Why does Surrey seem to have quite a few stuck up people

I was working in Surrey today and people there seem to turn their nose up a certain people. Why are people like that there? Has anyone else noticed this there?

Rude. Generalisation. Where were you? Guildford or Cobham? And what were doing there? Working? Professionals who look down on manual workers? Do tell. I'll read your next post once I'm back from Iceland. There's quite a few Icelands in Surrey, 10 I think : Staines, Egham,Feltham. The one in Addlestone has just closed, which is most inconvenient and inconsiderate.

Oblomov22 · 02/02/2023 07:12

Surrey is diverse. So much money. Many houses a million plus. Chelsea football training ground. Also poverty, many many council houses, has the highest proportion of children on free school meals, and very deprived families, compared to any of its neighbouring counties. So?

Pumpupthejampumpitup · 02/02/2023 07:31

I know Surrey quite well. Have lived in various parts of it over the years. I’ve no time for snobby people.

I have some great guys who are plumbers, sparks, etc who work for me from time to time. They get the full tea/coffee AND chocolate biscuits when they come over. I treasure them!

At the moment, I have a good friend living in Cobham, and I must say, it does have a different vibe about it. It may be because of the American school and so it attracts a different crowd. Or maybe because of the Fulham training ground? 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Oblomov22 I stand corrected. Chelsea training ground…

Yes, very sarcastic of you! I mean certain places like Guildford, Cobham etc. seem to have people who don't respect the working classes. It seems very Tory there! They just don't want to know you if your poor or do a manual job!

You really are nasty aren't you? Making a sodding big assumption aboutcthe interaction between trades peoplexznd those who employ them
Suspect anyone from any country would look down their noses at people such as you with your attitude and judginess

Claysta · 02/02/2023 08:03

I went to Guildford the other day and thought it looked a bit run down, lots of empty shops up the cobbled street. A few years back I did go for a walk with family in the Surrey Hills and was asked by a red cord trousered old boy if I was from ‘in county’ … errrr no, I’m from Berkshire.. that’s ROYAL Berkshire .. I can see Windsor Castle and hear the horses at Ascot .. (I can’t) but honestly … sigh!

Oblomov22 · 02/02/2023 08:04

Snooty? No.
Manual trades are respected round here. Trying to get an electrician, plumber, carpenter, builder is like gold dust! They are respected. Dh's brother is a builder. Ds1 worked in screwfix locally and is now working there in Nottingham, at Uni. No snobby ness or nose 👃 looking down at trade people. Everyone is desperate to get a 'leccy'.

Oblomov22 · 02/02/2023 08:06

I agree with Clay. Just about everywhere I've been recently, including Guildford, looks run down, poor and scabby. So sad.

Notjusta · 02/02/2023 08:10

I went to Worthing and everyone was ancient.

IvySquirrel · 02/02/2023 08:11

I'm from the Midlands and have lived in Surrey for 25 years. It's certainly a wealthy area but like everywhere most people are lovely and treat others with respect.
I'm pretty middle class and my kids went to private school but currently living in a poorer estate and don't really see much difference in attitudes.
I held a lot of stereotypes about Surrey before I lived here but now think it's a great place to live.

Hoppinggreen · 02/02/2023 08:17

I have only been once so not exactly vast experience of Surrey and it was to a posh golf club so probably not representative of the whole county BUT I have to say it was full of arseholes.
We we’re running an event and had hired a room in the club and we were being constantly pestered by old white men in pastels complaining that they wanted to use the room “because they were members you know”. The ( mostly) young staff were in a bit of a panic about it and management was nowhere to be found but some Yorkshire bluntness soon sorted it out. We had a few none white people at our event as well and they reported feeling a bit uncomfortable.

Might have just been that particular venue though

Thekidsarefightingagain · 02/02/2023 08:39

I was really surprised by how friendly people are here when I moved to Surrey. I used to think of Surrey as a very rich, snooty and very unfriendly place - was very guilty of stereotyping! Lots of people I've met who moved from other parts of the UK have said the same.

newnamethanks · 02/02/2023 08:46

OP, I offer you Croydon. You may well change your mind in your rush to return to Worthing.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 02/02/2023 08:52

There are wankers everywhere, it seems.

Very true. I would LOVE to find a good electrician. I'll swap details if anyone is looking for a brilliant plasterer. :)

But, going back to OP, while I have never found anyone to be snooty about trades (wouldn't dare they are so rare and highly sought after) I do agree that people are obsessed with material wealth. Even my dearest friends locally who have more between their ears than their income, have a far stronger attachment to status-through-wealth than anywhere else. Non-stop talk of cars, how far up the mountain their ski chalet is etc. Bores me and DH rigid so we are moving. Surrey is breathtaking beautiful and safe and has excellent schools but we never totally fitted here because we just don't care about material wealth and it shows in our non-designer clothes and old banger of a very uncool car.

Croydon is in London.

And whilst most people in Surrey are very pleasant, so are most Croydon folk.

Also why do people think Guildford and Cobham are all if Surrey? The eastern half of the county - Dorking, Esher, Reigate, Epsom, Banstead, Oxted etc never get a mention! I spent all my working life in Surrey and can confirm, that just like anywhere else, there are lovely people as well as not so nice ones. I really don't think Surrey is different in this respect.

Activelyannoyed · 02/02/2023 09:10

Can you detail some of these exchanges which has led you to this assumption?

Oblomov22 · 02/02/2023 09:13

I love it here. Yes it's got it's problems, where hasn't? Everything is on your doorstep and so easy. Having grown up in the middle of Dartmoor and driving to Plymouth to go clubbing! Loads of supermarkets and shops, easy into London on a rare occasion, 2 airports, so much countryside and beauty : Windsor castle and Virginia water lake, the Surrey downs and Box Hill have spectacular views. Where else do you think I should move that's any better?

Prettypaisleyslippers · 02/02/2023 09:38

Surrey is great, lots of great schools and nice people. Big numbers of people are moving here, so it must be appealing to people not from Worthing.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 02/02/2023 11:50

Every MP in Surrey certainly is NOT a Tory! Ours is Ed Davey.

Seeline · 02/02/2023 12:24

Ed Davey represents Kingston and Surbiton which is in the London Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Therefore not Surrey.

Oblomov22 · 02/02/2023 12:32

Surrey is quite big. Guildford in the middle. Those places like Surbiton mentioned used to be Surrey but are now Greater London.

Why does Surrey seem to have quite a few stuck up people
NowDoYouBelieveMe · 02/02/2023 13:12

Just heard the news that the chippy in Farnham, Surrey has been fined £5,000 for smelling too much like fish n chips! 😂

Beyond satire.

BethDuttonsTwin · 02/02/2023 13:19

The thread title made me laugh as I know exactly the kind of outraged responses you’ll be getting for committing the unforgivable crime of “generalising”. Years ago I posted under another user name about how my ex H - children’s father was off on holiday for six weeks for the second time in a year. My mistake was to say “AIBU to think it makes you a shit parent to do this?” No one seemed to care that my ex was doing this, just that I might have cast aspersions on any unknown to me, parent who might have to be away from their child for six weeks 🙄

Agreed, people on here have incredibly thin skins sometimes.

And yes, the op has already been called "nasty" (the ultimate MN insult, ahead of "childish" 🙃) by page 2.

I wonder how this many posters have the energy to be permanently outraged.
