a man in a dress against a woman? No? Don’t be ridiculous.

WittyUsername123 · 14/02/2023 23:20

Gosh, it didn’t take much to get the ‘man in a dress’ out of you! Your anger against minority groups must be very close to the surface of your mind at all times.

WhiteFire · 14/02/2023 23:45

I thought this post was more about trying to stem the tide of knife crime, the reasons, who it is, why etc are largely irrelevant, the result is the same, another child killed. Why are so many children carrying knives? Why does bullying or a disagreement end up with a child pulling a knife on another?

My 15 year old ds is.to have a knife crime talk at school, I am not sure it is because of the events at the weekend, but timely either way.

WhiteFire · 14/02/2023 23:50

A child is dead, and too many are using this to try and point score. It is absolutely disgraceful.

It’s too early to jump to conclusions.

It's not jumping to conclusions to comment on the police's acceptance that this is likely to be a hate crime.
