Can anything be urgently done about a pile?

I’ve felt a lump around my anus earlier in the week, and woke up with severe pain today. It was coming from the area so I felt it and it was now grape sized. DH looked, it’s a pile. Blue in colour and external- so can’t be pushed back in.

DH went out and got me Anusol and the pharmacist advised me to take paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain. Granted, I’ve only had two doses of each and only applied Anusol at 9ish this morning- but the pain is steadily getting worse.

The pain is a solid 8/10. I have an 7 month old and can only feed her laying down as it’s severely uncomfortable to sit up with her. I can’t walk without crying, let alone be on the floor playing with her.

I have heard about piles before, never had one- and just didn’t realise it can be this severe.

Is there a private option to get it drained if this level of pain continues? I can’t believe such a tiny thing is stopping me from doing day to day tasks :(

It sounds like yours might have thrombosed. Which could be an emergency and need lancing.
I would suggest seeing your gp, or call 111.
Hemmorids can be painful, but an 8/10 and blue colour as you describe sounds like yours has thrombosed and needs urgent treatment.

i’m a doctor/ surgeon. Thrombosed haemorrhoids don’t generally give you a temperature and once the pile has thrombosed it wouldn’t generally increase rapidly in size.

The initial description did shout thrombosed pile and you’ve have good advice about dealing with thrombosed piles but I’m wondering if you actually hav e a perianal abscess . You need a face to face ( or bottom review asap. GP will refer to surgeons directly to avoid the ED queue. If you can’t get to an urgent care place/ OOH GP go to ED. (Emergency department)

thanks for replying - I’ve woken up feeling a bit unwell with a sore throat so I imagine the temp is viral

a family member has popped over to see me today who is a nurse and has confirmed it’s a thrombosed pile. They couldn’t do anything though except recommend I go get the s named steroid cream from the GP

pain is worse today and the pile feels harder, throbbing. The Anusol has done nothing. Painkillers not working

i feel so down about it. The immediate pain, plans scuppered. I can’t even relax at home in peace as laying down in bed is painful. Vainly struggling with the idea of having a fleshy skin tag on my bumhole as well when it hopefully calms down.

Caved and called NHS 111. Waiting for the out of hours GP to call back. If I can get the stronger stuff prescribed today or ready for tomorrow, that would be ideal. :(

How are you doing now op did the ooo gp get back to you?

ItWasDobbinAtTheMareAndSpare · 15/01/2023 17:29

I know it’s not the top priority, but you can have the skin tag removed privately in the future, should you decide to do that.

meggyhi · 15/01/2023 17:40

Hope you're ok @GoldenCagedBird

Shock at size of a small plum. How awful.

GoldenCagedBird · 15/01/2023 19:02

No news from the GP yet.

I should be called back by 11 tonight.

thanks all for checking in- it’s shit

I’m so sorry it must be agony. GPS where I am will give local anaesthetic and cut them in the surgery there and then. I hope you get some relief soon.

superplumb · 15/01/2023 20:38

Thrombosed (sp) piles are really painful. It's when normal piles fill with blood. The pain does settle after a few days. I found a warm bath with magnesium salt helped

I went through this exact thing within the last month. Had an external pile that wasn’t responding to OTC creams or the stronger prescription steroid creams. Tried to make a gp appointment and was told it would be 6 weeks till I could have an over the phone appointment. I’d already been dealing with ‘Roy’ for a month so wasn’t thrilled at this prospect!

decided to book a private consultation just to find out what exactly was going on, could be done etc. booked it on Wednesday afternoon, was seen on Friday morning, was in ten minutes with the colorectal consultant who told me it was a thrombosed external heamorrhoid and the chances of any of those creams working were next to none due to the clot. He gave it a quick incision and removed the clot. 2 weeks later it has completely gone away. Best £200 I’ve ever spent!

Roy 🤣

Mine was called Gerry Giles 😂

GoldenCagedBird · 15/01/2023 23:12

NHS 111 phoned me to apologise that no one has called me back

still waiting to hear from a doctor- will just need to phone my gp in the morning

the guy told me to ‘enjoy my evening’ 😂

got a call back at 3am which I missed….

managed to get hold of my GP and I have a telephone appointment this morning

pain still severe, the four in one gemaloid hasn’t touched.

it’s hard and pulsating like a mini bollock. It’s horrible.

My GP excised mine twice in his surgery. It is a simple and quick procedure and takes away the pain instantly. GP needs to see it and make a decision.

On one occasion I had a whole "bunch of grapes" of thrombosed piles and I was taken to hospital where they did an anal stretch under general anaesthetic. I have not had the problem since.

PeonyRose80 · 16/01/2023 09:16

Germaloids if super bad, you can call gp surgery for linocane (not sure on spelling) that can help but u have to be really precise with application

I would love them to do this

on the verge of getting dh to do it with a pen knife

I can’t look after my baby.

DH is here and working from home, he’s very flexible but there are about 2 hours of the day which can’t be rescheduled. He took a lot of time off last week when I was recovering from flu and that’s had a knock on effect.

one of those hours are now and I’m just laying on her playmat, I’ve contained her in a sit me up and am just handing her stuff. carrying her is painful and I can’t respond to her quickly when she makes a pass for the cat litter

DH has had piles before and got steroid suppositories and ointment from the GP over the phone. In the meantime he laid on the sofa on his side with an icepack in his bum crack, a warm bath with Epsom salts also helped.

twoandcooplease · 16/01/2023 12:09

Any update from your gp @GoldenCagedBird? I can feel the pain from your posts- really hoping you get some relief

GoldenCagedBird · 16/01/2023 12:42

I managed to get some naproxen, some dulcoease and the scheriproct (?) suppositories but I need to wait until tomorrow to get the ointment as it’s had to ordered in

i feel like a wounded dog. We got returned parcels on the way home from the pharmacy but forgot to collect a box. Shuffled out of the car to the corner shop because some details needed to be pulled out my amazon account.

anyway remembered about the parcel to collect on the way home and was furious as it was all a massive waste of time and dh was like ‘No worries! It’s a lovely day we can go get them later and have a nice walk’

have a nice walk?

are you fucking serious?

I had to scream ‘no, I don’t want to go for a lovely walk- I have a pile the size of plum and I am in constant pain

he’s obviously about to help with DD today but I don’t think he truly understands

he’s usually really caring and marvellous so I’m stuck sulking upstairs.

OP posts:
GoldenCagedBird · 16/01/2023 12:44

was probably made even more worse by the 4 old dears in front of me at the pharmacy who were there to collect prescriptions that didn’t exist and insisted on the pharmacist double checking and running around as I cried

and the broken printer machine in the shop we had to wait for

god when you are in pain tiny annoyances are infuriating

I'm glad you have something at last. Will all of this get rid of it or is that just pain relief and swelling reduction?

I've only ever had internal piles which I've been worried might emerge so I've no idea how you're coping with something external and plum sized!

Scheriproct apparently should shrink them and treat them but I’m waiting on the ointment as they didn’t have it in stock today :( I’m just using the pessaries for now plus the germaloid OTC stuff

Ooh sorry to hear this. I had this after both my children and the memory of that pain actually put me off having any more children. What worked the most for me was not pushing at all when I went to the toilet and just trying to keep all pressure off that area. I hope it gets better soon

I got none of the fuckers when I was pregnant so god knows why this appeared a month later

arse bollock still has a giant blue head

i have taken all of the stuff the doctor prescribed for poo problems but the weird thing is- I don’t have any!!!! I have no pain when going to the toilet nor constipation because it is THAT descended and thrombosed.

It’s just chilling outside. The loo is one of the situations where the fucker doesn’t actually hurt

naproxen has definitely taken the edge off but that makes me slightly worried that they are just going to leave me with the fucker if I’m ‘not in pain’ any more
