Every Saturday morning. Catch the bus into town. Get my fruit & veg from the indoor market & get breakfast in the market caff. Bacon, sausage, egg, beans, mushrooms, tinned tomatoes & fried bread. Cheap & tasty.

I used to go the same with my parents as a child. Fruit and veg and a mooch around the huge indoor market (they sold everything from clothes to pet stuff), and then we’d go to the cafe in it and I would always have sausages and chips with gravy. One of my favourite childhood memories.

Haven’t been to a greasy spoon for years but I go to a café with a friend about twice a month. We like to vary where we go as much as possible but she’s gluten intolerant so it’s dependent on what they provide.

Funnily enough I'm just back from Brockwell Park, where I nipped into the cafe at the Hall for a cup of PG Tips and a Snickers. It struck me then, having read the Guardian article, that it was surprising how ungentrified it was, given the surroundings. It's a lovely Italian run place, with enormous bottles of red, brown and yellow sauce, serving an huge range of clientele and most definitely a caff in its soul.

@Kevinyoutwat - That sounds lovely. My kids used to come with me when they were younger & I can still occasionally talk them into it. Our market is the same you can get anything from high end meat to knock off Gucci. I hope my kids have fond memories of it too.

Greasy spoon? There isnt one near me, but there aren’t many cafes apart from an expensive garden centre which attracts older folk by the bus load so that is somewhere id avoid. Purely as my time is limited so i dont hang about.

i went to a cafe for a cup of tea yesterday with a friend and her dog. It was nice to have a pot of tea!

About 4 hours ago. Just had a mug of tea, but there are loads near us that do a good breakfast. Lots of' workers cafes' near me

It was sometime in 2021, the caff round from my house was an old style greasy spoon with full Scottish breakfasts, hot filled rolls and later in the day rib stickers like lentil and bacon soup, macaroni and chips or pie chips and beans. It was always busy.

Then a new owner came in and changed the main meals to monster burgers, pizzas and Mexican food and the breakfasts weren't as good. It closed down after a few months.

I think the nearest greasy spoon to me now is on an industrial estate about 10 miles away.

Probably a few months ago? There's one down the road that's just changed hands that I need to check out so might go in for an early breakfast tomorrow.
When I lived in Brixton there was one round the corner run by a Vietnamese family, as well as the best fry-ups if you knew to ask you could get a bowl of the most amazing pho I've ever tasted in my life.

Enko · 23/01/2023 10:26

I go a few times a year. Our local one does an amazing breakfast.

Having said that if this one was to close. I am unlikely to go again. Unless they do an amazing breakfast it's not mt sort of thing. Having said that I do love a good b fast

In my younger days in Brighton we would always go to the Market Diner after a night out, started off as a 24 hour caff to serve the delivery drivers to the fruit and veg warehouse, then evolved to being the place to go when you were fucked at 3am.
You had to go out into the yard to go to the loo and something mad always happened.
If you know, you know 😂

Ahhh I'm so glad that's still there!! I spent my happiest years in Brixton and had more plates of chips there than I can remember...
