What's happening in your house tomorrow with the the teacher strikes?

It seems the strikes are affecting all of us in different ways as not every school will be closed. Dd8's teacher is striking but ds6's is not (same school). Ive decided to keep ds off as he has sen and will ruin everyone's day if he has to go in but his sister doesn't. We're off to soft play tomorrow. I've had to juggle all my clients around to fit them in during the week. How is everyone else coping?

Oldest daughter’s class at special school is closed (and I’m v grateful to her teachers for giving advance notice that they will be striking) so she’ll come with me to drop off her siblings at different schools, whose schools are open but will likely have to bunch some classes together.

Oldest DD will be a little unsettled as she’s usually picked up by taxi and the first to leave the house, so the morning will be very different for her. But I’m going to make it up to her with a special day of rare 1:1 with me, and all her favourite activities. Fortunately I’m home on a Wednesday anyway, so relatively little disruption to us.

Despite the inconvenience/potential disruption to us, I support the teachers’ requests and their right to strike, and have no problem rearranging myself for the odd day for that to happen, even though one of my children will find it harder than most to cope with.

Just trying to remember if Royal Mail sent me an apology when DDs birthday cards were late last year 🤔
No, I can't recall that they did...

Rodentsrock · 31/01/2023 21:27

@breatheinskipthegym I hope your daughter is able to settle tomorrow and you have a nice day together 🙂

I’ve had to take the morning as unpaid leave to look after my 2 primary aged children, DH is a farmer and is too busy with spring planting to take time off. Thankfully mum is able to have them in the afternoon so I can make an important client meeting which has been in the diary since November. I will try to use the morning to meeting prep whilst baking/crafting..!

DinosApple · 31/01/2023 21:32

My DC are yr 7 & yr 9 so at home alone tomorrow, hopefully on Chromebooks doing online learning. I'm at work, DH is at work. Neither of us can WFH.

I'm a TA in primary, as far as I know I won't have year 1 on my own, but I've not heard anything.
Fully support the strikes though.

elliejjtiny · 31/01/2023 21:32

Primary school is fully open and secondary school is open for years 7 and 10 so all my dc will be going to school. Thank goodness as we are living with in-laws and have no car so I really need the dc to be at school at the moment.

DelilahBucket · 31/01/2023 21:34

DS14 has online learning so he's going to do his best. He's lost enough learning time over the last three years, and it's really showing now he's going into his GCSEs. I'll be going to work but will be home for lunch and to drag him for a walk round the block.

Simulacra · 31/01/2023 21:39

Teen DDs are staying aying home and working online whilst I’m at work as primary aged DDs school aren’t striking, meaning I didn’t have to scrabble for childcare or WFH.

Colourinsidethelines · 31/01/2023 21:42

Just my eldest off tomorrow, the other two are in as normal. He has asked for pancakes for breakfast so we’ll do that once the twins are in. Then he will probably want some xbox time! I work at home freelance so have managed to do plenty yesterday and today so tomorrow can be free bar answering any emails.

HelenaJustina · 31/01/2023 21:45

DC1-3 secondary are all off, DH is wfh but they are old enough to look after themselves. They won’t have work set but are expected to clear all outstanding homework they are sensible so will do so, also I’ll be checking DC4’s teacher (primary) isn’t striking so is in as usual. The school are 50% in 50% out. I’m school support staff so working as usual.

Veryactivenymphomaniac · 31/01/2023 21:46

Year 10 daughter is off, I work from home. So we're having a lie in.

Moonflower12 · 31/01/2023 21:59

DD's school is closed so she is coming to school with me. I'm at an independent school so we're open.

I fully support the teachers who are striking.

IdidntshagHarry · 31/01/2023 22:00

Year 11 child still in.

The school have said they will also have looked after children in (why they have carers at home) and some children with SEND - get that they need routine.

So normal day here. Good luck for those that have to take a day off paid (holiday) or unpaid to cover a day that they thought children would be educated. They have missed so much education but can see that teachers want more money as do rail workers, ambulance drivers, nurses, postal workers, Amazon staff, and uncle Tom Cobbly and all.

Bakeoffcanbuggeroff · 31/01/2023 22:06

Year 11s have been told to show up with revision materials so my DS is going in. Y7s are also going in but Y8-10 have a mixture of Teams calls, set work and open ended study. Fortunately my DH is a (50+) sahd so can support. I’ll be working as usual.

The Treasury has taken an extra £12bn according to the OBR the government could fund wage agreements out of that rather than existing school budgets.

popandchoc · 31/01/2023 22:10

DD2 who is 7 is one of 4 classes at her school going in.
DD1 who is 11 and in year 7 is off and will have some work set and also might have a zoom call for ones lesson. She should just get on with it so isn't an issue.
I usually work at home on a Wednesday anyway and there's a train strike.

breatheinskipthegym · 31/01/2023 22:41

Ah, thanks so much @Rodentsrock

DoesItMakeYouFeelBetter · 31/01/2023 22:42

I’m striking, so I will be going to a demo. DP has taken the day off work to come with me. DS’s school is open, but we are not sending him in. He’ll be with us.

Heatherjayne1972 · 31/01/2023 22:56

I’m going to work at 7.30am I can’t work from home
the teenagers may or may not get up before 11am. They might do the online learning that school have ‘suggested’ or they might play Xbox all day
its 50/50

unfortunately I won’t be there to supervise

listsandbudgets · 01/02/2023 06:29

DDs school shut. She's going to spend day looking after a couple of local primary school children ( at a very reasonable price if £25 8 to 4.30) so their parents can work

DS in school
