Is your school shut tomorrow?

This is absolutely not intended to start another slanging match about the teachers strike - but I'm just curious to know how many of you have been told your children's schools are completely shut tomorrow? We had a note late last week to say ours had taken the decision to close entirely; but I haven't heard of this happening in any other schools, every other school in the area is (I guess) seeing how it goes tomorrow morning/has chosen to close specific classes only.

For context it's a single intake primary.

I'm just wondering if total closures are happening elsewhere?

I was told last week that y7-10/12 would not be in. They were hoping to have y11 in but we have been told that's not happening. So the only possible year could be y13.

I do get the impression from the emails though that the school will be open for selected children - those with additional support etc.

Topbird29 · 31/01/2023 15:34

In our junior school only 1 class is in - out of 4 years - 2 classes per year. Not sure about the infant side though. Found out Friday on email.

Iwantabloodypizza · 31/01/2023 15:36

We got a message this morning (primary) saying teachers are striking, but children must come to
school.

So, a day of doing fuck all with TAs running themselves ragged. Which is what goes on most days, honesty. it’s a shit, failing school (as they all are where I live).

My DCs secondary announced last week they would be closed but they have set work for them to do online

Iwantabloodypizza · 31/01/2023 15:40

Also a bit about how teachers may form a picket line at the gates, but parents must not join in, or abuse them. there will also be a police presence to ensure this. I can’t tell you how much of a hell hole I live in, parents scrap in the playground weekly, someone will kick off just because they can for a laugh.

I think the school are crazy for opening, but the head was brought in as a “saviour” a few months ago, from a very nice area. He has no idea what it’s like to live here and how people behave.

Those police will be busy.

Secondary school closed. I know several local primaries are closed. All have said they've got a large number of NEU members so won't have staff to open. My DC's school is open but it's a special school so has a lot of non striking support staff. I'm not sure how many of the teaching staff there will be NEU.

BetiYeti · 31/01/2023 15:44

Partial closure for my DC’s primary tomorrow. My DC are off.

Same here.

My youngest's SEN school (y1- adulthood) is only closing for the 4 youngest classes. Which are all year 1.

SpinningFloppa · 31/01/2023 15:47

Ours is closed apart from 2 classes don’t know what the point of that is, so I have to drag 4 children with me on the school run for only one child to go in! Feel like keeping her off

Begonias · 31/01/2023 15:47

Primary school is open as usual.
Local comp is fully closed.
Grammar school is open to year 7-10, year 11-13 have been told to come in if they have exams other wise they can stay home.

Both secondary schools have set work online for older 2.

hryllilegur · 31/01/2023 15:49

Partial closure here: Y11-13 are in; everyone else is staying at home. Apparently there will be online work from teachers who aren’t striking.

Seems a fair enough decision to me. DS is hoping all his teachers are striking so there will be no work at all.

PuttingDownRoots · 31/01/2023 15:49

Yr7-10 off at DD1s secondary school. They need to check Google classroom.

Primary school is fully open but apparently not all teachers will be there but safety won't be compromised.

I'm taking DD tomorrow, she normally walks by herself. I want to assess the situation. I thought TAs and other Union teachers weren't supposed to be covering for striking teachers?

Ricco12 · 31/01/2023 15:50

Ours was closed Yesterday for strikes.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 31/01/2023 15:51

Primary is open, SEN school is open, secondary is closed to all years except 11 as they have mocks this week.

FourTeaFallOut · 31/01/2023 15:51

My primary dc's school is open and the classes are expected to run as normal, most teachers are either not unionised or not members of striking unions.

There will be more disruption at my secondary dc's school. Y7 and y11s are in, as are vulnerable kids and the remainder will do online learning. It's a sensible compromise. I'd be amazed if there is a picket line at the gates.

Sirzy · 31/01/2023 15:51

Ds secondary and the primary I work in are both shut to all but vulnerable pupils

Spotsstripes · 31/01/2023 15:51

Dcs large secondary fully shut we were notified last week. They also said we should prepare for school to be closed for the other days too. No work set as most are striking and have been asked to do any outstanding homework/revision etc. Free school meal dc have been sent tesco vouchers which the school do in most school holidays (when they can afford it). I support the strikes and feel the school have done the best by staff, dc and parents they can in a difficult situation.

Oopswediditagain2023 · 31/01/2023 15:55

Yeah our primary is closed tomorrow

edwinbear · 31/01/2023 15:56

Ours is open as usual, we had an e mail from the HT on Friday. It's private, but they did strike over their pensions a couple of years ago so I'm a bit surprised. Presumably they've had an acceptable pay rise, which is obviously a good thing.

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 31/01/2023 15:56

Ours is open as usual. Surpised really

Changes17 · 31/01/2023 15:57

My kids are at two different secondaries. One is closing completely for safety reasons, the other will have year 11 only in.

louise5754 · 31/01/2023 15:57

Dd10 is off. Some classes are open some aren't.

Dd12 is off all classes are closed apart from Y7 and Y11.

All kids with SEN can go and all those with free school meals.

scrivette · 31/01/2023 15:57

Primary is closed. Secondary is open to some years and work is being set (by non striking teachers) for the years that have to stay at home.

GoChasingWaterfalls · 31/01/2023 15:58

Primary, two form entry. All in apart from two year groups.

However lots of schools in our area are shut completely (I work for the LA and we've had alerts about them).

AnotherPigeon · 31/01/2023 15:59

I'm not expecting there to be picket lines at our schools tomorrow as I think there's a central demonstration going on.
