Is your school shut tomorrow?

This is absolutely not intended to start another slanging match about the teachers strike - but I'm just curious to know how many of you have been told your children's schools are completely shut tomorrow? We had a note late last week to say ours had taken the decision to close entirely; but I haven't heard of this happening in any other schools, every other school in the area is (I guess) seeing how it goes tomorrow morning/has chosen to close specific classes only.

For context it's a single intake primary.

I'm just wondering if total closures are happening elsewhere?

DGD in reception. Apparently my DD will get a text at 7.00 a.m. to say if school closed or not. We are going up to help anyway just in case ( do childcare for DGS (2) 2 days a week so have just swapped days).

Rodentsrock · 31/01/2023 17:49

DD class not in, mine is. We are both at the same school. Half of the classes closed but all children welcome to come in.

mixedrecycling · 31/01/2023 17:50

School (secondary, in London) closed for most pupils with no work set. I got an email as DD has an EHCP saying that she could go in if I felt it would be best for her, and there would be non-academic activities provided (DD happy to hang out with a friend instead).

Friend next door (different secondary, same Borough) closed for most pupils, but she is a key worker so her DD could go in if necessary. Optional work set. Her DD also happy to entertain herself for the day.

Primary & secondary fully closed here. No online work set either. Told to prepare for full closures on other 3 days too

CeeJay81 · 31/01/2023 17:50

Nope, school as normal. Powys Wales.

DinosApple · 31/01/2023 17:51

School I work in is open. I am assuming the teachers I work with will turn up, I'll be busy if not!
Secondary school my DC attend is shut with online learning.

BettyOBarley · 31/01/2023 17:55

Our junior school is closed for Yr4 only (my DC's year), all the rest are in.
Not sure if that means it will be Yr4 again if the other 3 days to ahead, or whether they will move things around...

whatsagoodusername · 31/01/2023 17:57

Secondary open for years 11, 13 and for vulnerable/key worker children.

At home, live online lessons from teachers who are not striking and a local history project for DS's year for when they don't have a teacher. I'm not sure what other years are doing, but I assume a similar project.

Rodentsrock · 31/01/2023 17:58

@BettyOBarley it'll be the same teachers striking.

Picklypickles · 31/01/2023 18:02

We wont know what's happening until 7am tomorrow morning at our school, they aren't closing I don't think but some classes may have to stay at home if their teacher is striking. I don't know why they can't let us know until then, surely they know if they'll be there are not by now!

DuchessOfDisco · 31/01/2023 18:09

Primary is fully open though likely to not be following the national curriculum for the day.
secondary is only open to exam years (11&13), vulnerable, and they are also opening the canteen at lunchtime so all students (though specifically those on free school meals) can come in for lunch

The unions are advising their members NOT to confirm if they are striking or not. Schools can ask the teachers if they will be striking but can’t insist on knowing.

Oh yes I know, I just wasn't sure if they would move teaching staff around so it's not just one year group who lose nearly a week of school time, but each of the year groups miss 1 day for example. Although someone did tell me they aren't supposed to cover the work of striking teachers? I'm not sure how it all works.

It'll be interesting to see how many striking teachers support the union tactic for maximum disruption. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 31/01/2023 17:14

It's not a pandemic.

Reception and KS1 also have ratios and max class sizes. Maybe they don't have enough staff for safety reasons. Maybe some staff have said they won't cover for striking staff.

I appreciate it's not a pandemic 🙄

Just wondering why school were prioritising certain years.

GloomyDarkness · 31/01/2023 18:22

That's why DC school is closing they don;t know who will be coming in or not so can't be sure if they have enough staff to stay open safely.

Apparently DS Y11 has been told there might be work on teams for some lesons- which will depend on if his teachers are in another union - which some are - or not striking.

Rodentsrock · 31/01/2023 18:25

**@BettyOBarley no, sadly not. So my DD will be off on all strike days, and I think the teachers will strike if more are planned.
We are not supposed to cover our colleagues who are striking.

CactusFlowers · 31/01/2023 18:27

Local secondary closed to most students, not sure about the primaries.

I think that's why our school, although open, are saying that not all classes will be doing the national curriculum. It seems quite well organised to be honest. The headteacher knows which teachers are striking and they're calling it an 'enrichment day' so a day of outdoor learning, forest school, music, PE and art.

My year 2 says their TA (and "someone else") is taking them for registration, then they have forest school in the morning with the forest school leader and PE in the afternoon with one of the sports coaches.

She said their teacher said he's striking because "the school can't afford a new whiteboard"...

Gymtok · 31/01/2023 18:30

No ds high school is open as normal.

Maestro12 · 31/01/2023 18:32

Year 6 and reception are in but being taught by TAs. Everyone else not in ( so I have one in one not). A parent did ask what was the thinking behind this but head didn’t have an answer!

Im not sure what the point is tbh - although I guess it helps parents who only have one child and in one of the years in with being able to go to work themselves. But can’t imagine the kids will learn so question why the head thought it worth breaking the strike and asking. TAs to cover for just two years.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 31/01/2023 18:34

Is your school shut the OP asks - we'll no, I don't go to school, although I appreciate pointing this out makes me a massive pedant
my DD's school is open tomorrow - although was shut by strike action today
We are in Scotland though, not England, and have now had, I think, five days of closures, although it might be four
all parents I know are supportive of teachers - just wish the Scottish Govt/councils would do a bit more
SG have done a lot to prevent NHS strikes, and they stepped in when striking council workers resulted in mounds of rubbish in Edinburgh last summer, but they just don't seem to be v proactive in trying to resolve this

TempsPerdu · 31/01/2023 18:37

DD’s school (London primary) is fully closed.

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 31/01/2023 18:38

I guess this could change quite quickly if the staff who were going in (TAs and non striking teachers) suddenly find themselves having to stay off and look after their own children whose schools suddenly close...

Scooby5kids · 31/01/2023 18:48

My DS in yr 7 is in school but my DD in yr 9 is at home. My primary school kids are unaffected
