Actors who seem to play themselves in movies?

Are there any actors who always seem to play themselves in movies? I don't necessarily mean that they aren't talented just that for one reason or another its hard to disassociate the actor from the role?

I have a hard time seeing George Clooney as anyone besides GC.

Seth Rogan and Jonah hill, just play their superbad characters in everything.

Trinity65 · 20/01/2023 20:08

Danny Dyer

Brad Pitt
Nic Cage
Julia Roberts

Another saying Bill Nighy.

Vince Vaughan plays the same person in every film he’s in

Bill Nighy.

I came on here to say this. I do like most things he's in though.

Billoddiesbeard · 20/01/2023 20:23

Definitely Olivia Colman (can't stand watching her and really do not get the adoration for her)
Also agree with Martin Freeman and Kiera Knightly as pretty meh!

I feel a bit like that with Olivia Coleman even though she’s highly rated.

First one that came to mind for me, too.

Aniston.

I read this in the voice of Angry Frank from The Fast Show 😂

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/01/2023 20:41

Olivia Colman
Stephen Graham
Bill Nighy
Penelope Wilton
Alan Rickman
Mackenzie Crook
Toby Jones

and frankly there’s lots more

Luckily I love them all and so I’m totally happy that they play each part as ‘them’. Lots of actors do, including the absolute best of them. Doesn’t mean they don’t have nuance or pathos or that they can’t evoke the spirit of the person they are portraying or provoke empathy. That’s the skill really.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 20/01/2023 21:13

Olivia Colman. She seems like a lovely person, but she’s exactly the same in absolutely bloody everything.
Judi Dench. Except one time, a few years ago, when I saw her on stage playing Alice Liddell in “Peter and Alice”. She was extraordinary - I completely believed this 70-something woman was a little girl.

WGACA · 20/01/2023 21:21

Judi Dench
Tom Hanks

The guy who plays Billy Elliot’s Dad is the same in everything.

Came here to literally say this.

Same here he is literally the same character in each film!

Soproudoflionesses · 20/01/2023 21:24

Danny Dyer....not films.obvs but in EE

Labralion · 20/01/2023 21:25

Owen Wilson!

Loq · 20/01/2023 21:25

Adam Sandler

Florabeebaby · 20/01/2023 21:26

Jason Bateman. Brilliant but always feels like just him!!

DouglasTea · 20/01/2023 21:29

I think its easier to pick those that DON'T play themselves. So I'll start with

Cate Blanchett

Tom Hanks

Leonardo Di Caprio

Mybumlooksbig · 20/01/2023 21:29

Olivia Colman.
Maggie Smith.

U1sce · 20/01/2023 21:30

Jim Carey - he has been playing the same character in everything, except Mr Poppers Penguins, since the 1990s and I cannot stand him - the stupid facial expressions and voices are ridiculous and really grate on me.

I agree with a lot of the other suggestions as well

WeAreTheHeroes · 20/01/2023 21:31

The antithesis of this - I watched Bombshell last night and I thought Charlize Theron must be in it later, not realising she is the first person you see. The make up and prosthetics are amazing. I still can't get over it.

Kissedbyfire1 · 20/01/2023 21:33

Liam Neeson.

Goldenboysmum · 20/01/2023 21:37

Will Smith, an annoying arse in everything!

lurchermummy · 20/01/2023 22:38

Maggie Smith

Came here to say this

You should watch Living.
