I can tell you now, they will have thought long and hard about who this will appeal to and why.

Like a cyclist needs to be 'warned' of the presence of a hulking great SUV.

One for the RageRovers among us.

@onefinemess I happen to agree, roads are not always safe for cycling but why is that?

We need to reduce pollution, congestion and address the many health issues we have, cycling, walking & running are the answers, the car is not.

If we want to make cycling and walking etc safer for all, then we need to get drivers, via better training, education and deterrent punishments to look out for other road users.

BarbieBunches · 17/07/2023 09:01

@onefinemess a dedicated off road bike track??? Oh yes there’s simply hundreds of those round here 🤦‍♀️

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 17/07/2023 09:03

SUVs are eight times more likely to result in pedestrian or cyclist death than standard cars.
SUVs should not be on the roads.

Er, people are allowed in car parks. Are you some sort of civilian emergency vehicle? Slow down, wait for people and learn the art of patience.

Maybe because electric cars are silent, especially so when you are creeping at slow speed?

I don't have this issue as my car is 8 years old petrol, so you can hear the engine ticking over.

BarbieBunches · 17/07/2023 09:00

@onefinemess so all the cyclists need to buy a car and add to the traffic? Your point is moronic and cyclists are never going to be banned so it might help to think about better solutions - like cracking down on shit drivers.

No, if you read my post you would understand.

With efficient public transport, there should no need for anyone to cycle anywhere. It's dangerous, people need to put their ego in check and realise that their selfish actions are putting themselves and others in unnecessary danger.

I like to ride a jet ski and do archery, I have to pay to find a safe place to do both of those. Why are cyclists so special that they believe they should be allowed to interfere with others just to do their hobby?

Agree, its all these selfish egotistical car drivers putting us all at risk, not least with air pollution, cars really don't belong on the roads, its too dangerous for everyone else.

GCWorkNightmare · 17/07/2023 09:07

Going against the grain here, but bicycles and pedestrians really shouldn't be on the road. In the same way we don't let people cycle or walk down train tracks or wander around the fast inside lane on the M25.

I get that people think they should be allowed to cycle down a main road, and 100 years ago it really was a legitimate mode of getting from A to B, but that's no longer appropriate.

There's no reason why a bus couldn't be used for those journeys instead. Cycle lanes don't work because they just dump the riders back out into traffic at random points. They are dangerous.

Roads are not safe places to mess around on bikes.

The "cyclist horn" is a bit of a gimmic I think, a talking point to get something in the media for a bit of free, viral advertising.

WTF?!

What makes you think all journeys are functional?

DH cycled Land’s End to John O’Groats raising over £30k for charity a couple of years back. Not quite the same test if endurance on a train.

SUVs should not be on the roads.

And if those pedestrians or cyclists weren't on the road to begin with, they wouldn't have been killed.

People arw dying because of ego.

DizzyRascal · 17/07/2023 09:08

Agree, SUVs are totally unnecessary and should only be allowed on dedicated SUV only lanes, separate from normal traffic, for the safety of everyone. Especially as most people who drive them seem to have passed a different driving test than the rest of us....
I love cycling - am very much a pootler not an A road user- and pray for a government that takes cycling seriously as a sustainable mode of transport, installing proper cycle paths everywhere like what they have in Netherlands.

As a driver of a fully electric car, getting stuck behind dawdling pedestrians walking down the middle of a car park is a regular occurrence.
It's rude (and frightening) to beep them but I've worked out the solution is to open the window and turn the radio up!

That's the reason electric vehicles should have some sort of fake engine noise by law rather than the ridiculous milk float type whine they have now.

BarbieBunches · 17/07/2023 09:09

@onefinemess why is cycling to work anything to do with my ego?! You’re a little cerebrally challenged I think. I’m off for a bike ride.

As for bus journeys, you’re absolutely deluded. Unless you’re in a major city already, it takes forever to get anywhere on public transport.

But it isn't a form of transport.

You could just take a bus. Safety and more efficient. You're making the choice to put yourself in danger and then complaining about the danger.

@onefinemess

say what?

do you live in London?

im not 'messing around on the road' anymore than you are!

most of us don't live somewhere where a bus arrives every 3 minutes!
where I live there's a regular bus (many don't even have that!! It runs east-west. Most things I need are north-south. This means a longer journey into a town going East, to get another bus going north (and often more changes to get where I actually need to be)It takes longer on the bus to get to the east point to change than it takes me to cycle where I want to go (so before I've done all the additional changes to get to where I need to be)

additionally, I like to cycle.

when I take the car, sometimes there are a lot of cyclists & it makes my journey longer & because I'm human I sometimes grumble to myself, but I never think they shouldn't be there.

where I live is quite hilly and lots of twisty roads. I won't over take them until it's safe, sadly not everyone feels the same.

It's an article/advert from 2 years ago, I wonder how their tests went.

AlligatorPsychopath · 17/07/2023 09:12

If there is anything cities need, it's more people cycling. It's a semi-desperate imperative. There isn't the space, and there isn't the air quality, for private cars to be a default mode. Legislation and infrastructure is all going to go in the direction of supporting self-powered or public transport because it literally has no other alternative.

Every cyclist on the road in the city is doing the people around them a favour. They're reducing congestion. They're improving air quality. They're reducing the overall level of traffic risk. And not incidentally, they're improving their own health and fitness and thus reducing their healthcare costs that the population needs to bear.

TheSeaDoesntKnowMyName · 17/07/2023 09:12

watchfulwishes · 28/01/2023 15:29

Or you could just wait for a minute, assuming you are not a surgeon on call of course.

Why should they "wait a minute"? A car park is a shared space, and while a pedestrian rightly has priority, they should be aware that cars are also there and would like to get out/parked

Everyone's time is equally important

Alexandra2001 · 17/07/2023 09:13

onefinemess · 17/07/2023 09:09

Your argument would make sense if cars weren't so useful and safer for people to travel in.

Society has moved on from cycling.

Safer???? 1800 people are killed due to car drivers (inc 300 children) and air pollution from vehicles kills 10s of '000s each and every year... plus congestion adds to the UKs productivity and lack of growth problems.

Cycling is one of the few things to have boomed in recent years, esp with women, usually a tough group to get involved in sport/exercise.

BlueRabbitYellow · 17/07/2023 09:14

All cars, lorries, vans should have a maximum speed limiter of 20mph. Motorway travel can be at 70mph BUT should be in driverless mode only.

Silent electric cars should make an easily recognised sound when moving. In addition, SUVs must play annoying tunes when moving. Bluey theme tune springs to mind.

onefinemess · 17/07/2023 09:14

Whataretheodds · 17/07/2023 09:10

I think you'll find it's cars that aren't appropriate. If there weren't cars on the road and it were just buses and bikes we'd all be better off.

And you could transport food and fuel on a bicycle could you?

Your local supermarket could get 40 ton of produce delivered on a ebike could it?

Emergency services could get to people on bicycles?

Fire fighters could just cycle with their hoses wrapped around their shoulders?

And as for cars, they are safer, have more utility and are more efficient than a bicycle.

AlligatorPsychopath · 17/07/2023 09:15

I'd just ignore @onefinemess because either they're trolling or they're so entirely deluded that there's no point engaging.

Abra1t · 17/07/2023 09:16

The roads were made for horses and horse-drawn carriages, then cycles, and then motor cars. That, I believe, was the order.

Cars are the later arrivals.

I agree, though, that some cyclists engage in bizarre and dangerous behaviour.
