I'm trying not to get fussed about this, but anonymous officials have said that they will not come out of current operational stocks.

Germany and US announce plans to send tanks to Ukraine in major sign of support for Kyiv

This doesn't imply that they have to be built from scratch. They may take export tanks that were being built for other countries and refit them for Ukraine. Or the whole thing may be strategic disinformation.

I won't copy the whole thing, just this bit:

The Abrams tanks will take months to arrive, senior administration officials said, and will require extensive training for Ukrainian troops on how to operate and service them. The US must navigate complicated supply chains for the components required for the tanks.

The procurement process will take months, the officials said, though Germany’s Leopards will arrive in the nearer term. In the meantime, the US will begin a “comprehensive training program” for the Ukrainians on the Abrams, which will require significant maintenance once they are deployed. The training will occur outside Ukraine.

With Ramstein.."Air" coming up before to long...

Rumours/public statements again about MiG-29 transfer - possible backfill with F-16??.....

Or is this the start of the nudge towards e.g. F-16 (hopefully not really old ones) direct to Ukraine Air Force.

@MissConductUS the Americans stated yesterday that it will be fall before the Abrams get to Ukraine.

It may be that that this a pessimistic forecast but that's what was said. Leopards can come much faster. Neither is a swift option though.

It has also probably-reliably been said that certain Ukrainian pilots are being trained on F-16s even though non have been promised. Can't remember which country, might have been European though.

I dunno. I've seen everything online from "in time for the big offensive" to "a few months" to "next fall". I'm now assuming that it's all strategic disinformation to keep the Russians guessing when they'll show up at the front. The Leopards will certainly get there first.

I'm also not buying the idea that they have to be procured. There are a lot of Abrams deployed in Germany and the Middle East. We had them in Afghanistan for god's sake. The very latest variants may have kit they want to downgrade for fear of it falling into Russian hands, but I really doubt that we have to go to General Dynamics to buy 31 tanks for Ukraine.

Key Takeaways

Russian forces may be engaging in limited spoiling attacks across most of the frontline in Ukraine in order to disperse and distract Ukrainian fronts and launch a decisive offensive operation in Luhansk Oblast.

The Russian military appears to be shifting its focus toward conventional forces deployed to Luhansk Oblast and away from the non-traditional force structure of the Wagner Group and its focus on Bakhmut.

The Kremlin and Russian milbloggers attempted to downplay the Western provision of tanks to Ukraine, indicating that they likely find these systems threatening to Russian prospects.

Russian forces claimed that Ukrainian forces conducted counteroffensive operations near Svatove as Russian forces continued limited ground attacks near Kreminna.

Ukrainian forces have likely made advances around Kreminna.

Ukrainian officials acknowledged that Ukrainian forces withdrew from Soledar.

Russian forces continued offensive operations in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka-Donetsk City area. Russian forces reportedly continued localized offensive operations near Vuhledar.

Russian forces continued to conduct small-scale ground attacks across the Zaporizhia Oblast front line, likely to attempt to fix Ukrainian forces in Zaporizhia Oblast.

Russian milbloggers are divided over the veracity of Zaporizhia Oblast occupation official Vladimir Rogov’s ongoing, overblown information operation.

The Kremlin is attempting to downplay new restrictions on crossing the Russian border, likely in an effort to contain panic within Russian society about a likely second mobilization wave.

Russian President Vladimir Putin may be attempting to conduct another wave of mobilization discreetly out of concern for undermining his support among Russians.

MissConductUS · 26/01/2023 11:33

I believe I've found the explanation for the timing of the US delivery of Abrams tanks to Ukraine. I had a bit of the puzzle solved. It's due to sensitive technology they don't want the Russians to get, and they do indeed have to get them built to export standards.

M1 Abrams Tanks In U.S. Inventory Have Armor Too Secret To Send To Ukraine - M1 tanks will be heading to Ukraine, but they can’t just be pulled from U.S. stocks due to their sensitive armor.

This, in part, would explain the Pentagon's reluctance to send them. They may be able to take some older tanks without the depleted uranium armor and upgrade everything else on them, so it may not be a case of building from scratch.

The enormous losses that the Russians are suffering are starting to have some effect at least on Wagner, it seems

twitter.com/ChrisO_wiki/status/1618541590599065602

The Wagner Group is facing difficulties finding new recruits after suffering huge casualties in eastern Ukraine, according to reports. It's said to be trying to find recruits in Central Asian prisons and possibly even merging with Ruslan Kadyrov's Chechen forces

2/ According to the brother of Paul Whelan, the ex-US Marine currently imprisoned in Russia, Wagner has attempted to recruit more inmates without much success. The prisoners are well aware of the use of their fellow convicts as cannon fodder and now mostly refuse to go.
3/ "Everyone else has a clear picture of what happens to prisoners who go to fight the Kremlin's war in Ukraine," David Whelan writes in his most recent update. He says that while in the last round of recruitment Wagner managed to recruit 115 men, this time only 8 joined.
4/ This is corroborated by the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel. A source tells it: "Where to get people is a big headache. There are already 'crumbs' coming from the zones [penal colonies], whom no one wants."
5/ Instead, Wagner is reportedly looking to Russia's large immigrant community and the prisons of Central Asia for new recruits:

"The PMC is working with migrants, trying to bring people from Central Asian zones, including those with combat experience.
6/ "However, Central Asian mercenaries are the wrong way round. Instructors say they are not suitable. Only a large mobilisation and a decision to hand over 'refuseniks' to PMCs can help. And without a big mobilisation, even handing over the refuseniks will not be a saviour.
7/ "Who will find so many of them? And we need tens of thousands of people, with literally daily replenishment."

It's likely a sign of how bad things are now that the source says that a merger of Wagner with the Kadyrovites has been discussed.
8/ The source is doubtful that this would work, however: "It is really hard to believe in such a thing. The Kadyrovites have separate structures, the PMCs have separate ones. Everything is different."
9/ "Many veterans don't much like the Kadyrovites, the Kadyrovites don't much like former criminals. But the main thing is that the styles of warfare are so different that they can't be combined. And the Kadyrovites are a set of units, and Wagner is an army.
10/ "In short, there's not even a clue as to how to combine them."
11/ According to a VChK-OGPU source, Wagner's leadership is concerned that the Russian government will try to reduce Yevgeny Prigozhin's influence by "attempts to cosplay Wagner and breed private military companies", 'dilute' its identity and steal its best personnel.
12/ However, Wagner intends to resist with its usual brutal disciplinary methods: "Wagner's security forces are already saying that termination of the contract to switch to another PMC will be seen as treason, with all its consequences." /end

🔹 t.me/vchkogpu/36068

So it's either mass mobilization for this 'special operation' against a country that never threatened Russia in the first place, or a slow attrition.

The consensus seems to be that mobilization has never really stopped and that it may well ratchet up heavily. Given the rumoured shortage of ammunition, it could be literally attempting to take Ukraine by throwing bodies at the defenders, as in Bakhmut.

MissConductUS · 26/01/2023 23:13

Wagner used to be quite selective about who they hired. You had to have professional military service to get hired there. Now it's a mess.

Russia has a regular, ongoing draft for mandatory military service. I think they've just expanded it to avoid another mass mobilization. I've no idea if it's gotten them the numbers they want. You used to be able to bribe your way out of it. That's probably become more difficult and expensive.

Some types of ammo do seem to be in short supply for the Russians, but it's hard to tell how much that's due to low production, corruption or logistical problems/Ukrainian attacks. It's the bigger kit that they can't ramp up production on - tanks, air defense systems, etc. They also can't mobilize officers. That's one reason why Ukraine has made a priority of targeting command posts and headquarters locations.

Day 337, January 26th. Summary of Arestovych and Feygin broadcast
Posted on 27 January 2023

⚡️ “Escalation”:
After confirming Leopard 2, Abrams, and Challenger 2 supplies, 🇷🇺 Russia made loud announcements, considering the West involvement in the war. Announcements are worth nothing if there are no actions. Everything 🇷🇺 Russia says is already considered worthless.

Let’s consider 🇷🇺 Russian options for escalation:
– Attack on NATO territory – consequences are clear
– Attack on bridges – remember that 🇺🇦 Ukraine bombed Antonioskyi Bridge with HIMARS for several months
– Bomb Bankova street [ Presidential Office ] – they can destroy 2 floors, but then what?

⚡️ Tanks:
Leopard 2 is the main tank of NATO. Challenger 2 and Abrams are respectively main tanks of 🇬🇧 U.K. and 🇺🇸 U.S.
Only Leopard 2 fire control can find BMP at a distance of 5000m during the night and reliably hit at 2800m. Its fire control is much better than anything 🇷🇺 Russia has.
A battalion of tanks in a nightly counter-attack will change everything in a specific area. There will be multiple battalions (one with Abrams), that’s the next game-changing weapon after the arrival of M142 HIMARS, but this is specifically for an offensive. Expecting a total of 80-120 tanks. It will be challenging to integrate them, but expecting that to happen by April.

⚡️ Airstrike:
🇷🇺 Russia launched 55 winged missiles, of which 47 (85%) were intercepted, 20 near Kyiv. 3 Kh-59 intercepted. 11 people were killed, and 11 were wounded (data at 15:00 local time). Last night there were attacks by Shahed drones. Most energy issues in Odesa, Vinnitsia, and Kyiv districts, now returned to planned supplies. The effect is probably not what 🇷🇺 Russia had intended.
The ratio of 85% intercepted is good, usually from 75%-85% intercepted.
NASAMS are good, they strike with accuracy if in the right spot. That’s a task for military intelligence, to analyze launch locations, and the enemy is constantly adjusting launch methods.

⚡️ Putin’s speeches:
Last week Putin said “Our objective is to protect LPR/DPR”, while this week he said, “Our interests were threatened, we had to act”. The difference is, that the territories of Luhansk and Donetsk are well known, and they can be measured. Interests are very vague descriptions, and as objective, they can be claimed at any time.
Arestovych has a version, that in the 12th month of the war, Putin finally started to listen to the military, who explained that there is no way to conquer Donetsk and Luhansk districts, not even with available forces and reserves. The maximum that they can reach is the border of Konstantynivka.

⚡️ Battlefield update:
🇷🇺 Russia doing some tactical movements, in preparation for the offensive, which is expected in about a month.
🇷🇺 Russia has a favorable position for offensive – pushing against Dnipro, but no forces for that. They can’t stay in defense due to political goals, so their only option is to slowly crawl forward. They can do intensive battles only at 80km out of 1400km front.

Vuhledar: quite intense tactical battles, if the enemy claims 2 brigades, it means just a few companies, less than a battalion.

Opytne, Spartak: quite intense tactical battles

Avdiivka: attempts to encircle from the south, quite intense tactical battles

Bakhmut: still very tense in the south, north, and near Bakhmut

Lyman: enemy attempts to advance in the general direction of Lyman

Kreminna: 🇺🇦 Ukraine attacking (from 🇷🇺 Russian sources)

Zaporizhia: Some enemy actions and probing near Orikhiv, nothing serious, not preparations for the offensive.
Even, if some of the enemy reports of advances are true, they have gained up to 2km depth and will be kicked back soon, there is no serious offensive.

⚡️ Sanctions:
PMC “Wagner” is marked as an international criminal organization, and accounts of multiple related companies are frozen.
Multiple logistics and transportation companies are blocked, likely related to Prigozhin, Wagner, or FSB.
Unknown, why Wagner was not marked as a “terrorist”, but labeling “criminal” means that they will be chased and each transaction investigated. That will create significant issues for their usual locations of operation in Africa.
It probably won’t stop them immediately but will squeeze them into operating cash, and more expenses.
The diamond sale will be under question. Exact consequences can’t be predicted, but it will have an effect on their actions, and all related persons will be pursued.

⚡️ Prigozhin-Girkin clash:
Both exchanged aggressive public messages.
As Prigozhin is announced “persona non grata” everywhere, even in 🇷🇺 Russia, and has lost to Gerasimov, he has no choice but to increase the stakes and pick a fight. As he can’t do anything to Headquarters or Kadyrov, he is choosing to attack somebody on a secondary level. If he stops, he has to become part of the system and defend himself from other parts of the system, like FSB.
Picking a fight against a military blogger, he will not be treated seriously.

notimagain · 27/01/2023 09:40

The ratio of 85% intercepted is good, usually from 75%-85% intercepted.
NASAMS are good.

That sort of ratio is beginning to look like as good an average as it is likely to get and of course there will other assets in play, not just NASAMS.

they strike with accuracy if in the right spot. That’s a task for military intelligence, to analyze launch locations, and the enemy is constantly adjusting launch methods

[speculation]
That sounds like a slightly clunky (due translation?) way of saying that due to system detection ranges and then range of the missiles themselves there's a need to get the NASAM launchers and other assets in positions to cover the most probable approach routes to likely targets. Get it wrong and the drones will fly around the coverage or through a gap in coverage.

Those routes will be partially a function of drone launch location (which seems to flexible), but even if the launch sites were fixed the routes will still be tough to predict if the drones have a long range and can fly to the target area via non-direct routes.[/speculation]

Key Takeaways

Russian forces launched another massive series of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine on January 26.

A recent altercation between Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin and former Russian officer Igor Girkin is exposing a new domain for competition among Russian nationalist groups for political influence in Russia against the backdrop of Russian military failures in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continued his campaign against critical and opposition voices by cracking down on several major opposition media outlets.

The United States Treasury Department announced new sanctions targeting the Wagner Group’s global support network, likely in response to the Wagner Group’s renewed efforts to reinvigorate its operations outside of Ukraine.

Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces relaunched counteroffensive operations near Kreminna.

Russian forces continued ground attacks around Bakhmut, on the western outskirts of Donetsk City, and in the Vuhledar area.

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces in Zaporizhia Oblast are not conducting offensive operations at the size or scale necessary for a full-scale offensive.

Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces continued to conduct limited and localized ground attacks in Zaporizhia Oblast.

The Wagner Group likely experienced significant losses in attritional offensive operations in eastern Ukraine over the past few months.

Russian occupation officials are reportedly continuing to “nationalize” property and close places of worship belonging to the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Christian communities in occupied Zaporizhia Oblast in an effort to establish the Kremlin-affiliated Moscow Patriarchate Orthodox Church as the dominant faith in the region.

FWIW the plant at Greenville NC that produces the later block (roughly translated = version) F-16s has been under a lot of pressure for some time well before last spring, due to general demand for the aircraft.

I'm not sure the US government would be keen to approve shipment of some of the later block F-16s to Ukraine (sensitive technology etc), either directly or indirectly via an intermediate country to Ukraine, but if such countries decide to supply aircraft such as MiG-29 or mid- block F-16s to Ukraine then the new block aircraft out of the factory could be used to backfill.

Judging by a few threads that have popped up in this place over the last week I've got the impression some of that has carried over into this place.

Coincidence?
Consequence of other people reading Twitter?
Parallel campaign orchestrated by the same actors?....

Wouldn't like to say....

Well that's very true, maybe its all connected.

The Daily Mail (where I suspect most of the people on some of these threads get their news) have a lot to answer for to. Their leading story today is that the West and Russia are officially at War. In reality they've chosen to take one EU Official's words out of context. Its exhausting and frustrating all at the same time.

I mean it is no wonder that some people get themselves in a bit of a flap.
