Two yesterday! I love popping to a cafe with my friends

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 22/01/2023 14:54

This thread is hilarious with the fake 'what is a caff' comments.

We don't say Caff in Liverpool- but I knew what op meant because of Eastenders haha.

Hawkins001 · 22/01/2023 14:57

It's a mix as.to as and when possible, but I do enjoy the food

meow1989 · 22/01/2023 14:59

We have a caff at the end of our road - fry up with a fried slice and coffee in a mug with the sugar already in.
We frequent it regularly and would choose to go there over a cafe.

EyesOnThePies · 22/01/2023 15:04

Oooh, a proper caff.

I worked in theatre in the W End when I left Uni, and everyone used to go to little cafes / greasy spoons, loads of them in the small side and back streets. They are all now posh shops or expensive restaurants.

And old neighbourhood caffs now are Costa (near me) or Gail’s (the leafy uplands).

And I really fancy egg and chips now!

LBF2020 · 22/01/2023 15:07

@NewBootsAndRanty I know :-) I was saying that what is sold in a cafe (not caff!!) that I regularly go to.

The greasy spoon I went to today was grjm, they seemed to specialise in anaemic fried eggs. definitely no avocado on the menu there

Frumpymumma · 22/01/2023 15:07

Around oct. And it was so busy we had to table share. All of them on out little high street are always busy and all nice except one which is very greasy spoon

My ex mother in law once told me that it was one of the things that marked me out as ‘the underclass.’

She used to pretend she didn’t know what a lot of things like caffs were.

EspeciallyDetermined · 22/01/2023 15:12

Ages ago, there's only one left in our town now, its down a side street and you can't really see in which is a bit off-putting as I often go out on my own. The rest are either chains or smashed avocado types now. Wetherspoons has cornered the market in fried breakfasts here. We used to have a Poppins and I loved going for egg and chips there but it closed 3 or 4 years ago.

Dontslipontheice · 22/01/2023 15:14

Last year in Edinburgh. Lovely it was too. There's nothing like a big mug of tea and beans on toast in a caff. Much more satisfying than pratting about with a squashed sandwich and calling it a panini. Or paying a fiver for some plain yoghurt, a teaspoon of granola and two blueberries.

Howmanysleepsnow · 22/01/2023 13:07

Never

Do you mind me asking what your background is? Not judging, just curious as I've never come across anyone who has never been in a traditional British caff?

Crikeyalmighty · 22/01/2023 15:18

We live in Bath and whilst it's cafe central it's distinctly lacking on 'caffs' - I don't think Boston Bean or Kingsmead kitchen , Cassia or Lounge can count can it ?? even though all do a lovely breakfast!!

AllOfThemWitches · 22/01/2023 15:19

What's a caff? I go for brunch pretty regularly if that's what it means.

IHeartGeneHunt · 22/01/2023 15:19

Plenty near me and I'll go in maybe once a month. They're always busy.

cushioncovers · 22/01/2023 15:19

Neither greasy spoons around my way do anything for veggies so I don't bother. How hard is it to buy some frozen veggie sausages and burgers and chuck them in the fryer.

Ostryga · 22/01/2023 15:23

This morning. They do a fab breakfast and will do a make your own fry up for fussy Dd. Plus 2 breakfasts and drinks cost less than £15. We love it

onelittleclara · 22/01/2023 15:24

Ooo at least once a week. Proper greasy spoon caff but one that does nice coffee. Unless you want toastie/paninis/ reheated bacon baps, coffee shops dont cut it.

Think all day breakfast, builders tea served in mugs, plastic sticky table covers. Lots of fried food, chips with a full English breakfast etc Grin

Brunch wouldn't be served at a caff in my experience.

skyeisthelimit · 22/01/2023 15:27

we actively use them when on holiday in South Devon. I would far rather eat in a cafe than a costa or chain place which is overpriced and the same everywhere that you go. There are several in our nearest town and I always use them.

I would far rather support a local business to keep it going than use a chain place.

They aren't all greasy spoons. Our local one does breakfasts, ham egg & chips, omelettes, jackets potatoes, paninis etc. They all have a good range of coffees and other drinks too.

MaryDerry · 22/01/2023 15:27

Last visit for me was Nov but our fav caff shuts during winter months unless there's an event on - which there was this weekend so DP took advantage and had a sausage and egg sarnie whilst out with the dog.

It's on the Pennine Way so full of walkers they refill flasks if you ask nicely and do great cake.

I'm a toasted teacake type of gal if having breakfast. And they do a great jacket potatoe.

A caff is a traditional old style cafe that used to catered for mostly working men/truckers/builders etc. back in the day. It was a no frills place that usually just did cooked breakfasts and a mug of tea or coffee with toast. Men would come in on their breaks have a breakfast mug of tea read the paper and go off again. They were found in lay-bys industrial estates and near factories. They would open early morning and usually be shut by 2pm. I can remember going in to one with my father who drove a lorry for a living back when I was a child in the 1970's. It was a strange place full of men swearing, smoking & reading papers and the air was heavy with fried food. I had to drink milky sweet tea as there was only tea or coffee on offer that was it. Smile

XenoBitch · 22/01/2023 15:28

I go to one every couple of weeks or so.

Ted27 · 22/01/2023 15:29

Friday, in fact every Friday for breakfast with friends. There are at least 3 I can think of on my local high street, always packed out, plus several more who do cheap and cheerful breakfasts
More likely to go out for breakfast than dinner.

We ago out for breakfast at least once when we are on holiday.

Witsendwilly · 22/01/2023 15:29

This morning. It’s rare that you don’t have to wait for a table

caffelattetogo · 22/01/2023 15:35

Yesterday. It was wonderful. Try to go most weeks. Never go to Costa!
