These flat baking trays are dangerous

This only happened in the last hour and I am still shaking. I decided to make some cookies and used a Lakeland baking tray I got as a Christmas present. It is flat, with one side raised for you to grip and seemed oversized and awkward for the oven shelf. Similar to the one below. Anyway, after ten minutes in the oven I decided to check on my biscuits and wasn't concentrating fully as I did so, causing about three of the biscuits to slide off the edge of the tray. One fell right into the flame of the gas oven and caught fire. I managed to turn the oven off and somehow (god knows how I didn't burn myself) swatted at the flame with a tea towel, it went out but then reignited. I managed to grab some tongs and get the bsicuit out of the oven. It was very scary and I feel awfully shook up. That baking tray has gone straight in the bin. Please beware of these edgeless trays, I don't think they are safe to make small goods on at all.

Surely you noticed that there was no edge.

In general, when something is caused by you not concentrating on it, it’s best not to go online and issue a warning about how dangerous the equipment is.

Ridiculous. People have been cooking with flat trays for hundreds of years. the fact you muffed getting one out of the oven isn't a reason to ban them.

Things do tend to slide off trays with no edges. Please make sure you concentrate when mixing fire and energy sources like biscuits that have fat in them

We’re you using it the wrong way round?

I would assume the raised edge goes at the back to stop stuff falling into the oven when you remove the tray.

i wouldn’t have thought it was a grip? That would mean you lift the tray and everything falls off the other side- as you discovered…..

Sorry OP but you wrote it like a Mr Bean sketch and it made me laugh! Or like the Frasier sketch of Niles and the iron and the fire he caused.
Hope you're ok. Some of us are more careful than others and everyone needs to learn their boundaries - I wouldn't like a baking tray with no edges I'm sure I'd get in a right pickle.

Oh i always put the raised edge at the back to avoid this, and slide it forwards to grab hold of it to get it out 🤷🏻‍♀️

I caught some pork chops on fire by cooking them under the grill (and getting distracted). I don't think we should ban grills because of my lack of attention. . .

Wouldn't closing the oven door and then turning off the gas got rid of the fire?

I've been doing it wrong all this time... always had the raised edge at the front. Never had an accident with it though.

They are great trays because you get maximum use out of the space. More cookies!

For future reference, turn the oven off and leave it closed to suffocate the fire. It’s much safer than trying to dislodge whatever is on fire because you risk injuring yourself or spreading the fire. Once the fire is out keep the door closed another 10 minutes to make sure it is definitely out.
(Not being funny just making sure you don’t hurt yourself)

The only reason I use edgeless trays like those is to put at the bottom of the oven to catch any drips / fallen food / crumbs from falling to the bottom and getting burnt on. Makes cleaning the oven much easier!

I like them, although I did shoot a whole tray of chips into the oven when my arm kind of jerked while lifting them out.

I use them with the raised edge forwards and just tilt them slightly so that if the things are inclined to slide they do it forwards not back. (And I don't have a gas oven)

Each to their own - we've got some trays with edges all round too but they're not as good for some things.

You don't mention your oven gloves that you no doubt didn't bother using.

As well as being able to keep a good grip on hot trays, they double as a fire blanket smother burning biscuits.
