We went to a greasy spoon place today as we were out of milk, butter etc.. it was pretty gross, came out stinking of fried food. (They never seem to have extractor fans??)

However, we regularly go to other cafes which do lovely food/breakfasts. Think homemade baked beans, avocado and fancy smoothies. But for some reason the nice places are never open on a Sunday 🤔

I go to cafes all the time! Whenever I’m out with the kids - weekends, school holidays. I’m not really sure what a “caff” is. There was a greasy cafe in uni we used to gather in after a night out for breakfast. Is that a caff? Most of the cafes I know now are the same but a bit nicer/ more expensive. Plenty of independent places though.

SouthCountryGirl · 22/01/2023 14:17

Most weekends after parkrun

Lifesyoungdream · 22/01/2023 14:17

Our cycling group sometimes stop at them when out on a ride. They are usually cheap and good value for what you get.
They also don’t mind if you are a bit wet and muddy 😀

afty · 22/01/2023 14:18

A greasy-spoon type place? Probably around 20 years ago, maybe a little less.

GetDownkeith · 22/01/2023 14:20

October. Dh, in-laws and I were in one when we were all together for a family emergency. It was the closest place and we were all starving. The food was basic choices and it was bloody lovely.

Legally they must have extractor fans.

transformandriseup · 22/01/2023 14:21

I don't think there is anything like that where I live now. There is the choice of expensive restaurants or nothing. it would be nice to have some cheaper, more casual options.

Lemonademoney · 22/01/2023 14:22

Hadn’t been to one for years then one opened up in our village. I pop in every couple of weeks now. Sometimes just for coffee and sometimes for a bacon roll as they are amazing! Our village only has a few little shops so it initially stemmed from
wanting to support a local business.

dudsville · 22/01/2023 14:23

I haven't been to a caff (if we're taking greasy spoon) for years, about the same for fast food generally. I'll go to a cafe that has delicious, relatively healthy breakfasts though about monthly!

TheodoraKuphal · 22/01/2023 14:24

I visit every other day, I can’t help but look for fragrant coffee and a delicious dessert

MsRinky · 22/01/2023 14:27

Couple of weeks ago in a bleak and wet Bognor. I had fishfinger sarnie and chips, which was actually lovely fresh fat battered strips of cod, not orange crumbed coley oblongs, and a great cup of tea. Smashing. Would always take a greasy spoon over a Costa, preferably a Greek or Cypriot one with lomo and halloumi on the breakfast. None round here, although I do have lots of cafes that do a great Punjabi breakfast.

sittingonacornflake · 22/01/2023 14:29

Many years ago. But now I fancy going to a decent one!

BlueKaftan · 22/01/2023 14:29

We go to our local a few times a week for breakfast. It’s got a lovely atmosphere. Very French.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 22/01/2023 14:31

I'm vegan so don't go to a "greasy spoon".

Il go to a nice cafe though maybe once a month.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 22/01/2023 14:32

I'm not sure I've ever been to one. Come to think of it I don't even know where one is. I've been to regular cafes and coffee shops of course but I don't think they count

Overthebow · 22/01/2023 14:33

I have no idea what a caff or greasy spoon is. I go to cafes usually 2-3 times per week for brunch, lunch or afternoon tea. 1-2 times during the week on my days off work with my toddler with friends and sometimes at the weekend too. I’ll eat anything from a bacon roll to smoked salmon and eggs so like places with a good range and good quality food.

lovelilies · 22/01/2023 14:33

Loads of caffs in my town. Hate paying over the odds for pre packaged poncy sandwiches in pret/ Starbucks/costa

Snoken · 22/01/2023 14:36

I’m assuming it’s the greasy-spoon type of place they are concerned about, if so it’s been over 15 years. I’m not a fan of that type of food so I have no reason to go, but I can appreciate that it’s an important part of British culture.

cleanasawhistle · 22/01/2023 14:42

I meet friends in a caff every Tuesday morning.
Supermarket caff about once a month with DH.

LlynTegid · 22/01/2023 14:45

About ten days ago, if an independent business that does not charge £3 for a coffee counts.

If 90% of the food offering is what would be called 'greasy spoon', then about a month ago.

Look at you, falling over yourself to state your posh white middle class credentials.

NewBootsAndRanty · 22/01/2023 14:46

Think homemade baked beans, avocado and fancy smoothies.

That is in no way shape or form a caff.

OnePerson · 22/01/2023 14:48

This thread is hilarious with the fake 'what is a caff' comments.

AlwaysInFlats · 22/01/2023 14:53

I’ve only been to a ‘caff’, greasy spoon type place once that I remember and couldn’t even bring myself to drink the tea. The cups had old tea run stains on them so not properly cleaned. I’m sure there must be better ones, but as a vegan, they’re probably not somewhere I want to go. The smell of grease/fat was overwhelming but a relative who loves a greasy spoon tells me that’s part of the charm. The staff were lovely though. I’m definitely not their target market to be fair to them. Quite happy to see them disappear. I use our local tearoom and a vegan cafe which are both lovely.
