How much do you have in your savings account?

Just that, really. I am trying to save up for some big expenses (house renovations) but I am worried about blowing up the majority of my savings and starting from scratch again.

Just under £22,000.

I never feel like I have enough savings. saving for me is defo addictive especially if I have big goals to save for.

I think ideally I would have full holdings on premium bonds (£50,000)

I don't have a savings account. £3 something in main account.

£755.

I have just bought a house with my partner, so all of my money have been spent on the deposit, legal fees and a home survey etc. I’m able to save a little under £100 a month from this month onwards, though. Should give me a little cushion for emergencies

Ours is split across different places. DH has about 6 months of his salary saved in his ISA, I have about 3 months of my salary saved in my S&S ISA.

Then we both hold premium bonds which we use as longer term savings. We did have about £30k in them but had some work done on the house so that's been really diminished.

Then a general, joint savings account for things like Christmas, holidays, bigger spending. We aim to always have one month of our combined salaries in that account and not let it get below that amount.

Essentially, we want the security of knowing that if one of us lost our jobs we could cover the bills for a few months as happened when DH was made redundant in 2020.

£480.

Does anyone find the more you have saved up, the less you want to spend?
My parents have £400k in savings, from inheritance 20 years ago. My parents had very little money saved before that (even though dad was quite a high earner) but since getting the inheritance he won’t spend a penny on anything. It just sits there building up, they go nowhere and do nothing.

Yes, it’s a weird thing but true for me. Except for when it comes to DD, then we spend whatever on her, neither of us care what the other spends either but I would say I’m more cautious now. Might just be a getting older thing too.

we have 100k in premium bonds, mortgage free and 4k in current account we had emptied out our accounts a couple of years ago to pay off mortgage.

99p.

Am in a position to start building it up again soon but tbh we've got a lot of house renovations to complete which are priority.

In general I would like a buffer of about £500 but it was wiped out by Xmas and roof repairs.

I'm just quoting myself as exactly six months after I posted, I now have £4315 in savings.

I'm absolutely made up, we struggled for so long that it feels really good to have this money available.

Of course, £3k of that was supposed to be for having a toilet under the stairs fitted - but presumably the bathroom fitter changed his mind as he hasn't been in touch since April and was supposed to be here doing it now Hmm.

Allhailkingcharlie · 10/07/2023 19:31

About £7k. Paying nursery fees and cost of everything going up just isn't helping us at the moment.

Lapland123 · 10/07/2023 19:33

Savings account 😂😂😂

It seems money comes in, money goes out- whatever we earn

Franticbutterfly · 10/07/2023 19:37

Enough to pay for my university fees next year.

I'm a single parent who works. I saved £100 a month where possible since leaving my ex.

Its not a huge amount but feel reassured I have some savings if anything happens

Augustus40 · 11/07/2023 06:22

It is cars that can really drain the money. But these days it would seem everything drains the bank account! So grateful that I sold my car as no longer needed.

WaddleAway · 11/07/2023 10:09

Cars may ‘drain’ money, but without my car I couldn’t get to work to earn any money, so it’s swings and roundabouts really.

Well done you as it is really hard to save for many single parents.

Piscesmumma1978 · 11/07/2023 11:42

£1k. That's my Christmas fund. I save £200 a month. I have been in a lot of debt so I'm not spending anything I don't need to now. It's hard but I know I can afford Christmas without credit cards x

Piscesmumma1978 · 11/07/2023 11:43

Ps I use premium bonds as my savings account. You can't access it immediately and you can win. I won £50 not long ago x
