Neither greasy spoons around my way do anything for veggies so I don't bother. How hard is it to buy some frozen veggie sausages and burgers and chuck them in the fryer.

They would need a separate fryer though.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 22/01/2023 15:39

Two weeks ago, 1 bacon, scrambled egg, mushrooms, bubble and squeak and fried slice loads of brown sauce and a milky coffee, lovely treat.

cushioncovers · 22/01/2023 15:40

Using the same oil wouldn't bother me. But I understand that some people wouldn't like it.

Crabwoman · 22/01/2023 15:40

Probably 2021 as I met friends after lockdown. Before then, once a month to the caff over the road from work.

It is a proper caff, with a small brekkie, regular brekkie and mega brekkie options. It does now do a veggie brekkie.

Apart from this, it does stuff on/in toast, omelettes, pie, lasagne, fish fingers with chips and a daily roast dinner. The chips and mushroom gravy are a thing of wonder.

At lunchtime it has a queue of elderly windowed/single men queuing with their own plates which would be filled with a meal, wrapped in foil and then sent on their way with an extra slice of apple pie. 😊

Yes, that’s one reason I don’t go to caffs. I’d feel IWBU asking if their chips were cooked in the same oil as the meat (and I hate baked beans so beans on toast isn’t an option).

Bestcatmum · 22/01/2023 15:41

My colleague and I go there all the time for omelette, salad or a baked porato for lunch. The local one in mt village is busy all the time too.

Most do jacket potatoes or sandwiches and even salads. Caffs don't only serve breakfasts.

the one i went to and dh particularly liked, free cup of tea, shut down as the shopping mall was being extended Sad

Jacket potatoes, hadn’t thought of that.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/01/2023 15:58

Oh my first flat used to be over the road from one that was attached to the dry cleaners! Going in is like being transported to the early 80’s. Formica tables and cracked pleather chairs. Net curtains hanging in the window and a delightful grubby looking orange and lime green plastic tiled floor.
Drinks served in mismatched mugs and the best bacon sandwiches.
The counter was one of those windowed display cabinets that had a display of cans of (unbranded) pop and packets of kitkats and mars bars.
You could sit there eating your breakfast whilst being lulled to a sleepy comatose state by the industrial washers and dryers and inhaling the chemical detergent smells.
I need to go back, I hope it’s the same!

Indigoshift · 22/01/2023 15:59

Never used the term 'Caff' but yesterday.
No prets in my town. There is a costa though.

ProfYaffle · 22/01/2023 16:00

There are lots of cafes in my little town, not sure whether they could be classed as caffs though. I suspect the one with Cath Kidtson style oilcloths that overlooks the village green possibly not, the one with sticky tables overlooking the Morrisons roundabout possibly yes.

Indigoshift · 22/01/2023 16:01

Is a caff an upmarket greasy spoon? Is it a Southern term?

This thread is hilarious with the fake 'what is a caff' comments.

I know, it's as though they can't see how thick they look 😂

Just read the link peole, or ask someone to read it to you...

WinterFoxes · 22/01/2023 16:05

About four years ago when I took DS to look around a uni and we went to a greasy spoon in the covered market and had a full English for brunch. It was good.

I used to take DC for the best full English ever when they were teens but it was at a local Cafe Rouge (now closed) so probably doesn't count.

This morning.
Me and DH had a full English breakfast each.
It was magnificent.
In laws kept raving over this particular cafe so thought we would give it a try.

why do you think they’re fake? I’ve never heard the word ‘caff’ before this thread. Just because someone has different experiences to you doesn’t mean they’re fake.

Jamieukk · 22/01/2023 16:16

I always visit pinner cafe not far from Euston station when I'm down there.

UsingChangeofName · 22/01/2023 16:16

Yesterday.
It was lush.
A cooked breakfast is the food of the gods.

bluedelphinium · 22/01/2023 16:16

Yesterday to get a sandwich for the train. Freshly made, amazing massive bread cake and the man even threw me in a bun as they were nearly closing!

madeyemoody · 22/01/2023 16:20

We have one by us and it's a treasure. A old Masonic hall that's not been changed at all since the 80's. A full massive English breakfast with unlimited toast and tea is £5.50

It's incredible but it's so popular you can barely get a table. We always forget about it too and end up Starbucks...

Megapint · 22/01/2023 16:23

Every Saturday morning. Catch the bus into town. Get my fruit & veg from the indoor market & get breakfast in the market caff. Bacon, sausage, egg, beans, mushrooms, tinned tomatoes & fried bread. Cheap & tasty.

NotMeNoNo · 22/01/2023 16:24

Building sites still have them - large construction sites start early about 7/8 and break for "breakfast" at 10. D
I miss those doorstep bacon and egg sandwiches on freezing days.
