This is a really interesting look at the multifaceted approach that brought knife crime rates down in Glasgow

This is the third thread that I have seen about this incident in the last 24 hours but I guess the others have been removed.

It is very sad that another teenager has been stabbed but I think it was wrong of the media to initially say teenage girl, without mentioning the trans part. We now have no way of knowing the sex of the two 15 year old suspects, just because the media are saying boy and girl, doesn't mean it's true.

The reports I have seen describe the victim as a trans girl. So the fact that the people arrested are simply described in the same reports as a boy and a girl without any qualifier suggests you can take those reports as accurate.

lifeturnsonadime · 13/02/2023 17:46

Knife crime is an appalling problem.

In our area a young man was murdered outside a nightclub and teen was robbed at knife point walking home from school.

In last 48 hours it has been reported that 2 16 year olds have been murdered by other teenagers.

It is tragic that children are killing each other.

The police have asked for people not to speculate as to the reasons, presumably because it will jeopardise the criminal proceedings but they have been quick to say that they do not believe that this was a hate crime.

In spite of this people are speculating and using it to score political points including politicians. Which is disgraceful and disrespectful.

discobrain · 13/02/2023 18:04

I don't trust the lying, corrupt, rapist and paedophile protecting police force to do any decent work on this. Letting them do their job? Haha. What job is that? It's very far from what they should have been doing, just ask Sarah Everard's family.

And my gods the screaming from a certain contingent that this isn't their fault, is so very telling.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 13/02/2023 18:20

Knife crime statistics are really frightening. My kids are 10 and 7, I really worry for them growing up. I don’t know what the solution is, but something drastic needs to be done. What’s happened to Brianna is just horrific.

You do sound slightly unhinged.

As for a suggestion that women wanting to retain rights for vulnerable women are directly responsible for this child's death, that's pretty abhorrent really. It's not women looking out for other women who are the side inciting death threats.

The heat needs to be taken out of this.

A child has died, you have no idea what the motive was, nor does anyone else. Have some respect.

A child's death is not a political football, to score points.

The only foci should be support for the family, reducing the incidence going forward, and dealing with the perpetrators.

If you think teenage knife crime is caused by GC feminists, and will be prevented by attacking them, you're delusional.

Thank you for sharing this, it gives me some hope that knife crime can be tackled. As a mum of teens, it is every parent’s worst nightmare. I really feel for her family.

Sophds · 14/02/2023 05:39

Part of the reason I’m glad I don’t have a son. When everyone thought she was a female people cared when everyone found out she was male everyone stopped caring.

Simonjt · 14/02/2023 05:43

That poor girl, she must have been absolutely terrified, I can’t imagine how painful it is for her parents. For the parents of her killers, how on earth can they sleep at night knowing they raised murderers.

MaireadMcSweeney · 14/02/2023 06:02

Yesterday my son was in MacDonald's and a teenage boy was stabbed by another teenager. He saw the victim bleeding all over the place while they waited for police and ambulance because the staff locked the doors. Teen knife crime is endemic. Nobody knows why Brianna was stabbed. Speculation is unhelpful.

Teen knife crime isn't the fault of gender critical feminists. Violence against trans people isn't their fault either.

Really?! I have only seen an outpouring of horror that another young person has lost their life to senseless violence.

The political point scoring (on both sides - on Twitter in particular) yesterday was abhorrent.

Blessedwithsunshine · 14/02/2023 06:44

It is a tragedy that we have seen the loss of another beautiful child. I don’t know how the parents will ever come to terms sigh this. Many sources close to the family suggested bullying has been an issue for years, perhaps the police need to start there?

I am surprised the police have so quickly jumped up the conclusion that it is not a hate crime. Given the victim was transgender. I am amazed.

Of course GC people are not responsible in any way for this - knife crime has been growing for decades. Many carry knives because they don’t feel safe, maybe we need to address that issue as a society?

AWaferThinMint · 14/02/2023 06:47

It does need to stop. We need police to be funded and we need a full functional force. One that can both fight crime AND do outreach and prevention work in schools and with young people.

No child should be being murdered as an escalation of bullying. It's horrific.

Veryverycalmnow · 14/02/2023 06:56

This is terribly sad news. I can't begin to imagine the horror for her family. So shocking.

Damnloginpopup · 14/02/2023 06:59

Help it stop then. Join the police. Action, not rhetoric.

I think that’s an odd comment, the very reason we are in the situation of having so many dodgy police officers is exactly because funding has been expanded, and the police force nation wide have had a huge recruitment drive. Most schools have good enough policies around prevent, and courts and police forces do some work in most schools.

Gang violence is a problem. Glamourising weapon carrying another. Maybe some police presence is needed around secondary schools? Towns and areas where teens hang out. Presence and relationships to foster trust. Youth clubs, teen boxing clubs etc all need to be funded and reopened. We need deterrents and sound relatable role models in equal measure.

@Blessedwithsunshine I still remember the police and fire service visiting my schools. Both primary and secondary. The two officers in secondary put the fear of god into us about drugs (it was the 90s).

I don't think it's odd at all to want more police presence. Yes there are a large number of dodgy officers being found, so we also need to fix that. But that issue doesn't prevent community outreach happening as well.

TBH I'd take anything that stops kids being killed. Whatever studies and research show is needed we should do!!!

HRTQueen · 14/02/2023 07:45

this is so sad to read

I don’t understand why this hasn’t been labelled a hate crime they were bullied at school for years

regardless of the arguments about single spaces many children are suffering with how they are feeling and this needs to be accepted and supporters

Brianna Ghey was 16 a life in front of her taken away a child has been murdered and that is tragic

It still happens now in schools, outreach programmes etc. The police force nationwide has been dramatically expanded, your original point was more funding is needed, but missing the actual point that more funding has already been poured into policing. Knife crime is also culturally motivated and not everything can be fixed with more and more money and resources.

Parents also need to take responsibility- check their teens for knives, good education and support etc around the danger of knives.

They are a boy and a girl biologically who have been arrested.

Prescottdanni123 · 14/02/2023 07:58

The police have been an embarrassment lately. First, with Nicola Bulley, they refuse to believe she is anywhere but the river, losing valuable time and allowing the whole world and his dog (literally) to trample all over what is now most likely a crime scene. And now they are refusing to see this as a possible hate crime.
