Loveliest place in the U.K.?

There have been a couple of threads recently about places that you want to get out of as quickly as possible - Newport, Stevenage, etc!
It got me thinking, which towns do live up to expectations? Where is the perfect U.K.-topia?

The variety here makes us so lucky to live in the UK.

Emelene · 08/01/2023 09:49

I live in Dorset near Wimborne and Poole and I absolutely love it.

ShowOfHands · 08/01/2023 09:53

Where do you mean by "the Staithes" op? Brancaster and Burnham Overy? Or do you mean the Burnhams in general?

It's interesting because I live in N Norfolk and have done since I was little (but moved away for my teens and twenties) and am now pretty much unmoved by most of Norfolk. I yearn to live in Scotland. I wonder if the places I think are stunning in Scotland are inhabited by people desperate to live in Norfolk.

Is the difference living in a place versus visiting a place when on holiday? Somebody mentioned Wells for example. I grew up a stone's throw from Wells and we had a beach hut there. We still go there regularly to sea swim. It's really not the place it was and has some real issues. Not sure you'd pick up on any of this as a tourist though.

Goodgrief82 · 08/01/2023 09:56

Oh and different to where I live and love is my second favourite place on earth…. London.

The Golden Valley

The North Norfolk Staithes

East Devon

But the best place of all will remain a secret. A small valley a mile in length, with a market town on a hill, running down to the sea. Everywhere in the UK is yours, but not this place.

Clovelly?

@HariKris my in-laws live there, so I'm lucky enough to visit a few times a year. Even the little town of Market Harborough, not far from there is pleasant and quaint. I love going for coffee thereSmile

Yes, then a drive over to Rutland Water for a walk round Hambleton peninsula then lunch in the Finches Arms. Medbourne is a delightful village. A couple of years ago I drove through just before Christmas. There was snow on the ground, lights everywhere and the kids were coming out of school and heading up to the sweet shop. Just like a Christmas card.

Clovelly?

It's Velan Dreath @HariKris has already revealed upthread.

NewLife2023 · 08/01/2023 10:05

Morayshire and Nairnshire and probably my favourite.

Northumberland coast.

I do love the Cotswolds but they are just so small and busy compared to other places.

Yorkshire Dales. I was recently pleasantly surprised how beautiful the Airedale valley was up towards Skipton. I'd only been more rural in the Dales before. And agree with pp about Saltaire.

TellMeWhere · 08/01/2023 10:07

In terms of pure beauty, it will be somewhere in Scotland. Stunning place, especially when the sky is the right amount of moody. Loved it there.

I also like York and Cambridge for towns.

Agree Saltaire has a great balance of nice to convenient.

HariKris · 08/01/2023 10:08

Does anybody ever virtual travel using Google Earth? I do whenever someone mentions a great place to visit, either in the UK or overseas. You can get a sense of somewhere doing this.

AhoyMaBuoy · 08/01/2023 10:13

Lovely thread @Ticktockwoof , I'm going to have a busy afternoon on Google

fairtrauchled · 08/01/2023 10:15

Glencoe

DottieUncBab · 08/01/2023 10:15

Bradford on Avon
North Devon

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 08/01/2023 10:17

Tresco on the Scilly Isles. The sea is absolutely freezing though.

HariKris · 08/01/2023 08:56

Here you go. For a romantic getaway.

I give you Wishbone but the Malvern's one not the Cotswold's property of a similar name.

I'm about to book a break for my DH and I. Thank you for sharing.

WorriedMillie · 08/01/2023 10:17

Northumberland ❤️

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 08/01/2023 10:17

Not Tresco!! Bryher I meant! Tresco is nice but a ghetto for rich tourists.

izzywizzywont · 08/01/2023 10:18

robin hoods bay. also lindisfarne. also staithes.

Curledupwithagoodbook · 08/01/2023 10:27

The Scottish coast from Thurso all the way West along the top. The most beautiful part of the UK for me.

Skye, the road through Glen Devon, Barra, the Northumberland beaches, the Cowal peninsula, there are so many.

That said, I adore these places in winter but wouldn't visit in summer because we don't like anywhere busy.

HariKris · 08/01/2023 10:28

In that case can I recommend if you do go there the following;

The Kettle Sings for afternoon tea, or even breakfast.

Malvern Hills Hotel for sustenance after a long walk, the range of the Malvern Hills.

HariKris · 08/01/2023 10:31

Also, Cornwall is brilliant January / February. Marazion. Flight over to the Scilly Isles, boat back. Nothing like a bit of sea air to get the toxins out of our bodies after Christmas. I recall one year having a barbeque at the little pub at the bottom of Cadgwith. Fresh sea food direct from the boat 20 feet away.

Saltaire in Bradford
loads going on, much cheaper than ilkley or Harrogate, feels like a lovely village but train lines to Leeds and Manchester and a stones throw from the gorgeous yorkshire dales.
its a world heritage site and has the biggest Hockney collection/wonderful mill/art gallery

Love that neck of the woods too.

I've stayed a couple of times at a beautiful cottage in Stanbury, a couple of miles from Haworth...for me it really is heaven on earth.

I live in a town which, on the rare occasions it is mentioned on MN, is fairly heavily criticised. Once it reached the dizzy heights of ‘okay’.

You know what, it’s a nice place to live. Not gobsmackingly expensive, perfectly good schools, a reasonable selection of shops (though not the sort of trendy ones MN would approve of), pleasant non-chain cafes, some of the best weather in the country, and an accessible sea front that is several miles long.

I grew up in the kind of area that’s seen as fabulous. That was a nice place to live too.

Eastbourne?

Orangebadger · 08/01/2023 10:53

Ohgoodyanotherone · 08/01/2023 09:01

But for the traffic, Bradford-on-Avon is beautiful.

Agree. Bradford upon Avon is gorgeous and the surrounding countryside.

Glencoe

One of the most stunning places on earth.
