Soup as a meal? Following on from another post

Just that really.
There seems to be very conflicting thoughts on soup as an evening meal.
We quite often have soup, with hotdogs, burgers (yep you read that right, thanks mum Smile) or toasties.....

How is soup your meal if you have a burger etc with it, surely it is a side or starter.
We have home made soup and bread every other week or so, it's a filling and nice meal.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/02/2023 06:00

Tinned soup isn’t an evening meal. Substantial, home made is.

ModerationInEverything · 09/02/2023 06:01

There are so many different kinds of soup though. Spicy parsnip and pear? Not dinner. Something with protein, lentil, chicken etc definitely dinner.

We have hotdogs or toasties as an alternative to bread.
Don't do burgers now but as a kid my mum did us soup and burgers.

Homemade soup is usually on the weekly meal plan for dinner. With crusty bread. Scones, hot dogs or followed by a hearty pudding. Kids love it, get lots of veg in them too. DH calls them rib stickers, hearty and nourishing.

WandaWonder · 09/02/2023 06:04

If we had a big lunch out yes, or a proper made big soup with heaps of fresh bread and butter yes

watchfulwishes · 09/02/2023 06:05

Yes, soup constitutes a meal. Any food can be served as a meal.

These 'rules' people bandy about are completely made up. They just come from their own early socialisation, which varies widely person to person.

Cambridge dictionary definition of a meal: dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/meal

We often have soup with bread. It is a favourite meal in our house.

Caspianberg · 09/02/2023 06:07

Yes. We often have soup as a meal for either lunch or dinner. Various ones, always homemade though. Dinner ones tend to have some kind of protein and carb in ie chunky lentil or minestrone or lemon chicken with orzo.
Bread and cheese alongside for whoever wants it

Its an easy way to use up things or get a good amount of vegetables into everyone

Suzi888 · 09/02/2023 06:12

Chunky soup or soup with bread - definitely.

hattie43 · 09/02/2023 06:17

I don't consider soup a meal . There's a reason it's a starter in a restaurant and not the main meal .
Having said that a big heart veg soup and crusty bread would fill me up so I wouldn't want anything else .
Nothing wrong with soup whenever you want it but if you said to friends come over for a meal I don't think people would expect just soup

Soup is definitely a meal! There’s so many different kinds, it’s delicious.

For me M&S fresh soups are amazing - keralan chicken or chicken and mushroom. Half of one of those is lovely. I think I’m properly addicted to them.

At home we make red pea soup, which is more of a stew and full of sweet potato, yams, veg and beans so is a very filling meal. The kids love chicken and sweet corn soup with crusty bread or chips to dip in, or sweet potato, chilli and coconut milk which is pretty filling in itself. We also make just a basic vegetable soup and have with bread.

IHeartGeneHunt · 09/02/2023 07:07

I have soup for lunch a lot. I make enough for a few days at a time. This week it's leek and barley. Tinned soup doesn't fill me up though.
@GorgeousLadyofWrestling please can I have your red pea soup recipe?! It sounds delicious!

Always happy to share a soup recipe! It’s Jamaican so has heat to it but if that’s not your preference, there’s still lots of flavour from the other ingredients. We tend to just use stewing beef and slow cook it so it’s really soft and tender.

Soup is a meal. We have it often, home-made, with bread, probably at least once a week, perhaps more. We wouldn’t have burgers or hotdogs with it, though. Just soup and bread. It’s very filling and super nutritious.

Ricco12 · 09/02/2023 07:27

Home made soup and bread I would say yes

Shop bought soup and bread I wouldn't want to do regular as full of salt etc.

We eat loads of homemade soup, my kids will have a cup of soup as a bed time snack if hungry too. For some reason drinking it from a cup is a right treat for them .

I make my own bread too which is always full of lots of seeds etc to try and make it more healthy

This has to be a wind up. Nobody could seriously believe that eating tinned soup has anything to do with obesity. People don't put weight on as a result of eating salt. Just like all other foods, tinned soups vary in calorie count/nutritional content depending on the ingredients. Any made with coconut milk or cream are going to be higher in fat, but in general soup is not high in fat compared to most other fast foods.

Also, consider whether your posts are doing anything to make other parents feel good about themselves and their choices. Mumsnet at its best is a supportive place. You seem keen on bigging up your own choices and putting others down. Not in the spirit, as the MN moderators sometimes say.

hidingbehindascreen · 09/02/2023 07:31

@Armless32
Again you assume.... at no point have I even mentioned a tinned soup, or a supermarket ready meal. Or my home situation.
I work full time. However hubby works from home and cooks 5 days out of 7... always cooks good home cooked food.
If we do have soup, it's homemade. Yes, the hotdogs come out of a tin, but I'm not sure that in the grand scheme of things that makes me an awful parent.
Eesh! A light hearted thread about soup, disrailed by someone assuming!!
