These flat baking trays are dangerous

This only happened in the last hour and I am still shaking. I decided to make some cookies and used a Lakeland baking tray I got as a Christmas present. It is flat, with one side raised for you to grip and seemed oversized and awkward for the oven shelf. Similar to the one below. Anyway, after ten minutes in the oven I decided to check on my biscuits and wasn't concentrating fully as I did so, causing about three of the biscuits to slide off the edge of the tray. One fell right into the flame of the gas oven and caught fire. I managed to turn the oven off and somehow (god knows how I didn't burn myself) swatted at the flame with a tea towel, it went out but then reignited. I managed to grab some tongs and get the bsicuit out of the oven. It was very scary and I feel awfully shook up. That baking tray has gone straight in the bin. Please beware of these edgeless trays, I don't think they are safe to make small goods on at all.

I don't think they are dangerous per se but there is certainly more risk of things sliding off them.

sandranista · 01/02/2023 14:39

You need an electric oven

Surely you noticed that there was no edge.

In general, when something is caused by you not concentrating on it, it’s best not to go online and issue a warning about how dangerous the equipment is.

This!

I was just saying to the wife how dangerous gas ovens are, should ban them. I’ve heard of people dropping biscuits into the flames, wouldn’t happen if we didn’t have gas ovens

rwalker · 01/02/2023 14:41

You’ve panicked

Lesson learnt turn oven off and shut the door it would of burnt out

Carlycat · 01/02/2023 14:41

User error. Concentration is key. Very scary though. I hope you're ok Flowers

Unicorn2022 · 01/02/2023 14:42

Is it awful that all I can think about is what a waste of biscuits 🍪

Allthelego · 01/02/2023 14:43

@PortiasBiscuit I did smile at your second post to explain your first.

Dreamstate · 01/02/2023 14:43

Only one biscuit was hurt in the making of this thread 🍪

AmyDudley · 01/02/2023 14:43

Not sure why a tray with no edges is necessary, but I'm from a era before fire was invented so what would I know? Grin I sympathise OP - I regularly have arguments with kitchen equipment, and it is probably my fault, but it doesn't make it any less scary when you have an incident, hope you are feeling Ok now - have a cup of tea and a sit down. As an aside - Borders biscuits are really nice and taste homemade and save you having to make your own !

sevenbyseven · 01/02/2023 14:44

Baking sheets are a perfectly ordinary traditional piece of kitchen equipment. Please fish it out of the bin and either use it or give it away to someone who will.

RomansTheyGoTheHouse · 01/02/2023 14:51

This thread is making me chuckle so much!

From the OP who is concerned about a burning cookie in an oven that is designed to safely contain a naked gas flame. And then throws a brand new tray away before learning they've ben using it the wrong way round all along...

To the use of the word muffed by a poster (as in 'you muffed taking it out the oven').

To the poster who shugs that thinks catch fire all the time in their oven and they just shut the door (I know that's the right thing to do, it just makes me chuckle that it's an everyday occurence in your house Grin)

Favouritefruits · 01/02/2023 14:51

Which ever idiot gave you the baking tray for Christmas gets the burned biscuit!

Nah, I've got two of these flat trays and I love them. When you're dishing out the oven chips or biscuits or whatever you've cooked on them, you only need to slide them off the tray onto the plate or cooling rack, using a spatula.

If there are sides, you have to lift stuff up, right? Or tilt the tray right over to pour them out. Seems like more of a faff.

The kind I have have (low) raised edges on three sides and no edge at the front so best of both worlds - can slide things off and stuff doesn't fall off when you're getting it in and out of the oven.

Whatmarbles · 01/02/2023 14:53

The raised edge goes at the back to deflect the gas flame over the tray for an even bake.

crosspusscrossstitcher · 01/02/2023 14:55

As others have said, you've used it back-to-front.

The lip should go at the back to stop your baking falling off when you move the tray.

I'd also never, ever have a gas oven/cooker for the reasons you've given. Electric and ceramic hob for me.

Ooh - where did you get those, please?

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 01/02/2023 15:07

I can understand why you are shaken up and don't want to use it again but don't throw it away. Either give it to a charity shop so someone with greater powers of concentration can use it or if you genuinely feel that this design of bling (which has been in existence for literally hundreds of years) is too dangerous, put it into your metal recycling.

megletthesecond · 01/02/2023 15:19

I've used those baking sheets, almost daily for 20 years with no problems.

Hankunamatata · 01/02/2023 15:20

It's literally a baking sheet

Baconand · 01/02/2023 15:32

Bloody hell, if you think that’s dangerous @Hagrod wait until you discover knives….

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 01/02/2023 15:32

Bet you’re really pleased you posted OP. 😂

Mind you, I’d retrieve the tray from the bin and hit over the head the fucker that thought it made a good Christmas gift!

Unicorn2022 · 01/02/2023 15:35

I thought all baking trays were flat with no sides until I realised I had been using all mine upside down. Took ages to clean the chicken casserole from the bottom of the oven

TheBigWangTheory · 01/02/2023 15:45

You dropped a biscuit in the oven, and you're "still shaking" and creating PSA's?

Quit the drama and get a hold of yourself. And maybe don't bake without supervision.

angela99999 · 01/02/2023 15:46

Personally I don't like these trays much because they're difficult to pick up but they're useful because they have a bigger surface area so can fit more biscuits. Luckily my oven came with a big tray that fits on the runners so I don't need to use the flat trays any longer.
