Help me find DP's lost wallet! Is it my fault?

DP's wallet has disappeared and I'm pretty sure I was the last one to see it. He never takes it out anywhere as tends to use apple pay on his phone for purchases unless he's sure he'll use cash.

I'm fairly certain I saw it yesterday morning as I needed cash to get my eyebrows threaded and didn't have enough. So I took a fiver and told him I was doing that (he was on the loo at the time if that's helpful!).

I thought I left it either on the shoe cupboard in the hallway or on the side in the kitchen. But it's nowhere to be seen! We went into town but he's adamant he didn't take it and didn't go anywhere after that.

I'm facing accusations of having thrown it away now. I'm suffering long term sleep deprivation from our toddler but I can't think I'd have thrown it in the bin! We've looked everywhere we can think of!

Is there anything that your toddler could have 'posted' it into? Once found my keys in a rarely used bag that was dangling off the coat stand at DD's head height

Is your shoe cupboard near/next to your front door/letterbox? It’s not unheard of for easily accessible small items to get stolen…

Your DH says he didn’t take wallet to town - did he need to pay eg a window cleaner? Check a business card in it? then put it back down somewhere else?

We've considered it being stolen but we have a ring doorbell that didn't pick anything up, unless they came in the back door when we took the dog for a walk in the afternoon. We sometimes forget to lock the back door but it's a quiet village and I can't imagine someone was going round trying doors in the middle of the day!

Dressing gown pocket! Every time in our house!

We are a dressing gown-free house I'm afraid! But thank you.

Check the places you think it can't possibly be.

But also, sometimes in my house things genuinely do disappear, they just go poof and are gone when it's impossible for them to have gone. I've no idea how, I assume something supernatural even though I am not in any way woo normally.

I'm starting to think it has just disappeared. When I was little I looked for my Brownie uniform for days and then suddenly one day it was hanging in my cupboard like it had never gone. Hoping the same thing happens to the wallet!

We had this one. Had the house upside down and decided it had been left behind on a till at the supermarket(years ago so didn't think about asking them to check cctv)
Found it sat in the middle of the fireplace where I had checked previously.
Hope his turns up the same way.

IThinkTheresBeenAGlitch · 19/01/2023 14:53

Also when anyone comes into work asking if one has been found I get them to give their car a really good search down the sides of the seats. They often turn up there.

Mochudubh · 19/01/2023 14:54

I second the "posting" suggestion. I once caught my 18 month old niece posting £10 notes from my BIL's wallet out their letterbox. Luckily no-one had picked them up on the outside.

What is this dressing gown free house you speak of? Shock

If it isn't in the house, it seems far more likely that he took it out than you threw it away.
I would suggest that you do what we do in these situations. Agree its an unsolvable mystery with no blame attached. Cancel any cards and buy a new wallet. It will either turn up or not but its not worth the upset

Ellie56 · 19/01/2023 15:03

Did you have any washing or ironing piles around that it could have been picked up with?

altes · 19/01/2023 15:05

Look around your toaster

mickandrorty · 19/01/2023 15:06

I have suggested this but he keeps sighing and saying he doesn't want to! Too much effort I'm sure. I think we will give it 24 hours and then cancel everything. No dodgy transactions on his accounts yet.

Down the side of the car seat ? Your husband might have picked it up as he left.

PurplePetalPip · 19/01/2023 15:15

Thanks everyone, all excellent suggestions. We've had a good look round all the usual places inside and in the car. Tried retracing our steps as far as possible. No joy yet, so we are taking a break and hoping it turns up later!

He isn't blaming me in a mean way (I wouldn't have it if he did!) but I suppose in the same way you make your OH move even though they swear they aren't sitting on the remote control.

I've suggested if it doesn't turn up within 24 hours then he will have to replace everything which he has agreed to.

Try “not” looking for it, i.e. search where you think it might be, but look at each thing and go “not a wallet “, “not a wallet” to make sure it really isn’t there.

Also, this probably only works for remembering words, but try and say any words that come into your head out loud, then sometimes what you have been trying to remember pops out of your brain.

Miala · 19/01/2023 15:17

He may be able to put a temporary halt on his cards through his banking app, without cancelling them outright. Good luck.

Tricolette · 19/01/2023 15:20

You need to pray to St Anthony.

Mrsweasleysclock · 19/01/2023 15:20

Pantry, fridge, near cereal, fruit bowl, bread bin

TimeForMeToF1y · 19/01/2023 15:22

Just keep looking, there is some kind of phenomenon where things are were you think they are but for some reason you don't see them

Don't know it it's a science fact but it's definitely a thing ime. It will somewhere obvious you've already checked

watcherintherye · 19/01/2023 15:24

It’s amazing how many things, including quite large items like the remote control, end up down the sides of our sofas. Also combs, keys, coins, earphones, all of which must have slipped out of not quite deep enough pockets!

ADHDeee · 19/01/2023 15:28

Check the places you've already checked. I've been searching for the key for the post box for ages (it also opens our back room windows as they're different to the others and no idea why this key opens both). Wasn't in the key box the first time I checked, but it was the 2nd haha.

twoandcooplease · 19/01/2023 15:30

Do you sit things on the microwave? Could it have fallen behind?

MistyFrequencies · 19/01/2023 15:30

UNDER THE BED? In capitals because we had near exact same scenario recently (but i was buying bread, not eyebrow threading) and sonehow the wallet was under the bed. Miles away from any reasonable place you might expect to find it. Only found as sheets needed washing the next day.
