Something needs to be done...reports of dog neglect taken more seriously, harsher prison sentences... any other ideas?

Awful, awful way to die, and makes me think twice about passing dogs off lead on walks.

@Alltheprettyseahorses words may fail you but horses can indeed be very dangerous even if not deliberately aggressive. I have owned horses for more than a decade and ridden from 11 months old. I have been around dogs a similar amount of time. I can tell you now I have had far more injuries from horses and more serious injuries from horses than ever from dogs.
I have numerous broken toes, concussions, broken wrist, broken shoulder. I have arthritis as a result of some of these injuries.
Horse riding is a brilliant sport but it is a dangerous one. Hundreds of people are killed or seriously injured by falling off each year. Horse bites are really nasty too. A horse pushing past you in the wrong way can do you serious harm. So yes horses are blooming dangerous!

But dogs don't just kill their owners nor do they live away from society in paddocks like horses do.

If dogs only attacked their owners, that'd be fine.

Sounds like it happened in a public place a with 7 dogs detained I wonder if they were in the care of a dog Walker? Just speculation I know but how bloody awful.

I think she may have been the dog walker

It's not one person being killed by a dog. It's yet another person killed by a dog. At some point the dots will have to be joined and the problem addressed rather than handwringing about the poor doggies. Dogs don't make good pets and they should not be in public places.

As for the poster saying horses are more dangerous, words fail me! People jump over big fences on them and go galloping and fall off, stuff like that. It's vanishingly unlikely that anyone will bump into a pair of marauding shetlands out for blood on the way to the local tesco express. Not so much with dangerous dogs.

Clearly you haven't met many Shitlands.

Lucifer in equine form, I tell you. They'd definitely kill if they could 🤣

Of course have the potential to be more dangerous, as they are bigger and heavier than a dog. However, in general, a horse is less likely to attack a human deliberately. It is usually when you stand in front of them as an escape route, you are holding a leg and something startles them. They are flight creatures. Dogs are not. Horses are bigger than us but rarely attack and kill us. Dogs are significantly smaller than us, but can still attack and kill people.

Notformethankyoukindly No, dogs don't make good pets. Especially not compared to other companion animals which are often far more affectionate too. They are dirty, smelly and, as we see here on yet another thread about someone being killed by one, dangerous.

Tootsey11 · 13/01/2023 17:32

This was a dog walker out with these dogs.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 13/01/2023 17:35

GuyFawkesDay Yep there's a reason I picked that breed. But as long as they're tucked up nicely in their stable and not loitering in the dodgy subway behind the garages they're fine. Maybe they should be the next scally status symbol.

Happy to agree to differ on that one then! Nothing on earth is more affectionate or respectful of me than my Labrador. As the saying goes, the more I know about people, the more I love my dog 😊.

That's an absolutely bonkers comment 😂😂 dogs make amazing companions and friends. My dogs are like my family. Who cares if they get dirty and smelly? So do people.

This could still be tackled though. Hand held microchip scanner - carried by dog wardens (of which there should be thousands, everywhere - parks, school gates, streets - we have loads of people needing jobs). No microchip = dog seized immediately.

And where exactly is the money going to come from to pay for all these thousands of dog wardens?

And do you honestly think that anyone is going to want to head out with their trusty microchip scanner every day to tackle owners of aggressive dogs as described by Kevinyoutwat above.

And yes, of course they're just going to hand over their out of control dogs to some little bloke or woman because they come along wearing a naff uniform and waving a hand held microchip scanner.

More likely they'd have the shit beaten out of them.

Trouble is, even with licences, people wouldn’t bother with them.

Who would police it? There’s little time and resources as it is.

What’s to stop people breeding and buying from friends?

I live in an absolute shithole. The amount of parents at the school who turn up with puppies of breeds that are going to be massive, are known for aggression. They carry them around when they are tiny, and then when they get bigger, they are just dumped in their back gardens to chew all the crap that’s there, bark all day and they complain that they are “little bastards.” Never see a vet and are just passed around from family members to friends when they misbehave too much. They never see a vet. They aren’t insured. They are bred in back gardens. No one knows they exist.

RSPCA only care if the the dog has food and shelter.

I can take my toddler to my local parks. If the drug dealers aren’t bad enough, their dogs are even worse, it’s terrifying.

There are shithole towns and areas like this all over the county filled with scumbags who are only on nodding terms with the law anyway - the talk of dog licences makes me laugh, like they would get one or give a shit.

And no one wants to say that - if you do, you accused of being a snob. But it’s true, I love it everyday, sadly, until we can sell up and get the hell out of here.

Where is this if you don't mind roughly saying? I think many places are like that in the UK, your description is scarily accurate.

I hope you can move soon.

Soothsayer1 · 13/01/2023 17:51

we could say that about any criminal, dont arrest the murderer they might kill you too etc, thankfully your batshit 'reasoning' does not form the basis upon which the law operates!

I think this could be incorporated into a phone app available for the general public to use so that we can all report unchipped dogs

PartySock · 13/01/2023 18:00

This thread is crazy.
Responsible dog owners already comply with a lot of what is suggested- buying from responsible breeders/rescues, dogs kept on lead etc. You can't legislate people out of their own stupidity.

LordSugarTits · 13/01/2023 18:00

I've probably mentioned it 😅

I can't be sure, but I think when murderers etc are arrested it involves a bit more than Nigel on £10 p/h rocking up with a scanner, lead and a muzzle

“You can't legislate people out of their own stupidity.”

love this, so true!!

LordSugarTits · 13/01/2023 18:03

This case sounds like it was a dog walker who drove out of London to get around their rules on maximum number of dogs you can walk (4) to a place that had no limits.

However, the usual story is crap owner in crap place 😏

Megifer · 13/01/2023 18:06

On a similar note I once saw a litter enforcement officer or whatever they are called pull someone up for dropping a cig and they just ran off 😂

Dog licences. Desperate need for them so we can monitor dog ownership. Self-funding scheme so they’re expensive enough that it pays for itself. I live near a local park and since the pandemic it’s just a dog shit hole, and you run the risk of being bowled over by a dog every time you walk there. I was never bothered by dogs before but with so many untrained dogs out there now it’s a nightmare 😢🤬.

Absolutely no point.

I volunteer for a large rescue network working with the public, people who care would buy dog licences and the rest wouldn’t. Nobody has funding to follow up a scheme so why would people bother?

If it’s self funded it’ll price lots out- and that to be blunt means dead dogs. Many with responsible loving owners who are just broke. Seriously. It breaks my heart but the rehoming system is broken, we could always find a space before, now it’s just impossible. Too many dogs in need, not enough people willing to take in an animal and too few able to afford time to foster even if the landlord allows it. The local pound has double the number of inmates because of the people who think a no means just go and release the poor thing up a mountain, and many people are already having their pet PTS because the rescue system has failed them.

Blunt but sadly the truth.

Nobody should be walking a pack of dogs on leads together. One person can't deal with problems that might arise. It's not safe, they're animals not toys and deserve more respect.

Strawberrypicnic · 13/01/2023 18:19

Chow chows are another breed I would like to see fewer of. Status dogs who are huge and aggressive to other dogs
and humans. They are not suitable to be kept in cities and walked round the block!!

A bloody horrible town in the black country.

We did what many posters on mumsnet like to trot out after some very bad luck with redundancy, a serious health issue and our landlord selling up in the same month and moved a hundred miles away to somewhere we could afford to buy rather than claim top up benefits and stay renting in London.

Places like this is where talking that advice gets you!

Of course there are many good people here, but the bad ones, my god, they are in the majority and ruin the place for everyone else.
