Is it possible to take after a grandparent?

I know you inherit your genes from your parents of course. But how much if your personality / genetic make up comes from your grandparents?

I ask because my grandad had a rather distinct personality and I'm very like him in a lot of ways so it made me wonder

My nephew looks exactly the same as my Dad did as a child. It’s insanely creepy 🤣

GlitteryShinyShit · 06/01/2023 21:57

I like nothing like my mum or dad but spit of my dad's sister. My son looks like my brother (even matching mannerisms at certain age). It's all incredibly weird.

GlitteryShinyShit · 06/01/2023 21:57

**look not like

elastamum · 06/01/2023 21:58

My son looked exactly like my father did as a child. I found an old picture of my dad and it could have easily been DS.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 06/01/2023 22:04

My DS has inherited a double crown from his grandma. I'd never heard/seen one before and it looks so cool in his dark brown hair. Literally 2 spirals on his head

spinachmonster · 06/01/2023 22:04

I read an article years ago that said you could have a child who is genetically like your dad and your partners mum had a baby (or equivalent). 🤯 Not sure how accurate that is.

My friend says her eldest daughter is an exact replica of her mother in law! (I've not met the MIL but my friend and her daughter don't look alike at all to me.)

pinneddownbytabbies · 06/01/2023 22:06

Yes I think so. My dd is artistic, and she gets that from her aunt on one side of the family and a great-aunt on the other. Nobody else in the family is remotely talented in that way.

Clawdy · 06/01/2023 22:08

My daughter looks uncannily like DH's mother, and my son is incredibly like my father. They are both delighted with the resemblance, and I find it very moving, as their grandparents died when they were small, and they never really knew them.

HermioneWeasley · 06/01/2023 22:08

One of my grandmothers was stunningly beautiful. The other was pretty, but had scoliosis and was very pear shaped. She was also fabulously musical and amazing at hand crafts like sewing.

guess what I inherited? None of the stunning beauty (I look like my dad!) a wonky spine, a fat arse, can’t carry a tune in a bucket and can’t sew in a straight line. I lost the genetic lottery!

KitchenDiscos · 06/01/2023 22:10

DD has DM’s personality, confidence, life & soul of the party etc. Her lovely thick hair. Her mischievous sense of humour. Both Scorpios and I wouldn’t cross either of them! DD also, weirdly, looks a lot like my great-grandmother, her great, great grandmother. You’d think the genes would dilute somewhat when you go that far back, but in the (very few, black & white) photos I’ve seen, they have the same smile, eyes, cheekbones and jaw. Genes are awesome.

I look NOTHING like my Dad but am told by the whole family I am very like his mother in character, my grandmother died 20 yrs before I was born so I never met her.

Same here! It's very weird.

I take after my great-grandmother apparently (She died when I was very very young). Very creative, use our initiative, homely and tradwife-y. She was and I am a fierce feminist, stubborn as anything and wary of all. But complete pushovers when children are involved. I have her nose, and her thick, almost platinum blonde hair. We moved in with our partners and got married at the same age (I didn't know at the time), both left work (similar jobs) to be housewives at the same age and have had a lot of coincidences like that.

I'm nothing like my parents, siblings or even grandparents. Just very her.

TheRubyRedshoes · 06/01/2023 23:26

Well according to my pills 100% all the good ttaits!

TheBirdintheCave · 06/01/2023 23:32

Yeah sure :) I'm a near identical copy of my mum in looks (especially in our teen years) and she in turn looks just like her great aunt Eva... but in personality I am basically my grandma 😂

My son got his strawberry blonde hair from my grandma.

ChaToilLeam · 06/01/2023 23:33

I have seen a picture of my mother’s great-grandmother as a young woman and the resemblance is astonishing. And although I don’t have my paternal grandmother’s face, I absolutely share her build and love of clothes and jewellery. I still have her fake leopard coat.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2023 23:35

I had quite a realisation when my grandfather's personality was being described at his funeral. I think it's something I've inherited through environment rather than genes though.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 06/01/2023 23:36

Very much so-looking at photos of my Gran can be like looking on a mirror for me, and I have a lot of her personality traits too, although my dad had them too. My son is basically my dad in younger form-again looks and personality. Very strong genes!

AffIt · 07/01/2023 01:40

My cousin's daughter looks far more like me and is much closer to me in temperament and personality than my niece.

Genes are funny things.

AffIt · 07/01/2023 01:46

Additionally, I am the living spit of my late paternal grandmother, as was my late father - we are basically three generations of the male and female versions of each other.

Only as I enter my 40s can you see a few slight traces of my mother round the edges - she herself has said that if she hadn't been there when she gave birth to me she might have wondered... 😄

Pelo22 · 07/01/2023 01:52

My cousin was the absolute image of my grandad, we recreated a photo of my grandad with my cousin and it was crazy

Tamarindtree · 07/01/2023 01:54

I grew up with the general belief that girls took after their maternal grandmothers and that’s fairly accurate in my family.

lemmein · 07/01/2023 01:57

Bagsundermyeyestoday · 06/01/2023 20:59

My son is like a miniature version of my dad, it's almost disturbing.
One thing that was very strange is we went overseas to meet some of my dads cousins, they had never met each other before. They were so similar personality wise, even down to their sense of humour. Genes are weird!

They really are!

My DD is the double of my cousin - she looks like her, sounds like her - even laughs exactly the same, but she's never met her and I look nothing like my cousin 🤷🏻‍♀️

1982mommaof4 · 07/01/2023 07:47

Personality wise I am nothing like my mum ( never met my father so I'm not sure) I am very much like my mama

cushioncovers · 07/01/2023 07:48

Absolutely
