Why does Surrey seem to have quite a few stuck up people

UrbanMan27 · 01/02/2023 20:49

I was working in Surrey today and people there seem to turn their nose up a certain people. Why are people like that there? Has anyone else noticed this there?

They're proud that it's the only country with no Iceland supermarket.

xsquared · 01/02/2023 21:04

Did you meet everyone single person in Surrey to come to that conclusion op?

If not, then that's a tad sweeping.

There are probably lots of down to earth people that you didn't meet, or perhaps you just remembered the negative.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story, will you Smile

OP, tell me more. Sadly it's a trait everywhere but what's happened for Surrey to earn this generalisation today?

I’ve a friend in Surrey - last time I saw her, her nose was in the usual position, not turned up. So there’s at least one person (2 actually because her husband didn’t have his turned up either) who haven’t got this issue with their noses.

Their names are Jennifer and Scott - did you meet absolutely everyone in Surrey including them?

No, but from what I saw of the people, it's professionals who like to look down on people doing manual jobs. It just feels of vibes ''I'm better than you'' attitude.

I live in Surrey, I know some people who could be considered stuck up and a lot more people who aren't, pretty much the same everywhere.

And there is definitely an Iceland supermarket or 2

Shitfather · 01/02/2023 21:18

I bought a ceiling lampshade off eBay from a woman who lived in a multi-million pound mansion in a gated community in Surrey. It was another world. I wondered why someone so rich needed to flog shit on eBay. Anyway, she was pleasant enough. So, you can add her to the “naice” list.

Yes, very sarcastic of you! I mean certain places like Guildford, Cobham etc. seem to have people who don't respect the working classes. It seems very Tory there! They just don't want to know you if your poor or do a manual job!

I live in Surrey, have voted for every major political party over the years and I can swear like nobody’s business. Still think that makes me stuck up?

No of course not.

I'm sorry that happened to you.

You may find others who are not so stuck up. Most of my family live in the Surrey area and have a range of professions, from food server to gp. None of them are stuck up, bit of course I'm a little biased.

I don't think it's a Surrey specific thing either.

redspottedmug · 01/02/2023 21:24

Where do you live the OP? So I can return the favour of a sweeping generalisation.

Greenshake · 01/02/2023 21:25

Sorry OP, my post was snippy. I didn’t need to say that.

Floofyduffypuddy · 01/02/2023 21:27

I've not really been, are there parts that are more posh than others?

You're.

SurreyMumOfOne · 01/02/2023 21:30

Hang on a minute, OP. If you're from Worthing you must be aged at least 80 and have failing eyesight so how would you actually have seen people allegedly turning up their noses.

Do let us know once you've been to Specsavers,

Lorrymum · 01/02/2023 21:31

I was in Farnham, Surrey yesterday. I was shocked to see a few beggars in the Main Street. Lots of empty shops and the local department store, Elphicks, had a security man at the main door. Very odd when most of the shoppers where well heeled ladies of a certain age.

SulisMinerva · 01/02/2023 21:35

Surrey is like most places - a mix of people and neighbourhoods. It has a reputation for being ‘posh’, probably due to being a commuter town with a significant amount of people who work in London in well-paid jobs. However, it also has its areas of high deprivation.

I know people who are poor and others who are very well-off. The latter are not stuck-up. Some people have done well for themselves due to increasing house prices. Most people who live and work in the area have jobs paying pretty normal salaries.

There are likely some who look down their noses at others but lots of places have those types. It’s not a special feature of Surrey.

Shodan · 01/02/2023 21:35

There are some like that, yes.

There are many who are not.

Tell you what though. There's some really rude people who come up from the coast and make sweeping, insulting, judgemental statements about where I live.

I don't like those people.

Spendonsend · 01/02/2023 21:38

Well yes the MPs in Surrey are all conservative (I think) and generally are, although j do remember Guildford had a lib dem once. But its not the only place with conservative MPs or they wouldnt be in power.
There is a big variety of people here though.

SeasonFinale · 01/02/2023 21:44

UrbanMan27 · 01/02/2023 21:27

Worthing

Ah everywhere must seem posher to you then not just Surrey Grin

Lindy2 · 01/02/2023 21:44

So where were you OP, Guildford or Cobham? They are about 10 miles apart so tricky to judge everyone in both places in just 1 day.

I'm in Surrey and I work for a "trades' person. I can confirm that 99% of our customers in Surrey treat us "trades" people with a great deal of respect because decent reliable, skilled tradesmen/women are often pretty hard to find and they want a good relationship with someone who will do a good job for them. That includes Cobham and Guildford.

If they were looking down their noses at you, you were probably doing something that was pissing everyone off. Rather than starting a public argument or fight Surrey people tend to go for the more subtle responses of looking down their noses, eye rolling and potentially also tutting, when very annoyed.
