Why does Surrey seem to have quite a few stuck up people

I was working in Surrey today and people there seem to turn their nose up a certain people. Why are people like that there? Has anyone else noticed this there?

For the sake of accuracy I would just point out that Feltham most definitely is not in Surrey Shock.

And the debate about historic county boundaries, postcodes etc comes up regularly on here and is beyond tedious.

Deathraystare · 02/02/2023 15:04

I lived in |Surry a while. Shitty place called Shirley quite near East Croydon so absolutely nothing to be stuck up about!!!!

Isseywith3witchycats · 02/02/2023 15:20

You obviously were in one the better parts of Surrey not New Addington or Thornton heath Surrey has pockets of super wealthy people and ordinary down to earth people and some very deprived people like any county

Ha ha I lived in Surrey for a while. It is a bit golf and bankers. And whilst I met plenty of perfectly nice people there, I did come across a good dollop of snobs. One memorable encounter was a woman who brayed “Oh, you’re from the North. You must find the houses so much nicer down here.” I told her I thought Knaresborough had far prettier houses than Egham, on the whole.

No, but from what I saw of the people, it's professionals who like to look down on people doing manual jobs. It just feels of vibes ''I'm better than you'' attitude.

Any part of the country where you find people who have lots of money, and you will find that some of them have this attitude.

And of course the stockbroker belt has more than its fair share of loaded people...

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 02/02/2023 16:23

I take it you wasn't in Park Barn? 😄 yes lots of Tory voting snobs, lots of very down to each manual labourers too. Lots of people who don't give a shit about voting for anyone.

Tara336 · 02/02/2023 16:39

I will contribute and add some parts of Hampshire are shocking for snobbery, there will always be those that like too feel superior when really they are no better then the rest of us.

I love it here. Yes it's got it's problems, where hasn't? Everything is on your doorstep and so easy. Having grown up in the middle of Dartmoor and driving to Plymouth to go clubbing! Loads of supermarkets and shops, easy into London on a rare occasion, 2 airports, so much countryside and beauty : Windsor castle and Virginia water lake, the Surrey downs and Box Hill have spectacular views. Where else do you think I should move that's any better?

Ooh i grew up in Tavistock and also used to travel into Plymouth for the clubs and the sea!

I now live in Surrey. People are politer here but I miss the sea 🙁

Small world, how funny Jewel!

DosCervezas · 02/02/2023 16:51

Posh people in Surrey you say, no way. But they're probably better neighbours than the riff raff I have, who don't know what day it is to put their bins out , openly smoke cannabis on the doorstep when kids are playing out, leave their dogs barking in the garden all day , live off takeaways and all bought their kids 40 mph electric scooters for Christmas. I'd love posh neighbours , but Surrey is out of my price range!

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 02/02/2023 11:50

Every MP in Surrey certainly is NOT a Tory! Ours is Ed Davey.

Never mind.

Hang on a minute, OP. If you're from Worthing you must be aged at least 80 and have failing eyesight so how would you actually have seen people allegedly turning up their noses.

Do let us know once you've been to Specsavers,

Sorry this made me chuckle.

Such a goady weird thread so at least it's humorous .

Sparkletastic · 02/02/2023 17:01

Spend the day in Redhill then get back to me.

Seeline · 02/02/2023 17:19

@Deathraystare and @Isseywith3witchycats Shirley, New Addington and Thornton Heath are all London not Surrey (London Borough if Croydon).
It's increasingly obvious that anywhere in the south east of England is actually part of Surrey......

minefieldmess · 02/02/2023 17:23

I know people from the Heath who say they live in Surrey 😆

Small world, how funny Jewel!

I wonder if we ever bumped into each other! 🤔

minefieldmess · 02/02/2023 17:25

And as a Londoner I know Croydon is in London but it's not really 😆

Deathraystare · 02/02/2023 18:41

@Seeline ·

It was deffo Surrey when I lived there. Now everywhere seems to be part of London. The car park at the end of our back garden was actually under Kent at the time!

newnamethanks · 02/02/2023 19:50

By the time I die, Greater London will end at Brighton. All the aforementioned not in Surreys were in Surrey until the boundaries were redrawn.

Equimum · 02/02/2023 20:00

I live in West Sussex, same as the OP, and there are plenty of snobby people round here. Granted though, we are pretty much in the Surrey border 😆

Oblomov22 · 02/02/2023 20:18

@Jewelanemone, probably, as we were clearly at school together. I may know some of the people you know, if you grew up there.

Yep - London since 1965 😁

allthelittlelights · 02/02/2023 22:16

I lived in Richmond for years, nice but also boring and expensive.

The clue is in the name - London Borough of Richmond upon Thames!
Not Surrey.
Unless it was Richmond, Yorkshire. In which case - still not Surrey.
