What's happening in your house tomorrow with the the teacher strikes?

It seems the strikes are affecting all of us in different ways as not every school will be closed. Dd8's teacher is striking but ds6's is not (same school). Ive decided to keep ds off as he has sen and will ruin everyone's day if he has to go in but his sister doesn't. We're off to soft play tomorrow. I've had to juggle all my clients around to fit them in during the week. How is everyone else coping?

Going to school as usual. School is apparently confident there’s enough staff to be open, but children may not have their usual teacher. I suspect some classes are being covered by HLTAs and the HT.

SmileWithADimple · 31/01/2023 18:59

My DC's secondary school is closed. They're old enough to be home alone, but actually DH is wfh (and would be anyway).

DelurkingAJ · 31/01/2023 18:59

DS1 is in (Junior school so I guess ratios less of an issue). DS2 is home and will have to behave sensibly whilst I WFH. Luckily my boss is fab and knows that I’ll catch up (given this week at work I’ve probably already done an extra day already so…)

TheOrigRights · 31/01/2023 19:04

Year 9 DS is off with no work set, so he might go and play football with mates.

I am working. I thought it might be a good day to take off but I have 3 meetings as well as a wheelchair assessment for my boys' grandad.

The current year 9s missed most of yr6, had a crappy yr7. Yr 8 was better but no attempt to make up for the missed things and when school has closed or been low on staff we get all the emails about how yr11 and 13 are most important (true but still).
He's 13 and ambivalent about school and quite honestly I can't blame him.
The government won't change much before he finishes compulsory education but at least he will get some priority over the poor resources once he gets to "the important years".

nb I realise covid wasn't the governments fault at least I don't think so

TheOrigRights · 31/01/2023 19:04

I fully support the strikes BTW.

Butternutissquashed · 31/01/2023 19:06

Both teachers here - not striking as with NASUWT. Both DC off school as theirs are closed.

isittheholidaysyet · 31/01/2023 19:08

Yr13 child. Have been told that sixth form have to be in.

however was told last Wednesday that one of his teachers had set work for this Wednesday's lesson, just in case she "didnt make it" for some reason.

Veryfaraway · 31/01/2023 19:13

Schools in my area of Scotland were off today, I had a day off anyway so my dsis (teacher) came to visit with her kids.

berksandbeyond · 31/01/2023 19:15

Some classes are closed, some are open, won’t have final confirmation til the morning.
I work from home so am hoping DD will be going in or it’ll be a pain to juggle

AhhSlippedOnMahBeansRitaaa · 31/01/2023 19:18

DD was excited to have a day at home tomorrow while her sibling is in school.
Today she was sent home by morning and has been throwing up ever since. Yay

Shergill15 · 31/01/2023 19:20

DD's class is open although some in her school aren't. I'll be on a training course with work so normal day here. Don't know if this will be the case for other strike days so am not booking any appointments/meetings in case I have to take leave/wfh

Nothing set from school, no apology for disruption, school doesn't give a shit. But luckily I do, and can, give them home lessons.

Striking teachers can't see work, I'm not sure why you think there would be work? Unless a high number of NASUWT staff. An apology for disruption 😂

Amethystanddiamonds · 31/01/2023 19:27

DH is a teacher. DC will be at home with him. I have a very full on day in the NHS trying to cram in as much stuff as possible before next week's strikes.

bumblebeemumma · 31/01/2023 19:30

Years 7, 11, 12 and 13 are being accommodated in school. Any timetabled lessons that can't go ahead because of the teacher being on strike will be spent doing online/independent study/revision.

All other years (8, 9 and 10 to remain at home and log into their school account to check if any work has been set by their teachers.

I have one going to school (year 7) and one staying at home (year 10) but luckily I'm on mat leave so not having to take a day off although she's at an age where she can be trusted to spend a few hours at home alone anyway.

Beachhutnut · 31/01/2023 19:32

One in one off. I am taking a days leave and will have a shopping day (she needs stuff and we never go).

It would be nice if there was an apology for disruption, as it’s not the children nor the working parents fault that teachers don’t get a bigger pay rise, but it is them who are suffering from the strikes

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 31/01/2023 19:43

DD school (secondary academy) is striking. 3 year groups closed including her unless you are in the academy performance which starts tomorrow night. She is in it so has to go to rehearsals all day which she is gutted about 😂😂😂

SuperFi · 31/01/2023 19:43

I will be trying to work at home in between looking after my ASD teen and trying to explain that he cannot use the Teacher strike as a reason/ excuse for further school refusal.🙄

KickHimInTheCrotch · 31/01/2023 19:44

DS (primary) going to school as usual. I have rearranged a few things so I can wfh while DD (secondary) entertains herself online or she might meet up with friends.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 31/01/2023 19:45

The kids who aren't going in tomorrow have had online work set for each lesson so shouldn't really be any detriment to them.

RudsyFarmer · 31/01/2023 19:46

Nothing is happening at all. School will be open, my kids will be there, I’ll be working. Standard day for us.

SoManyCreepyBears · 31/01/2023 19:48

Teacher here. I am losing a day’s pay tomorrow. I already do enough unpaid work so will not be setting work for my class tomorrow.

I do give a shit though. I care deeply. This is why I am striking.

Volunteer to spend a week in a primary school and see if you feel differently.

Ours all have extra work allocated to do if they want to. No reason why secondary aged kids and older primary can't do an hour or so of independent learning.
