Actors who seem to play themselves in movies?

Are there any actors who always seem to play themselves in movies? I don't necessarily mean that they aren't talented just that for one reason or another its hard to disassociate the actor from the role?

I have a hard time seeing George Clooney as anyone besides GC.

Came on to say Olivia Coleman and Bill Nighy.

Emma Watson, has the range of a tea towel. How she became as successful as she has is baffling to me.

He was brilliant in The Gentlemen but I think Guy Richie can make anyone brilliant (apart from Madonna)

Yes, he’s really upped his game the last few years.

I think some actors just have such recognisable mannerisms that people can't help but see them as themselves even when they have actually played very varied roles. Olivia Coleman is definitely one of those.

It's easier to see someone as just their character when they don't have a particularly distinctive way of talking/moving.

Here to say Jeff Goldblum. Luckily himself is a fabulous self.

SnowAndIceLobelia · 20/01/2023 19:38

Judi Dench IMO.

This is one of the reasons I love Gary Oldman. What an actor he is.

MaggieMagpie357 · 20/01/2023 19:42

Really not sure how Emma Thompson got into this list?! Baffling.

Anyway, definitely Michael Caine (cannot for the life of me understand why he is so revered,) Jennifer Coolidge, Dwayne Johnson, and I would have said Hugh Grant until he did Paddington 2, which seemed to get him out of a typecast rut.

MySoCalledStrife · 20/01/2023 19:43

I agree with previous posters who say Olivia Coleman is Olivia Coleman in everything she is in. Every time I watch her I just feel she's rehashing Sophie from her Peep Show days.

Also the awful Emma Watson.

And Judi Dench.

I feel a bit like that with Olivia Coleman even though she’s highly rated.

This!

Bill Nighy.

Immediately popped into my mind too! He's a fun self to watch though!

God and she’s so smug too! Also baffled by her success.

Scarecrowrowboat · 20/01/2023 19:49

Steve Martin
John Candy

Michael Caine in The Quiet American is sublime. Absolutely sublime.

SicParvisMagna · 20/01/2023 19:49

Tom Holland. Usually just himself with an American accent.
Ryan Reynolds
Will Smith for the most part
Emma Watson
Mike Myers

BiggerBoyMadeMeDoit · 20/01/2023 19:49

Eddie Redmayne Does this. Eurgh.

ReedRite · 20/01/2023 19:50

One of the many who saw this thread title in ‘Active’ and immediately thought ‘Bill Nighy’.

SnowAndIceLobelia · 20/01/2023 19:50

I agree about Hugh G and Paddington 2. I commenetd after that film that I had really no idea Hugh Grant could act. I thought he was excellent and I certainly look at him now with different eyes.

ShirleyHolmes · 20/01/2023 19:51

I don’t agree with lots of these:

daniel Craig- have you see him in Our Friends in The North?
Emma Thompson - she’s not good with accents and her voice is distinctive but she’s amazingly versatile. You can’t compare Howard’s End, Remains of the Day, Nanny Pcphee, the Winter Guest … I could go on.
Judi Dench
Olivia Coleman

agree with Keira Knightley.

SwedishEdith · 20/01/2023 19:52

Harrison Ford

Jijithecat · 20/01/2023 19:53

Danny Dyer

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/01/2023 19:54

A lot of it is the direction not the acting.

echt · 20/01/2023 19:55

Robert de Niro in his later films.

moleeye · 20/01/2023 19:56

Ryan Reynolds! Always, the, same

amicissimma · 20/01/2023 19:58

Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson. Always Meryl Street and Emma Thompson playing such and such part.

Ladybird69 · 20/01/2023 20:03

Tom cruise
