So worried nasty bu

My 17 yr old DD sustained a very nasty wound to her knee last Wednesday requiring surgery to clean and close up the wound. On Friday we returned to ED due to the knee becoming infected. More surgery was done on Saturday with further surgery is booked for Monday. IV ABs have been given.

I have just found out (via google) that the particular bug that has caused the infection is multi-drug resistant. Her leg is oozing and it smells awful. She is vomiting but no temperature.

I'm usually pretty stoic but this has got me so very worried. I'm terrified she's going to loose her leg if the infection can't be controlled!

Don't know why I'm posting. Just need to get this off my chest.

Ouch ! when did she start the new antibiotics ? It can take a little while to take effect.

hisroyalweiner · 22/01/2023 19:27

New ABs started yesterday. I feel so sorry for her. She has a chronic lung condition which has impacted her all her life. The last couple of months has been doing so well health and social wise. Got her driver’s license and a little car. Just left school and about to start a Beauty Therapy course which she is very excited about. Now she’s been hit by this.

Op of course you are worried and I'm sorry it's taken a while for reading comprehension to kick in on this thread. One of my dc had similar with infected wounds and its really scary, I would just keep raising it if you have any concerns at all and ask why, if something is scary looking to you and dd, but not of concern to the medics. She is obviously in the right place - information is your friend here, specifically information from the people treating her.

@OneFrenchEgg

thank you for understanding. I am trying not to think of the worst case scenario. DD in theatre now.

My aunt had sepsis recently. Very very ill. But, the right anti biotics worked fast. She's now fine.

Don't worry. She's in the best place and they'll be watching her.

Stop googling. Easier said than done but it won't help your mental health at the moment.

I hope she's better soon x

hisroyalweiner · 22/01/2023 23:35

DD just out of surgery and in recovery. I should be able to see her in 30mins or so. Surgery took 1.5hrs. Wound cleaned out again and now has VAC dressing. Will require further surgery Wednesday or Thursday. The Infectious Disease unit is involved and advising re: ABs. Will be on IV ABs for a little while and may need a skin graft.

thank you everyone for your kind thoughts

JESUS CHRIST😳 that looks awful!! I hope she can recover soon and isn’t in too much pain. Wishing all the best and I hope she’s still able to join her beauty course once she’s feelimg up to it🤞

MeinKraft · 23/01/2023 00:19

Oh bless her that looks so unbelievably painful. Really hope she turns a corner soon. I had a vac dressing after my c sections and they're a great job.

OneFrenchEgg · 23/01/2023 00:54

You poor things. I hope you and dd come out of this relatively unscathed. Keep hope op x

Blindsandcurtains · 23/01/2023 06:53

Good grief. That looks horrendous. I hope she is doing ok.

MyOldCaravan · 24/01/2023 18:02

How's your DD doing now OP?

SummerHouse · 24/01/2023 18:13

Sending you positive and healing thoughts. It looks like a really horrible injury but the human body has never ceased to amaze me with how it can bounce back, especially when it's a young person. Hope you are hanging in there OP.

hisroyalweiner · 24/01/2023 18:30

Just a quick update.

DD doing well - eating, colour back in her face, and more talkative etc. so the change in ABs is working. Waiting for final surgery to clean up any remaining infection and to close the wound. Maybe home by the end of the week.

Again many thanks for people’s kind thoughts.

What a relief

What antibiotic is she on?that looks awful, what country are you in? do they speak English?how old is she? She should be on the strongest I’ve antibiotics possible!

Throwncrumbs · 24/01/2023 18:48

Wound vacs are really good at sucking all the gunk out, is she going home with one?

OldTinHat · 24/01/2023 18:49

Just here to send every best wish, fingers crossed that the ABs are now correct and working and that she recovers well 💐🌷🌺 What a terrible accident.

IhearyouClemFandango · 24/01/2023 18:54

Ah the poor love, that must have given her a real knock. Sounds like she's turning a corner now. 🤞

The sea can harbour (excuse the pun) some pretty nasty bugs. My aunt helped a stranded porpoise once and was scratched in the process, ended up catching some weird tropical bacteria from it which meant a huge abscess and lots of surgeries...just couldn't kick it! But she did in the end, as will your daughter. 👍👍

ARoughRide · 24/01/2023 18:56

Great news that she seems to be improving op. Such a worry for you. I hope she makes a speedy recovery and will soon be home with you Flowers

Wibbly1008 · 24/01/2023 19:00

I just looks like a nasty wound. I would ask if she is on the correct ABs , as they can change them if she is vomiting.

hisroyalweiner · 24/01/2023 19:05

@Throwncrumbs

DD is now on the right AB to fight the identified infection (which she is responding to). I don’t know if she will go home with the VAC dressing.
