Soup as a meal? Following on from another post

Just that really.
There seems to be very conflicting thoughts on soup as an evening meal.
We quite often have soup, with hotdogs, burgers (yep you read that right, thanks mum Smile) or toasties.....

@Armless32

You have no idea what you are talking about do you?

My kids have a completely normal relationship with food, know about good nutrition and the good and bad things in their diet. You started patent shaming by assuming that my kids survived on Tina, when I hadn't even mentioned it.

You are now assuming they are fat, and will have an unhealthy lifestyle.... my 14 year old is 6ft1, a healthy weight and goes to the gym 3x a week, he plans to join the navy.

You have offended me every time you have posted.

Heinz tomato soup and a cheese toastie (made with shop-bought bread 🤐) to dunk in it is pure heaven.

Cuwins · 09/02/2023 07:48

For me no, my problem with soups is even good homemade ones fill me up very quickly but they don't keep me full, within a couple of hours I'm starving again.

Just open another tin 🤷‍♀️

HellsCominWithMe · 09/02/2023 07:50

Yep. It is a meal. We have it with a toastie. Tinned or homemade. Tinned soup is so so convenient and a lot better than it used to be and I won’t judge anyone for eating it. Especially good when you have people with different tastes. DC prefers tomato. I prefer something spicy. We can both get what we want for dinner for around £1.10.

we even have soup for breakfast sometimes. Usually if it’s freezing cold and I’ve ran out of oats/milk.

MollyRover · 09/02/2023 07:50

We do homemade soup and soda bread once a week. I make a soda bread every 2 weeks and freeze half for the next week.

Stop trying to make her fat on salt!

Teeshirt · 09/02/2023 07:51

Soup is more filling than solid food, though, and keeps you feeling full for longer. There have been studies done on it.

hryllilegur · 09/02/2023 07:51

A soup can just be a more watery stew. Why would one be dinner and the other not?

It would depend on the soup, but I don’t see any reason why soup is just for lunch.

It’s also not true that soup is always a starter in a restaurant. Pho is not a starter. Nor is ramen usually.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/02/2023 07:51

I beg to differ @Armless32 You were most definitely judging!

Home made tomato soup with a cheese and ham toastie, yes that’s an evening meal right there. Another favourite if ours is Tom yum prawn soup with loads of noodles in.

it’s funny isn’t it, what we consider a “proper meal” or not. A bit like the obsession that we must have one “hot meal” a day. Socialisation as one pp said

DillDanding · 09/02/2023 07:52

If you’re having hotdogs/burgers/toasties PLUS soup, that’s hardly ‘soup as a meal’.

My husband quite often makes broccoli and Stilton soup. It’s filling, so we’ll have just that for dinner with nothing extra.

Quite. And miso soup is often served with other main dishes.

miso soup with dumplings or tofu is pretty filling for a thin soup.

Hmm Salt to their hair? Mummy? Getting fat on tinned soup? Get a grip.

As a Mummy? How old / twee are you?

And neither did anyone say they were feeding their kids tinned soup every night, so you can chill on the virtue signalling.

Nothing wrong with this, in fact this is what I am having tonight, a bowl of soup with two finger rolls with a hot dog in each :-)

Soup is not a dinner. No matter how homemade/yummy/substantial. I’d find it quite miserable to come home hungry and be offered that.

Seriously?

you’d be miserable to come home to this? (Laksa, which is soup)

Op ignore Armless. They are either on the wind or a complete knob. Possibly both.

@Armless32 yes I don't buy shop bread due to salt and additives , I use a bread maker on a timer when I go to bed it takes about 2 minutes to set up and we wake up every day to a nice hot loaf.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Canned soup is super convenient, but it's also one of the most highly processed packaged foods you can eat.

35 years ago when my older kids were small, we would have roast chicken on Sunday, homemade chicken pie on Monday, and chicken and veg soup with homemade bread on Tuesday. Most definitely all meals!

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 09/02/2023 07:57

Soup on its own is not a meal. Although the "massive salad" brigade really love it.

00100001 · 09/02/2023 07:58

If chicken casserole is a meal, the chicken and veg soup is a meal
