What is the nicest (lighthearted!) thing anyone has ever said to you?

I’m thinking more silly things than telling you that you are the best X in the world, brilliant at your job etc, but obviously those are lovely and very welcome too!

Years ago my partner put The Little Mermaid on for his youngest daughter. When it got to the bit where Ursula disguises herself as Vanessa, DSD turns to my partner and said “this is the bit where she does the spell so she looks like SophieLaGiraffe!”.

I really don’t think it’s true, but remembering it always cheers me right up if I’m having a bad day!

Please share your lovely compliments 😊

A friend said to me "the more time I spend with you the more time I want to spend with you"

As a very young, very nervous solicitor I had to argue a point of law (contract) in front of a very curmudgeonly old district justice. I stood up and explained our position and he turned around to the courtroom and said "and that was a perfect exposition of the law on this subject". Gave me a big boost.

My son told me I am the most likeable person he knows. Still my favourite compliment.

As an overweight person with not lots of money at the time, I have never forgotten the complete stranger who came up to me in Tesco about 15 years ago and told me that they loved my outfit. Thank you Stranger.

I love this thread. Full of really lovely things that have been said, and it shows that the 'little' things aren't little at all 🥰

I was a tearaway at school. Skiver, refused uniform and could be a nightmare. I got kicked out at 15.

I somehow ended up back there working as an adult and my old year head was still there and scooped me into a huge hug and said i was always her favourite whirlwind and it was nice to see me back. She obviously saw something in me that I didn't and I'll always remember that.

A patient once told me I had the kindest eyes. I thought that was lovely as I was having a real shit day at work

About 15 years ago I managed a lovely woman who’d been treated horribly in a previous job because of her sexuality. As I left I said something along the lines of don’t ever feel you need to change who you are because you’re bloody awesome.
Just before covid on International Women’s day she tagged me in a video on Facebook of her being interviewed by some media company. They asked her what the best advice she’d ever been given was and she quoted me back. I’d totally forgotten saying it but still stand by it.

Was flattered she’d remembered.

My DD was 2 and she cuddled up to me and said “I have lots of kisses in my feelings”. She’s 22 now and I still don’t think anyone has said anything nicer.

My auntie told me that my DH said to her that I am his ‘joy’ and I like that a lot too.

This is adorable 💖

"You're the funniest person I know" cheers me up when I'm feeling a bit flat.

I had my leaving do at my old job recently, and the colleague giving my leaving speech burst into tears while doing so.

Another colleague remarked "that's when you know you've made it, you've the impact you've had on all of us, we're so sad to see you go."

I nearly burst into tears myself at that, it was such a lovely thing to say.

"that's the impact you've had"

Staying with student daughter in her university house daughter said 'I'm so thankful that my friends were always welcome at our house, I'm glad you've made it normal to have people round and feed them and make them welcome.'

She regularly hosts, feeds and looks after people, and says it comes naturally cos she learnt it from me. Makes me so happy I've passed something important to me down, and even more so that she recognised this and values it.

My oldest ds on having his first child told me and dh he wanted to provide his son with the childhood he and his siblings had. Kind of expecting a funny moment I asked him to sum up his childhood he said 'idyllic!'

We are taking that :)

My 4 year old daughter told me proudly on the way home from school ‘You are better than nothing, Mummy’! She meant it as a compliment but her 9 year old brother cracked up laughing and heartily agreed with her.

SingingSands · 08/02/2023 00:15

"You were always your grandad's favourite". ❤️

My gran told me this, when I was all grown up with children of my own. She was a brutally honest woman, often blunt. One day she was reminiscing and she told me this. It made me cry a little.

Mammyloveswine · 08/02/2023 00:32

My son asked me today "mam will you always look like you do now?" I said that I'd be getting older and he said "but you'll always still look beautiful" SmileSmileSmile💕

Saracen · 08/02/2023 01:47

When the midwife come to visit a few days after the birth of my eldest child, she said, "You act like she's your fourth baby" because I was so chilled. Looking after a baby came naturally to me.

Saracen · 08/02/2023 01:51

My teenaged DC's two best friends enjoyed my banter so much that they often invited me to join their group chats. On one occasion I'd said something they thought was hilarious. DC messaged me privately to say, "MUM. You are not allowed to be cooler than me in front of my friends."

Deathraystare · 08/02/2023 08:30

I was really surprised recently when a friend mentioned my good posture. My what?! Apparently she was serious! I always thought I slumped. Perhaps I was more conscious of doing so than I thought?

PermanentlyinUAT · 08/02/2023 08:37

I don’t know if it was buying wine aged 43 in M&S and getting ID’d, getting ID’d buying cutlery (knives) in TK Maxx aged 32 or having one of the gruff dudes in Kennedy airport security saying “wow, you in no way look 33”

Either way I was thrilled with all of them. I may not look my age but there are days when I feel it!

daisy2002 · 08/02/2023 08:49

I was an altruistic kidney donor, my surgeon came to see me after the op and he told me I had a beautiful kidney 😁

Somethingsnappy · 08/02/2023 10:09

A good few years ago, I was in Italy visiting a friend, and we went into a local cafe. The owner took one look at me and said, 'it's Mary Poppins!'. That was my funniest compliment.

My loveliest one recently... We were listening to a folk singer I love who has a beautiful voice, and my ds(6) said 'she sounds just like you when you sing mummy'. I still glow from that one.

wonkylegs · 08/02/2023 11:01

I'm on some pretty serious meds and have been for over 20 years. I'm monitored quite a bit including my liver function. When I got TB I had to have antibiotics which for that are particularly nasty.
One day at that time when going through my blood results with my specialist nurse he remarked that I had a 'cast iron liver' as I cope so well with all my treatments.
I know I'm just 'lucky' as I have nothing to do with it but it still made me smile

It's the same as when I was getting my smear test and the nurse remarked that I had "a very neat cervix," i'm not sure how you are supposed to respond to that so I just said thank you! 🧐

MintJulia · 08/02/2023 11:09

When I left a company years ago, a man I didn't know, in another department, wrote in my leaving card, 'to a glorious child of the sixties and a vanishing dream".

I was completely stumped for a reply but it was a lovely thing to say. 🙂

purpledalmation · 08/02/2023 11:39

'You're much prettier than your ID badge' I thought I looked nice in the photo!

Justputitdown · 08/02/2023 11:44

A year 7 told me I was enchanting last week 😄
