...lantern?

Getting married in autumn next year.
I'm not really a flowers sort of person and wedding flowers are bloody expensive!

The room we are having the ceremony in is quite dimly lit apart from a massive chandelier.

Colour scheme is going to be grey/silver and the only centerpieces and other decor we are having will be candles.

Too weird?
Am I just being tight about the flowers?

I don't think it would work.
I think some dried flowers in autumnal colours would look better.

Florence Nightingale or Catholic priest waving a censer about.

I’d rather make my own flowers if I were you, I think.

This is a good point if it's a civil ceremony. Might be worth checking it's not seen as a religious thing.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 10/01/2023 07:51

Well, it's different, but I think it would be great. If the venue is dimly lit, it's practical and will be atmospheric.
It's your wedding though, your day - do what you want, don't listen to anyone else. You don't want to be remembering the day in years to come and thinking "I wish I'd carried a lantern instead of those flowers....."

It's your wedding & your call but there's so many beautiful autumn flowers available & they definitely don't need to be expensive.
I've recently seen pictures of bridesmaids carrying small pumpkins!

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 10/01/2023 07:53

Have you a particular lantern in mind, OP?

Bray Wyatt the wrestler does this as his ring entrance

🤣🤣 that's not the look I'm going for but am probably closer to that than the spooky elf from LOTR

The light coming from wrong direction is a VERY good point and not something I had considered.

I admire the people who sort their own flowers but I think it would just give me extra stress.

OK so maybe a lantern isn't the way to go. Thanks for your thoughts.

you can get beautiful autumn decorations.
i cant imagine a lantern

romdowa · 10/01/2023 07:55

I got a fake bouquet in the range for maybe 13 quid for my wedding and it looked perfect. I can't have real flowers due to hay-fever . I think a lantern might look a bit odd

RewildingAmbridge · 10/01/2023 07:55

I think Bray Wyatt is great, don't let that put you off! Just don't blow it out and leave the room in darkness when you get to the altar 😁

icelollycraving · 10/01/2023 07:56

Is it just the cost? It might look a bit spooky, dimly lit venue and long white dress. Like the ghost of weddings past.
Is a lantern something that holds a religious meaning?
If it’s cost, I’d be more inclined to buy flowers and do a simple posy.

Newwardrobe · 10/01/2023 07:56

A lantern might look a bit clonky, what about pine cones

Not sure about lanturn I would be scared of setting myself on fire 🔥 but it's your wedding if you want a lantern have a lantern don't let anyone put you off it's your day do what make you happy.
For my own wedding I brought fake flowers and made all the bouquets myself cost me £50 to make 6 bouquets and 30 button holes. No one noticed I'd made them myself and got lots of lovely comments about them.
Saved me over £300 doing it myself.

Batterball · 10/01/2023 07:58

Go onto Pinterest and type in alternative wedding bouquet. There’s literally 100’s of ideas on there from wedding hoops to see through handbags filled with feathers to paper flower bouquets.

HelloYourself · 10/01/2023 07:58

I think it would be weird. You're not a flowery kind of person, are you a lanterny kind of person? I'd get some white flowers and some pussy willow which is good for autumn and can look silvery and have a simple homemade arrangement.

VenusClapTrap · 10/01/2023 08:01

I was going to say it’s a lovely idea, but the weird light effects are a good point. You don’t want Blair Witch vibes.

Have you got a creative friend or family member who could make a posy for you if you’d find it too stressful? I arrived at SiL’s destination wedding in the middle of French nowhere and she asked me to make her a bouquet out of wild flowers from around the venue. I’m no florist and was a bit 😯, but actually it was fun to do and if I do say so myself, they looked beautiful!

itsgettingweird · 10/01/2023 08:01

I think that sounds great.

I love things that away from tradition!

hoppityscotch · 10/01/2023 08:02

If you want a lantern then go for it

Maybe paper flowers?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/01/2023 08:03

Yes, but if it is something like the picture I suggest you pop it in a wheelbarrow.

I’d not carry anything, or get a lovely clutch bag

HelloYourself · 10/01/2023 08:05

Eucalyptus is also quite silvery and inexpensive. You could have that with white flowers and it would be beautiful.

garlicandsapphires · 10/01/2023 08:06

It could look great, very pre Raphelite, but as others have said might not look so good in photos.
Personally I think it would be a shame to miss out on flowers. I had an autumn wedding and had some gorgeous dark flowers. It needn’t be expensive either.

Blogswife · 10/01/2023 08:07

I’m having trouble visualising a lantern but I think it could look lovely . Good point about the lighting though .
If making a bouquet yourself fills you with stress how about carrying a single long stemmed rose or calla lily ?

CaramelMach · 10/01/2023 08:08

Unless it was late in the afternoon in the winter with a candle lit venue I think it's a bit odd - personally.
You don't have to have to carry anything

Oh my God! I've got an awful image there! 😱 Can't get it out of my head now.

Batterball · 10/01/2023 08:08

Battery operated warm fairy lights are an option for the lantern rather than a candle also.
I’m fairly sure Martha Stewart weddings has done an article on non flower bouquet substitutes.
