Soup as a meal? Following on from another post

Just that really.
There seems to be very conflicting thoughts on soup as an evening meal.
We quite often have soup, with hotdogs, burgers (yep you read that right, thanks mum Smile) or toasties.....

Ah guys Armless is on another thread throwing conflict around and referring to a dad parenting as 'babysitting'. I think it's safe to ignore them.

Blahburst · 09/02/2023 07:59

my kids’ daddy makes a nice scotch broth, but nothing beats mummy’s hearty beef and tomato pot noodle.

Pinkdafodils · 09/02/2023 07:59

If you really want to believe that store bought bread is healthier than home made you’re burying your head in the sand. Home made is healthier because you don’t have to have sugar and salt added in it.

Plus a million other additives to make supermarket bread last long.

I don’t like tinned soup but home made ones with things like lentils, potatoes, pasta etc with crusty bread is very filling.

countrygirl99 · 09/02/2023 07:59

@Armless32 you need to brush up your reading comprehension. At no point has the OP said she is feeding her DC tinned soup, the opposite in fact. Did you jump to that assumption from the hot dogs?

Soup on its own is not a meal. Although the "massive salad" brigade really love it.

Why would a plate with chicken, 3 X veg and potatoes with gravy be a meal, but if you put that same food in a bowl with some stock instead of the gravy...it's not a meal??

hidingbehindascreen · 09/02/2023 08:00

@Armless32

Wow. Read my VERY FIRST POST. I said soup.... there was no mention of a tin.
I said dad cooks 5x a week all homemade food in another post

And as a matter of fact, he is a far better parent than me, just saying.

You haven't been kind, you have been judgy from the start! With 0 idea of my life, or my family dynamic.

We had congee last night. It’s hard to tell where the rice porridge/soup line falls.

It was not miserable. Nor unhealthy. It was full of chunks of chicken and veg and served with kimchi on top.

Aldisfinest · 09/02/2023 08:02

Tinned or homemade is definitely a meal for me. Could and would eat alone and be full

Not sure where they are finding the time with all the home cooking they must have to do!

I don’t understand this ‘proper meal’ idea.

It’s about getting all your nutrients throughout the day. The amount of time spent cooking doesn’t necessarily equate to the healthiness of the meal!

Sometimes I spend ages cooking a recipe. Sometimes we will have beans on toast
Sometimes we will have soup

liveforsummer · 09/02/2023 08:04

isthistoonosy · 09/02/2023 05:59

How is soup your meal if you have a burger etc with it, surely it is a side or starter.
We have home made soup and bread every other week or so, it's a filling and nice meal.

A hot dog is just bread and protein so not much different to when we have a soup meal accompanied by bread and cheese. Agree a burger is a little more substantial so then soup is the side/starter. We frequently have soup meals, usually home made but sometimes a ton of tomato or mushroom if one a huge hurry. The fact it's tinned and less substantial doesn't change the fact it's out meal and might just have an extra slice of bread

Shesasuperfreak · 09/02/2023 08:04

The lack of salt talk is making the pp food sound so bland.

Salt is needed in a diet.

Can’t wait till your husband shags a colleague, screws you financially in the divorce, never has the kids - leaving you to work yourself into an exhausted stupor every week, leaving your baybeez in childcare Mon-Fri where they will wail and gnash about the lack of homemade organic food before passing out from starvation or eating it and becoming one of those super fat kids you seem obsessed with.

SomePosters · 09/02/2023 08:05

Im a science student and have been studying nutrition and body processes this year.

Your ideas are just that, ideas. I know you haven’t based them in fact because if you’d been within a mile of the facts your wouldn’t spout such rubbish with such confidence.

Tinned soup isn’t making anybody fat. It’s mostly water.

People can get just as fat on homemade food if they eat over large portions and don’t burn the calories.

While many men feign incompetence most are in fact perfectly capable and attitudes like yours do neither men nor women any favours

hryllilegur · 09/02/2023 08:06

Apparently ‘store bought bread’ isn’t good enough either. 🙄

Its always quite funny that these people
don't understand that you assess the quality of a diet over weeks and months. You don’t go about assessing every single meal and then berating someone because their kids ate some tinned soup and hotdogs one Wednesday night.

Caspianberg · 09/02/2023 08:08

Soup has a huge variety

Basic thin carrot soup - probably not that filling for long

Chicken udon noodle soup, goulash soups, creamy soups with beans and lentils - all more filling that say a basic pasta in tomato sauce

anyoneanyoneanyone · 09/02/2023 08:11

Crisps are a meal in my Eyes GrinGinso yes soup is definitely a meal

hidingbehindascreen · 09/02/2023 08:11

@Armless32

Suddenly realised where I'm going wrong... I do in fact need to be a SAHM, with a nanny so I can ride my horse when I like, and who rarely expects my DH to 'babysit' his own children

There we go, once I've done that, I'll never have to open a tin again (cos the nanny will have the tin opener)!!

For me no, my problem with soups is even good homemade ones fill me up very quickly but they don't keep me full, within a couple of hours I'm starving again.

Actually just realised I phrased this wrong. For me it's not a proper dinner (or whatever you call your main meal of a day) however I would eat it for a lunch (although it's not my fav) but definitely prefer a soup with pasta or noodles.

MyPurpleHeart · 09/02/2023 08:13

I'm married to an Irishman and soup and sandwiches is a staple meal over there! You can even order it as a meal out, usually ham cheese and salad in the sandwiches.

OK, I don't often say this, but nobody can be this obtuse by accident. Hitting the report button now.

@Floofyduffypuddy it's two big leeks, 250ml barley, a carrot, herbs (I put thyme and a bay leaf) chopped up and covered with chicken stock, I tend to do it in the slow cooker overnight but you can cook it on the hob for about an hour. Coconut milk is nice in it too.
