If you love, love your cup of tea (proper one !) but had had to go 24 hours without caffeine for a medical procedure what herbal tea would you recommend?

DM ...84 has a cuppa all day long !

Procedure says no caffeine drinks 24 hours beforehand.

DS mentioned about getting her decaff tea but I think that still has some caffeine in it ?

I googled and came up with herbal alternative.
She does like a sit down with a hot drink .

What would you recommend ?
What does camomile taste like ?

Or should I just go for a fruit tea ?

So what to help her !
Thanks .

If she needs to avoid caffeine she needs to avoid chocolate too.
Decaf tea for me I drank boatload when pregnant I don't think there is any caffeine in it I think maybe you are thinking of alcohol free drinks that has a teeny bit of alcohol in them?

Verbena87 · 08/01/2023 18:42

Not green or white tea - both have caffeine!

redbush tea you can drink with milk like tea-tea. It tastes different but it’s nice and sort of savoury/cosy rather than fruity or herby.

Just a warning - suddenly cutting out caffeine completely can cause the most horrendous migraine-type headaches, as I discovered the hard way. When I did this, it took me nearly a week to realize that the sudden debilitating headaches i started getting every afternoon had anything to do with the change in my drinking habits.

If at all possible, your DM would do best to start cutting out caffeine gradually, at least a week before the procedure. Reintroducing caffeinated drinks at breakfast time only for a week or so before cutting them out completely again worked for me.

If you only drink real tea, they will all be horrible. Herbal teas are no substitute unless you sort of wean yourself onto them.

She may need to reduce her caffiene for a few weeks or she'll get one hell of a withdrawal headache. Perhaps move to caffeine free tea from lunchtime and progress from there?

this is true about caffeine withdrawal, it can be a really awful headache!

greenacrylicpaint · 08/01/2023 18:45

if for medical reasons careful with giner/tumeric that contain black pepper.
better check if that's suitable as it can have a (small) effect on the liver.

Chai which I believe is caffeine free, and is lovely with or without milk.
Pukka three camomile
Camomile and spiced apple
Be wary of green teas as they do have caffeine.

The main ingredient in chai is black tea leaves, so it definitely has caffeine. But you can get a vanilla chai or similar which doesn't have the black tea in.

barelyfunctional · 08/01/2023 18:52

For those saying chai, it does generally contain caffeine as it has black tea in it! I’m sure you can buy versions without but you’d have to check the ingredients as standard chai will contain tea.

When I want a caffeine free tea I go for rooibos

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 08/01/2023 18:53

Roiboos

I can't drink caffeine due to a condition so I drink this on the daily.

Love it.

Yorkshire Tea’s Bedtime Brew. Lovely.

NoHeavenNoMore · 08/01/2023 18:54

Definitely redbush. It's good with milk too!!

StillWeRise · 08/01/2023 19:01

I have to say I am a serious tea drinker and do not like redbush

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 08/01/2023 19:05

I would be careful with herbal teas.

Turmeric is not recommended before surgery, so maybe just some mint or camomile.

bizzey · 08/01/2023 19:08

Thank you all .
I have had redbush before ( I forgot about that one !)
And it would be the best alternative to a herbal which physiologicaly would not be a cuppa !

Think it is too late to do the reduction as procedure is Wednesday.
But by lunch time Wednesday she will be enjoying a wonderful hospital cafe cuppa !

Though good point about reducing her caffeine intake .

I have just realised I am caffeine addicted to my cuppa as I just had to make one to read this thread 😂

I will check with hospital but you have all been so helpful.
Thank you ...bizzey and her DM !

Red bush, almost as close to a real cuppa. If you DM likes fruity teas twining a do a lovely raspberry and lemon one. Or fennel tea, but it does make you pee a lot more!

SuperHandss · 08/01/2023 19:13

Womankind from Pukka is delicious

bizzey · 08/01/2023 19:13

Sorry ..I am back again!
Tetley Redbush is coming up on my search .
Is that good...or the other one?

bizzey · 08/01/2023 19:19

I am doing Occado order...and both are coming up .

OP posts:
bizzey · 08/01/2023 19:20

Ohh ...I will just order both !

It is a heart issue she is going in for .
Maybe a reduction of caffeine would work all round !

Rooibus and red bush are the same thing so you could search for both.
