How much do you have in your savings account?

Just that, really. I am trying to save up for some big expenses (house renovations) but I am worried about blowing up the majority of my savings and starting from scratch again.

About £1200. My mum passed away in 2020 and I was fortunate to receive a large inheritance of about £80k. I paid off my credit card and £50k off our mortgage, about half the total owed. £5k each into a saving account for my 2 kids and virtually all the rest went into some major renovations for the house. Part of me worries that it really isn’t much left but I’ve never had any savings anyway and DH has a good sum saved away if we need it. I think mum would be happy with how it’s been used.

£25 million. I bid to supply PPE and sent them a few pairs of gloves in the post.

Well done Michelle. We need more entrepreneurs like you.

And how does knowing what random strangers have in their bank accounts going to help you?

Can't believe people are actually responding to these ridiculous threads.

SheSellSeaShells · 10/01/2023 18:02

£4.51 haha I got married in August so it got emptied, then Christmas and school residentials etc. meant I've not put anything in since. Mortgage just gone up again too so not much left end of month to save atm ☹️

Chikapu · 10/01/2023 18:03

I can't actually believe people are telling you the exact amount of money they have. How is that helpful to you?

You see, every time it all seems hopeless, some wit posts a comment like this and makes it all worthwhile 😀

CeriB82 · 10/01/2023 18:06

I had over £10k. Then my tenants moved out and left a mess. New kitchen/bathroom/carpets/painting etc. dirty bastards. Now down to my last £1k after estate agent fees etc to seek a new tenant,

Dinosaurpoopy · 10/01/2023 18:08

6k, DH has 15k

Yorkshiredolls · 10/01/2023 18:10

£650. I want to be able to save more for holidays and kids futures but a large chunk goes on nursery fees DS at the moment. Roll on 30 free hours in April and then school, it will make a massive difference for us, hopefully ill be able to put £200-300 a month away and Hubby similar

Coffeetree · 10/01/2023 18:10

I love the idea of setting up a reminder for the day before payday, telling yourself to move any leftover money into savings. Phenomenal idea! Stealing that immediately.

Sherbetdib · 10/01/2023 18:12

Am amazed that so many have so much in savings.
Totally get those who haven't anything, or modest amounts.
Am stunned.

GrinAndVomit · 10/01/2023 18:13

£1300

We had £50,000 at the beginning of October but we bought our first home and bought all new everything.

I’ve never been so happy to be so poor!

Girasoli · 10/01/2023 18:13

5% deposit on a flat/small house. Hoping to get it up to 10% over the next 2 years (by then interests rates will have hopefully calmed down)

Goosefatroasts · 10/01/2023 18:14

£2.02 to be precise.

LuckeyBuoy · 10/01/2023 18:14

Quite a lot, and it's not doing anything very useful.

bowlingalleyblues · 10/01/2023 18:15

It’s not in a savings account but about 30k which is for taxes I need to pay, emergency fund (in case I can’t work - self employed), savings for house repairs and new boiler and £1000 for a holiday.

Lovemusic33 · 10/01/2023 18:15

£1500 😬

Hellno44 · 10/01/2023 18:16

£2.95 in the savings account
0.11 in the ISA

proper skint.

JPR15 · 10/01/2023 18:16

None.

If we need any extra help for car services etc our parents help us.

Hopefully we can start saving in a few years when I return to work!

JPR15 · 10/01/2023 18:17

However, our 2 year old has more than a few thousand already thanks to GPs! 😁

BarrelOfOtters · 10/01/2023 18:18

Savings equivalent to 4 months before tax salary. I’d like to get that up to a full year’s worth in 2 years time. Very low outgoings at moment after a few years of hammering the savings for a house renovation.

but am being tempted by going travelling in far east for 3 weeks.

im due to retire in 5 or 6 years and I want a nice buffer so I can go a bit early.

Coffeetree · 10/01/2023 17:44

You mean cash? Is there a particular reason you don't want to use a bank? I'm just curious!

Yup, cash!
If it’s in the bank then it'll get spent. Not on frivolous stuff - there's always a bill or something that crops up. It's my secret savings that no-one knows about.
If I have to then I break into it (hence going from £500 down to £200).
I just feel better having a little put away that no-one knows about so no-one can ask for it.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/01/2023 18:19

thunderstruckk · 10/01/2023 16:08

About five times my annual salary. Mainly because we save my salary and live on DHs (classic mumsnet cliche high earner) and save his bonuses (apart from for our holiday spending) plus several unfortunate inheritances in the last few years.

Good God.

It seems unbelievable to me that some people are able to live this way
