Is your school shut tomorrow?

This is absolutely not intended to start another slanging match about the teachers strike - but I'm just curious to know how many of you have been told your children's schools are completely shut tomorrow? We had a note late last week to say ours had taken the decision to close entirely; but I haven't heard of this happening in any other schools, every other school in the area is (I guess) seeing how it goes tomorrow morning/has chosen to close specific classes only.

For context it's a single intake primary.

I'm just wondering if total closures are happening elsewhere?

Yep. Both juniors and secondary

The unions are advising their members NOT to confirm if they are striking or not. Schools can ask the teachers if they will be striking but can’t insist on knowing.

I've not had advise like that from the NEU.
Unless you are trying to misrepresent that unions are correct in telling members that they don't have to tell the school that they are striking if they don't want to.

DS’s state grammar is closed to all but year 11, 13, vulnerable children, FSM and boarders. They’ve said there “might” be work set on Teams but he’s not waiting around to see so DH is taking him to Chill Factor instead.

The SEN school I teach in is open as usual tomorrow because most of us belong to different unions (not the NEU).

DH's secondary school is only open to Y11+ because they know there are lots of NEU members and can't guarantee there will be enough staff for all year groups. They don't cover sixth form classes if teachers are absent and will use the regular cover supervisors if any Y11 class has a striking teacher.

Our DCs' school is open to Y11 only, plus children who don't have anywhere safe to be during the day. However, two of the younger year groups are returning from/going on a two day residential tomorrow and the NEU teachers going have generously prioritised those trips over the strike because they feel the students have missed out on so many opportunities since the pandemic.

Will be taking DD picketing with me!

How irresponsible

Worried2222 · 01/02/2023 05:57

Yes, my dd’s school is shut.

As is the school where I work (to all pupils apart from the children of key workers).

Am intending to get to school before the picket line forms (in any case I am admin and not a member of the NEU).

Worried2222 · 01/02/2023 05:59

(Both are secondary schools)

RobinRobinMouse · 01/02/2023 06:12

None of the schools around here seem to be striking, which I think is a shame as I do believe something needs to be done to improve things for children and staff in schools.

Morph22010 · 01/02/2023 06:12

Special school been told we can go in but there may be some changes to staffing

EsmeeMerlin · 01/02/2023 06:18

Partial closure at my son's school with the majority of classes off. Ds2 is one of the few classes in so he will be going to breakfast club and attending as normal. Ds1 has to come to work with me in a different school which is only open to vulnerable children. The rest are off. All TAs and other non teaching members of staff will be in alongside 5 teachers.

MinnieMountain · 01/02/2023 06:24

Just DS’s class in his junior school is shut.

daisybrown37 · 01/02/2023 06:25

Primary closed, apart from those with EHCP and vulnerable. We were offered a place for our son, but declined.

secondary - exam years and vulnerable only. Our eldest also has a EHCP but did not hear anything about him attending, so he is off

TenoringBehind · 01/02/2023 06:36

No, almost all the teachers are in the other union.

How irresponsible

Why @SchoolTripDrama? She isn’t at school and I want her to see what her mum, and her teachers (and other striking workers … there’s a mass walk in our town) are campaigning for.

I think that’s the most responsible thing a parents can do - I’m protesting for her educational future. I’m also raising my children to not be apathetic.

Monkeybutt1 · 01/02/2023 07:39

Primary school here closed but the other one in the village is open. 3 of the teachers at the open one have children in the closed one so that's caused a headache for them.
I'm lucky to get a lot of annual leave so have taken the day off and will have a lovely day with ds at the local wildlife park.
I feel for all parents who are not as lucky and are having to take time off unpaid etc.
