Where is the absolute best beach in the U.K.?

and why is it the best?

Would like some ideas for where I’ve missed and where I must go. A bucket and spade list.
( Children grown and flown. Got some dogs. Camping good. Like quiet and big skies and peace)

I have a very soft spot and fond memories of Oxwich bay. sand dunes. BBQs and sleeping out. Shooting stars. Miles of empty sand.

Barafundle in Pembrokeshire. Or 3 Cliffs Bay in the Gower

It has to be any beach in Pembrokeshire for me. Caerfai is the top of my Pembs list.

Bamburgh

Nailed it with the first answer

Luskentyre. Without a shadow of a doubt. There are loads of other beautiful beaches. But Luskentyre is breathtaking

Botany Bay, Broadstairs. Not in the summer holidays though, it is rammed. You can walk up the coast a bit and it is quieter.

St Ninian's Ayre on Shetland. Beach with sea on 2 sides. Absolutely stunning.

Saying that you would be hard pressed to find a beach that isn’t gorgeous on Shetland, well worth visiting.

gogohmm · 08/02/2023 21:45

My favourite ones are in Scotland, Shetland in particular has amazing beaches but bring a fleece!

Shhh @OhBeAFineGuyKissMe

These northern ones are very cold tho. I mean the sea is. And a swim in the sea is a must for me at a beach.

I know whereof I speak re cold btw - I used to live in Whitby and even on a scorching hot day the sea was baltic.

anyway. I would say Pembrokeshire, lovely empty beaches (tho apparently not so much lately). My fave one is a secret and too many people already know about it OP, but you can have Barafundle or Tenby Castle or Newgale or Freshwater West (there's lots of room there too)

Another vote for Pembrokeshire, and especially Barafundle.

Another for Harris! Beautiful beaches!

Saltburn

Saltburn has an amazing beach and a lovely pier. One of the most under rated places in the country.

clary · 08/02/2023 21:47

Ah I didn't say why. Well my fave of those is Freshie West, amazing skies, crashing waves, pebbles and rockpools, masses of sand, surfers to watch. Bit tricky to actually swim there but worth a go.

PurpleButterflyWings · 08/02/2023 21:47

Barmouth - West Wales. Beautiful. ❤

Gloriousgardener11 · 08/02/2023 21:47

Crantock, Cornwall.

faffadoodledo · 08/02/2023 21:47

Luskentyre and Scarista are incredible. Many hidden gems closer to home in Cornwall. But I'm not divulging!

Harlech! I don't know if I'll ever go back there, so far away

Christmasbird · 08/02/2023 21:49

Barafundle is shut, definitely don't go there 😉

adamsaboutnothing · 08/02/2023 21:50

Danes Dyke is the best dog friendly beach we have been to due to it being uncrowded. Flamborough is dog friendly too but no good for our reactive dog in summer.

Is it Skrinkle Haven?
