Actors who seem to play themselves in movies?

Are there any actors who always seem to play themselves in movies? I don't necessarily mean that they aren't talented just that for one reason or another its hard to disassociate the actor from the role?

I have a hard time seeing George Clooney as anyone besides GC.

I also came on to say Helena Bonham Carter. The "I'm so quirky" thing is wearing a bit thin.

Pretty much everyone then who’s not Daniel Day-Lewis 😆

Therealog · 24/04/2023 07:51

Adam Sandler
Jennifer Aniston
Sylvester stallone
Melissa Mccarty is always zany and sarcastic

The list just goes on and on. I was watching a film the other evening and found the casting distracting- because the “actor who only plays themselves” was in the role of father to the lead character- except he wasn’t a good supporting actor and it took away from the actual story.
Sometimes it’s good to have an unknown so we can fully immerse ourselves in the story without being distracted.

Of course, the star power draws people to the cinemas. Having a well known name guarantees more bums on seats and revenue so the industry needs the well known names to “open” he film.

Ray Winstone is Ray Winstone- always

Did you see Ray Winstone as Henry VIII? It was a hoot

I think some actor's job IS to be themselves in anything. e.g. The Rock. It's his brand to be The Rock in everything. To change this is to damage his career, I think. Jason Statham is the same. For some (e.g. Jim Carrey or Jennifer Aniston) I think this eventually becomes a source of frustration for them - people only seem to want to see them the same each time.

Some are just so familiar that you cannot help but recognise them in their roles. Emma Thomspon is a great example (for me). By now I've seen her in so many things that she is primarily Emma Thompson in every role. But I don't think that's necessarily her fault, just the impact of a long and varied career that means I've sene her in about a hundred roles by now. FWIW I think Kate Winslet falls into this category as well.

That said, Gary Oldman seems to have avoided this problem. He is always the character first whenever I watch him.

I think Hugh Grant was pretty different in Bridget Jones Diary and he's got more versatile as he's got older.
Mackenzie Crook?! From Gareth in The Office to Detectorists he's unrecognisable.
YY to Michael Caine.
The worst one for me was Sean Connery. Whether he was playing an Italian Monk, an American cop or a naval captain he was always the same Scotsman

I feel a bit like that with Olivia Coleman even though she’s highly rated.

100% and I think she is super overrated

AntoniaMacaronia · 24/04/2023 11:19

The guy who plays Billy Elliot’s Dad is the same in everything.

Yes. He always looks very uncomfortable being there.

Bill Nighy's characters are generally a lot more interesting than he is in RL, lovely though he is.

Rockfordpeach · 24/04/2023 11:22

Robert Sheehan of The Misfits and Umbrella Academy fame. Still love him though

Judi Dench IMO.

This is one of the reasons I love Gary Oldman. What an actor he is.

Gary Oldman is just brilliant

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 24/04/2023 11:34

I don’t get the hatred for Olivia Coleman. She may physically look the same but she doesn’t play the same part in Queen Anne, Tyrannosaur, Green Wing etc. I think she does pathos, anger, hurt and humour equally well? Same with Emma Thompson?

lostinfusion · 24/04/2023 11:46

Jim Carrey with the exception of The Trueman Show

DogInATent · 24/04/2023 11:55

Audie Murphy. Maybe not what you mean, he did actually play himself. Unlike Richard Todd who chose not to.

ReadtheReviews · 24/04/2023 11:56

Definitely the lovely Jeff Goldblum. Always amused that he teaches acting classes. The self he is in films is a self I really like though.
Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise.
I was going to say John Malkovich but no, because Lenny.

the80sweregreat · 24/04/2023 12:08

Jack Nicholson always seemed to play the same character as he played in ' one flew over the cuckoos nest' and ' the shining ' in the 70s and 80s.
Johnny Depp is versatile, he is a more 'chameleon ' actor.
