Loveliest place in the U.K.?

There have been a couple of threads recently about places that you want to get out of as quickly as possible - Newport, Stevenage, etc!
It got me thinking, which towns do live up to expectations? Where is the perfect U.K.-topia?

I do love the Cotswolds but my heart lies with a tiny village on the Essex/Suffolk border called Dedham. I lived there for about 5 years when I was a child but still have so many lovely memories of it. I don't get to visit as much as I would like but did manage a weekend away with friends there last year for the Jubilee weekend. Our friends also fell in love with Dedham and Flatford Mill and we are hoping to have a weekend away again this year.

We love Dedham. Such a lovely little village. Hadleigh is wonderful too. We are lucky to live close by.

We visited the Lake District in Oct and were blown away how lovely it was.

Ooh I love where I live, pretty villages, rolling countryside, near Oxford so great for arts and culture, and international food, culture and vibes and the M4 so easy access everywhere to London, major airports and absolutely no traffic, few cars so easy to park everywhere, free parking outside shops. Low crime. Endless footpaths and bridleways, wild swimming spots, and where everyone has dogs and horses. Excellent state schools, pubs, leisure centres and GP surgery. Heaven on earth 😍

Not necessarily the "loveliest" place, but where I live in Cornwall isn't too shabby.

Red Point near Gairloch. (The best beach ever)

Iona (calm and serene)

Jollofrice · 08/01/2023 11:34

Nice list

A small cove on the Devon coast - my secret as I'd hate it to get over run with people.

The very end of Cornwall is gorgeous as is Snowdonia, both a bit too isolated for me to live there though.

Goring/Pangbourne are somewhere I've always fancied living - George Micheal lived in Goring and it's lovely there. But more realistically I like Marlborough, Hungerford, Winchester - not too big but fairly central for everything in the South.

I’m not far from Hungerford, I have friend who lived on the same road as George Michael. Every time someone visited they would say ‘oooh, just saw George getting home/going out!’
my friend never saw him once in the years they were neighbours!

Fearnecuptea · 08/01/2023 11:50

Absolute favourite places:

Arisaig, Isle of Eigg (Scotland)
St David's in Wales
Lake District
Ilfacombe
Dartmoor
Some of the beaches around Dorset (I forget the names 🫠)
Brecon Beacons

I wasn't too into Tenby, it was just kind of "meh". Surrey Hills can be quite nice, some good camping and picnic spots.

Im sure I've missed off loads of areas...

Vellan Dreath

(But don't tell anyone).

Sounds like a Star Wars villain 😆

Squirrelsnut · 08/01/2023 11:51

I live on the edge of the Cotswolds and most places around are ridiculously lovely. I do feel lucky to live somewhere so pleasant.
Personally though, Cambridge is my real happy place.

dottiedodah · 08/01/2023 11:54

Alnwick

Somethingsnappy · 08/01/2023 12:02

The Yorkshire dales, particularly Swaledale, Northumberland, the Durham dales. But my heart will always belong to the North West Coast of Scotland.

I certainly can 😊

No, really keep a secret….?

’Yes!’

‘Keep it even when it really hurts to keep it secret?’

’Yes!!!’

’Well, so can I!’

Can’t remember what book that was from…. Terry Pratchett?

RiverSkater · 08/01/2023 12:08

The Nothumberland Coast for me, just stunning.

Also Lake District, and Surrey Hills and the views from Windy Tower - officially Leith Hill but I'm sure it was the inspiration fir the cartoon version!

Some of the villages in Kent and Suffolk are proper chocolate box pretty.

Does anybody ever virtual travel using Google Earth? I do whenever someone mentions a great place to visit, either in the UK or overseas. You can get a sense of somewhere doing this.

Yes, I’ve traveled all over the world especially during lockdown!

Moonlightdust · 08/01/2023 13:02

I just love the Peak District.

Awoooga · 08/01/2023 13:06

Absolutely, any time I watch something like Grand Designs Australia or those Incredible Homes programmes in particular, I always look the locations up.

Anywhere with mountains! I grew up in Snowdonia and it’s beautiful, I miss living there so much!… But I have lived in the Lakes District for 10yrs now and that is so beautiful too.

What is it like living in the Lake District? I would love to but worry about growing older somewhere remote (I appreciate there are towns but it's not close to a city which I have always done)?

Ticktockwoof · 08/01/2023 15:30

Oh this all makes me feel very happy.
