Just woke up to this news this morning. It's just so incredibly heartbreaking for all involved. Seems to be happening so much more than ever these days

It is happening more. There are more dogs and more dogs being poorly trained/socialised. We also have the importing of rescue dogs with no real knowledge of their background and the tendency to re-home dogs after aggressive incidents.

Unbearably sad for the girl's family.

pissssedofff · 01/02/2023 06:39

Could have 1000 children killed by dogs and dog owners would not accept any form of restriction, licencing etc.

They are the NRA of the UK.

Yes, presumably it was another 'nanny dog'
Awful, awful.

singingsussie · 01/02/2023 06:44

It's just so incredibly sad. I can't imagine how it must feel for the dog owner knowing it was their 'beloved pet' that did this. What a horrendous death for the the child too!

Absolutely awful and sickening. There needs to be more policing and stricter laws. I am so sick of dog owners not taking responsibility for the pets. We don't all like dogs, they are not safe. My 11 year old son wants to walk home from school by himself (10 minutes).I don't feel comfortable with this as I have noticed an increase in XL bully's, staffs, begian shepards and pit bull looking dogs in our area. All of them with no muzzles. I would never forgive myself if my son was attacked and possibly killed by one of these horrible beasts. So sick of it now.

So so awful. Happens far too much now. There are way too many dogs in this country and many many horrendously bad owners.

This is so true! Our children have the right to feel safe. I was at the park on Sunday with my youngest and there was an absolutely enormous dog ( Irish wolfhound) literally standing at the gate, towering over the kids trying to sniff and lick them. I just find it irritating that owners just assume everyone loves their 'wee Toby' as much as they door.

I've also noticed a large portion of dogs running free off leads too. I don't think this helps people that have a nervous disposition around strange dogs.

Yes. NRA sounds right.

If I could I would have this law. (Except assistance dogs).

No dogs in restaurants.
No dogs in shops.
No dogs off lead in a public area unless a designated dog exercise area.
Compulsory dog training and licensing and assessment of home and person environment.
Ban breeding and selling of all bully and larger breeds (exception for true working dogs on farms, estates and for police force).

We have this for guns but not dogs.

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 yeah all great ideas. I would also ban the general public from owning working breeds. We don’t need to own German Shepard’s/husky’s for example as family pets.

Roselilly36 · 01/02/2023 07:22

Poor little girl, I was so sad to read of this, just heartbreaking that another person has been killed by a dog. Every few days there seems to be yet another article in the news. When will people learn.

Saltovinegar · 01/02/2023 07:30

Went for a walk recently and was shocked at the amount of dogs running loose, how can people with 2 or more dogs running around control them if anything happens? We had to pass dogs squaring up to each other with feckless owners nowhere near.

I've nothing against dogs but the sheer volume of them these days means a nice walk through the park is no longer enjoyable. There's nothing worse than two border collies running towards you and you're thinking what do I do. I really don't care if the owner tells me they're friendly, keep them on their bloody leads.

You really need to examine your priorities.

DarkForces · 01/02/2023 07:57

You need to stand for election on this platform instead of starting the billionth thread on evil dawgs

I hope they feel shame and revulsion. No sympathy for them.

The other thread on this has just been pulled for some weird reason.

You mentioned the child almost as an afterthought.

Who cares about the dog owner or the dog? Hopefully he’ll go to prison and the dog will be shot.

Wibblewibble1 · 01/02/2023 08:32

These are not lovely family pets, that it the problem. People are getting breeds that are capable of maiming and killing , rather than a Labrador, so these dogs are meant to be fierce and give stupid people “street cred”. You should have to apply to have a dog licence and the you can vet out the dog breeds and the psychos who own them. It has to be regulated. Dogs without a licence are taken away.

Dymaxion · 01/02/2023 08:36

I let my dog off lead on walks, however if I see people who don't have a dog or have a dog on a lead, she gets put back on the lead until we have passed them. It only takes a few minutes and everyone gets to enjoy their walk.

Labs and Spaniels are ‘working breeds’. I can’t recall the last attack I heard of regarding a lab or spaniel. I don’t think the problem is working breeds. As a general rule, it’s bull breeds.

The vast majority of these attacks happen at home so the majority of those rules wouldn’t prevent them.

I agree that some places would be more pleasant if dogs weren’t allowed or not allowed off lead but that’s nothing to do with attacks.

I would support the compulsory training, licensing and vetting, especially for large powerful breeds but many of the people who want that sort of dog would be the type to circumvent any laws anyway.

I would also support a manslaughter charge for the owner of a dog who kills someone.

On average one child a week is killed by a parent in the UK and we don’t hear about all of them. A dog killing a child is a rare tragedy (albeit seemingly less rare than it was in the past).

Nw22 · 01/02/2023 08:47

@FrancescaContini you can be upset about the child but care more about your own dog. I care more about my dog than any random child.

We’re not talking about your dog.
We’re talking about a ‘random’ dog who killed a child. Surely random child ranks above random dog in your care priorities?

I love my dog to bits but I can guarantee that if, god forbid, it hurt someone I would be more concerned about the person than the dog. That’s why normal, sensible people take steps to make sure their dogs are safe around people.
