These flat baking trays are dangerous

This only happened in the last hour and I am still shaking. I decided to make some cookies and used a Lakeland baking tray I got as a Christmas present. It is flat, with one side raised for you to grip and seemed oversized and awkward for the oven shelf. Similar to the one below. Anyway, after ten minutes in the oven I decided to check on my biscuits and wasn't concentrating fully as I did so, causing about three of the biscuits to slide off the edge of the tray. One fell right into the flame of the gas oven and caught fire. I managed to turn the oven off and somehow (god knows how I didn't burn myself) swatted at the flame with a tea towel, it went out but then reignited. I managed to grab some tongs and get the bsicuit out of the oven. It was very scary and I feel awfully shook up. That baking tray has gone straight in the bin. Please beware of these edgeless trays, I don't think they are safe to make small goods on at all.

So, you tried to put out a flame with a flammable object?? So should we also ban tea towels and ovens? Or, perhaps, should you concentrate and employ some common sense.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/02/2023 14:15

Similarly does anybody actually try to smother a fire with an oven mit?

I probably would if I'm being honest Blush

WonderingWanda · 01/02/2023 14:16

I know it's not the point of the thread but if the cookie caught on fire that easily I would say it was done and time to turn the oven off!

Were you maybe already looking for an excuse to dislike the tray? Maybe you don't like the gift giver? Maybe you didn't think it a worthy gift?

1Wanda1 · 01/02/2023 14:20

Sometimes you need an edge-less tray, for when you need to be able to slide things off it.

You do have to be careful when you take them out of the oven though, to avoid things sliding off before you want them to.

2bazookas · 01/02/2023 14:21

OMG, do be careful on steps; you could so easily fall off the edge if you weren't paying attention.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 01/02/2023 14:21

I once stood on a swivel chair to get a chainsaw off a high shelf. The petition I started in the aftermath wasn’t well supported.

OzziePopPop · 01/02/2023 14:23

You weren’t concentrating = you fucked up = concentrate next time

Simple?

Togoodtobeforgotten · 01/02/2023 14:24

A bad workman always blames his tools, you even said yourself you weren't paying attention that's not the trays fault.

Oblomov22 · 01/02/2023 14:24

Nope. Not dangerous.

EmmaEmerald · 01/02/2023 14:24

Okay, so you've learned about baking sheets

now please don't try to put out fires at the back of the oven with a tea towel.

hope you're feeling okay now.

steff13 · 01/02/2023 14:24

As the other, I think you might be the one who are dangerous. I cannot imagine trying to smother a fire with a tea towel. You're lucky you didn't set your whole kitchen on fire.

gogohmm · 01/02/2023 14:25

I've been using that style and brand for years, it's fine, they are useful for foods you want to be able to slide off eg pizza

Neuronamechange · 01/02/2023 14:29

To be fair, Lakeland does describe the raised bit as a handle. The tray is designed for items to slide off easily.
You could fish it out of the bin and practice using it? As others have said, you may even find positioning the raised edge at the back easier. Removing anything from the oven without concentrating is the main issue.

Op won’t be back. She is probably writing a review on Lakeland now..

Dear god.

Cocobutt · 01/02/2023 14:31

Although I think it’s good to make others aware of potential hazards.

I do think the biggest lesson here is to making sure you are concentrating when using things like ovens, which can be a hazard if not used correctly.

mimbleandlittlemy · 01/02/2023 14:32

It seems a strangely appropriate time to offer OP a 🍪

Shopper727 · 01/02/2023 14:33

I’m just imagining her face on Christmas morning opening a baking tray?
I mean I think I’d have cried never mind tried to set kitchen on fire with a cookie, still not sure how you managed to knock them into the flame whilst checking on them? I just look and think
cooked - remove
not cooked - remain in oven
I don’t need to touch anything, perhaps sensible to pay attention when dealing with very hot things op or you could really hurt yourself.

Harebrain · 01/02/2023 14:33

I’ve been using those trays for years and have never had an issue. I don’t think they’re dangerous at all but it sounds like you need the more traditional, edged trays.

slowquickstep · 01/02/2023 14:33

Next time maybe you could concentrate whilst using a hot oven.

Bluekerfuffle · 01/02/2023 14:34

A sideless tray does seem a bit of a daft idea when trays with sides are perfectly adequate and a lot safer.

Flymetothetoon · 01/02/2023 14:36

Some of these replies are really cracking me up! MN is on fire 🔥 today 😂👏👏👏

EnjoythemoneyJane · 01/02/2023 14:37

And please fish the baking sheet out of the bin and give it to someone less prone to lapses of concentration & fire fighting with tea towels.

Why tf would you toss something brand new & perfectly serviceable into landfill because of your own ineptitude? I know you’ve frightened yourself and I’m sorry, but putting out an APB on a commonly used kitchen item is a bit 🙄.

Nah, I've got two of these flat trays and I love them. When you're dishing out the oven chips or biscuits or whatever you've cooked on them, you only need to slide them off the tray onto the plate or cooling rack, using a spatula.

If there are sides, you have to lift stuff up, right? Or tilt the tray right over to pour them out. Seems like more of a faff.
