These flat baking trays are dangerous

This only happened in the last hour and I am still shaking. I decided to make some cookies and used a Lakeland baking tray I got as a Christmas present. It is flat, with one side raised for you to grip and seemed oversized and awkward for the oven shelf. Similar to the one below. Anyway, after ten minutes in the oven I decided to check on my biscuits and wasn't concentrating fully as I did so, causing about three of the biscuits to slide off the edge of the tray. One fell right into the flame of the gas oven and caught fire. I managed to turn the oven off and somehow (god knows how I didn't burn myself) swatted at the flame with a tea towel, it went out but then reignited. I managed to grab some tongs and get the bsicuit out of the oven. It was very scary and I feel awfully shook up. That baking tray has gone straight in the bin. Please beware of these edgeless trays, I don't think they are safe to make small goods on at all.

The only reason I use edgeless trays like those is to put at the bottom of the oven to catch any drips / fallen food / crumbs from falling to the bottom and getting burnt on. Makes cleaning the oven much easier!

I might need to buy one for this reason!

Otherwise, don't understand why anyone would buy one without edges! I'm sure I'd end up with stuff falling off all the time!

jannier · 01/02/2023 13:58

The point of the flat tray is to be able to slide off items without them breaking especially large ones you can't use a slice for. Use the right tray and pay attention or you would burn yourself anyway.

LakeTiticaca · 01/02/2023 13:58

I hate these kind of baking trays . Had stuff slide off even when I'm concentrating!!

Ah, are you the reason I struggle to find flat baking sheets these days? They all have 1cm lips on, which make getting biscuits off them hard, as you can't get a fish slice underneath.

TightFistedWozerk · 01/02/2023 14:02

You've had a horrid fright, OP, I hope you're okay.

(you are a great raconteur, it'll be a terrific dinner party tale in years to come)

You need a pampered chef pizza stone, find on ebay; they are great for cookies and biscuits.

DRS1970 · 01/02/2023 14:04

You said you were not concentrating, how is that the fault of the tray!

Pinkpaw · 01/02/2023 14:05

Why on earth did you use a tea towel to put out the fire? The tray is fine, this is dangerous op. At least use your fire blanket, if you don’t just want to close the door.

It does have an edge! That goes at the back to stop stuff falling off 😂

op thought the back edge was a grip, which is why everything slid off when she picked it up!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/02/2023 14:06

It's a baking sheet and it is specifically designed so that you can slide food off it.

Not just after dinner speaking, Netflix may want to turn it into a film. 🤞

ouch321 · 01/02/2023 14:06

Accidents happen. I made a tarte Tatin the other day and used a loose bottomed flan dish.

Big mistake.

When I removed it from the oven I spilled hot caramel over my arm, the worktop and the floor.

But that was my fault for using a silly pan.

wlaksiabv · 01/02/2023 14:07

You'd better start a petition to get them banned OP, sending hugs, stay safe and keep strong Flowers

GreaterStickle · 01/02/2023 14:08

The tray isn’t the issue here. You being careless and not paying attention is.

This was entirely your fault and totally avoidable.

Overthebow · 01/02/2023 14:08

Not sure the fault lies with the tray.

wonkylegs · 01/02/2023 14:08

Surely if you're going to blame the equipment go for your gas oven with a naked flame 🔥
Electric fan ovens are better for baking anyway
Sometimes I think my teenager is crap at cooking and prone to over dramatise his efforts but then I hear stories like this and think actually he'll be fine.

purplecorkheart · 01/02/2023 13:25

Wouldn't closing the oven door and then turning off the gas got rid of the fire?

I thought so too. Am I in the wrong? I always assumed cutting off oxygen supply will do the trick 😁

GloomyDarkness · 01/02/2023 14:09

For future reference, turn the oven off and leave it closed to suffocate the fire. It’s much safer than trying to dislodge whatever is on fire because you risk injuring yourself or spreading the fire

This - also don't use water with pan fires you want to smother - either with lid on or with fire proof cloth.

I've used flat tins like that for cookies - sometime I use other tins instead but I've had no issues and they are good for items that need slipping off - though I am clumsy and thus very aware when cooking.

I hope you feel better soon.

whizzpopping · 01/02/2023 14:09

We have one like that which is used for loaves/baguettes. But yeah obviously you have to be careful when taking hot things out of the oven...

OK, I should have explicitly said "four edges". Edges plural! Unlike some pp, I've never had any issues getting biscuits off trays with four edges!

GatoradeMeBitch · 01/02/2023 14:12

Maybe get it out of the bin and give it a wash (obviously give it a wash). Baking sheets have their place. Like anything else you just need to keep an eye on what you're doing. You won't tip cookies into open fire again, will you? Lesson learned.

Girlgift97 · 01/02/2023 14:12

Cileymyrus · 01/02/2023 13:22

We’re you using it the wrong way round?

I would assume the raised edge goes at the back to stop stuff falling into the oven when you remove the tray.

i wouldn’t have thought it was a grip? That would mean you lift the tray and everything falls off the other side- as you discovered…..

Exactly, raised bit at the back.

canonlydoblue · 01/02/2023 14:13

I'm the most accident prone person I know and I can manage a flat baking sheet. Just concentrate next time you're near the oven. Or ask an adult to help....

palelavender · 01/02/2023 14:14

The idea of putting out an oven fire with a tea towel is one of the daftest things I've ever read on mumsnet. Cotton is extremely flammable despite being a natural fabric. At best you'll end up with a charred tea towel. Similarly does anybody actually try to smother a fire with an oven mit?
