Something needs to be done...reports of dog neglect taken more seriously, harsher prison sentences... any other ideas?

Awful, awful way to die, and makes me think twice about passing dogs off lead on walks.

Given how many people are murdered every day by other people I’d like to know why the OP is focusing on dogs and not humans. Humans do revolting and disgusting things to each other day in day out.

What a fatuous argument. People deploring dog attacks aren't condoning human violence by doing so. It's like saying "with all the deaths caused by knives I don't know why we are talking about guns" after a fatal shooting.

WTAF?

Tekkentime · 13/01/2023 15:52

Ban all dogs unless it's for working purposes.

dawngreen · 13/01/2023 15:52

Dogs are like ppl some dogs they don't get on with, and others they do. I never let any one handle my dogs or feed them apart from my other half. I would never let a dog walker walk my dog with strange dogs.

I agree with everything you have said, but is ISDS not just applicable to working collies? My dad's collie was ISDS (40 years ago - things may have changed)

Perhaps we need similar for domestic pet breeds.

No. Any border collie can qualify either by heritage or by "intelligence testing" - not necessarily a traditional working dog. ALl my dogs have been working but not herding dogs - my current dog is actually a service dog now! It is based on either direct close lineage to already registered dogs, or by herding working standards or otherwise demonstrating intelligence through tests. The point of registration is to try to breed in the best characteristics of intelligence regardless of looks. Although Old Hemp shows that there can be outliers - apparently both his parents were useless!

It's a very salubrious area @Soothsayer1 , I doubt if there are many houses round there much under £750k, and there's a big private school near by.
Between where this happened and the Caterham bypass is a huge house, with massive grounds, and there's often a helicopter parked on the lawn.

Oh stop being so bloody dramatic!! People are killed on the roads every day! Should we ban cars too?

I want them banned for a multitude of reasons, not just because they murder people.

yogz1976 · 13/01/2023 15:57

It's rare for a dog to attack a human. Dog-on-dog attacks are very common. I don't walk my dog in the park anymore as too many dogs running around off lead. It's too easy for ppl to get a dog. Most ppl have no clue about dog behaviour or how to control a dog, hence you get tragic incidents like this one.
I would support a ban on off-leash dogs. It's a real problem and needs addressing.

Megifer · 13/01/2023 15:59

All dogs will never be banned. Neither will staffys. So no point in suggesting that as a serious answer, its one designed to rile people up, I get that.

Ah - thanks.

I was brought up with border collies and have always loved them, but a lot of the dogs I meet nowadays seem dodgy re: temperament. Pethomes don't suit all of them.

there are two near us which are a nasty pair and have attacked a few other dogs, including my springer's - she wasn't hurt but was always an anxious dog (don't know what happened to her before we go her - she's terrified of blonde women) and it's destroyed her confidence.

The family had one and shouldn't have got the second IMO, because the first one was fear-aggressive and very unpredictable. The second one is more dangerous because she's very confident but has learned to attack from the first (I would think). The two of them did a lot of damage to a very gentle little whippet, among other dogs. They shouldn't be let off lead but they are.

All dogs are bad for the environment….I’m not sure why it’s so rarely mentioned.

Yes, those damn dogs, driving round in their gas-guzzling cars, living in massive historic houses that need tons of gas to heat them, taking long haul flights and using bog roll that's not made from recycled paper... it's clearly them that are responsible for global warming.

Agree - and not many dogs are properly socialised now.

whereaw · 13/01/2023 16:06

I mean, anyone who denies that the breed is a significant factor because 'it's about the owner' misses the point. Most dogs don't attack but if and when things go wrong some breeds are capable of causing MUCH more damage than others. That's just a fact.

My father has dogs who have the potential to cause harm - due to breed type and being rescues. He would never let them off the lead in a public place.

It sounds as if this poor lady might have been a dog walker.

They were very cheap 7/6d in old money (72.5p) and were scrapped in 1988 as more expensive to administer and didn't actually contribute any benefits to the welfare of dogs

37.5p actually!

They were so irrelevant that even my very law-abiding parents didn't bother getting one.

whereaw · 13/01/2023 16:09

On that point though, fellow dog walkers, if you see dogs on a lead, don't let your unleashed dogs go up to them!!

Is the Uk really that bad? I'm in Ireland and the only off-lead dogs I come across when I am walking mine are the ones pottering along beside their owners paying no attention to anything. I walk twice a day every day with my dogs and have never had a dog come running up to me or my dogs. We do have slightly different rules here than the UK in that some breeds have to muzzled when out in pubic and controlled by someone over the age of 16 on a short lead but I rarely see any of the dogs that are on that list, the most common is probably German Shephard.

This is just horrific for all concerned. More has to be done to protect animals against neglect and abuse. I'm just guessing that these dogs weren't someone's little Fifi. Licences wouldn't make an difference, we had to all get passports for our horses many years ago, at a cost, its illegal to own or sell one without a passport. Certain elements of society still do though 😡

Railwayroad · 13/01/2023 16:19

IF this poor woman was a dog Walker, she definitely shouldn’t be walking 7 at a time.

justgettingthroughtheday · 13/01/2023 16:20

@Tekkentime your welcome to bugger off somewhere else then! At no stage will dogs ever be banned in the UK! Thank god!

HisRoyalWhineness · 13/01/2023 16:21

I have seen dog walkers recently walking enormous groups of dogs, either on their own or in pairs, they will have 3/4/5 leads in each hand. Obviously, it is more financially beneficial, but I do really worry about what happens when the dogs go for each other, or when they are off lead and harass other dogs. I think these group walks should definitely be limited.

I wondered if that was why she had a friend walking with her - maybe she was just insured for (say) 5, and if she took more had to increase the person/dog ratio. Perhaps the friend was also a casual employee?

Absolutely dreadful thing to happen.
