Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

@Hoowhoowho Nice to hear good things about Newport. I don't live far from it and it definitely has good points and beautiful parks. And Tredegar House and the Wetlands. I mean there are horrible bits, like anywhere, but it does have positives too.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/01/2023 16:55

@stbrandonsboat - I don't like the vibe in North wales either.

Peterborough. I lived there for 2 years and hated every second, now when we go back to visit in laws I feel uncomfortable and down the whole time. The whole city is awful

I was about to say Peterborough. Felt very uneasy wandering around the town on a Saturday afternoon. Rough.

Also Hemel. Makes Stevenage look fancy in comparison.

MorrisZapp · 06/01/2023 16:56

Durham, surprisingly.

My hometown has been mentioned a few times. I don’t mind, it’s just peoples opinions isn’t it?

I just think it's fucking miserable and it doesn't achieve anything. You've already had posters come on to defend their town and say that there are nicer parts of their town that they didn't see.

@TheBelmont same for me I don't like Brighton , doesn't help that when I was a teen I ended up out in the middle of the night there with a really seedy drug crowd of mostly adults (long story) , I went back to the aquarium with my children the summer just gone and I couldn't wait to leave !

I have to agree with you about Brighton, it's always had a weird vibe to it, it also feels like the whole place has never grown up..

There’s some terrible seaside leisure park area near Brean next to Burnham on Sea that wasn’t very nice at all as I recall. Worst holiday ever.

I've been there. Massive waterslide place. It was eye opening.

JamSandle · 06/01/2023 16:57

Northampton wasn't very nice either.

Picklewicklepickle · 06/01/2023 16:57

Stalybridge. I had a boyfriend there for a while and just found it so dark and depressing (and I lived in Stockport at the time!).

My home city is mentioned here and I’m not offended, it is a shithole. Lots of places are.

Derbee · 06/01/2023 16:57

I’ve always hated Bristol. Avoid it as much as possible.

Grim and money deprived - Stockport shocked me

I feel like this about Camden. I grew up only a few miles from it and yet never felt safe there and don't really like visiting as an adult.

90% of the threads on here don’t achieve anything and are just opinion threads.

it’s a good thing that people come on here to defend their towns and tell people there are nicer bits! It might change peoples opinions!

Fallulah · 06/01/2023 17:01

Stoke on Trent - I lasted two months. The traffic, the fact there didn’t seem to be any ‘nice’ areas (I got burgled more than once living in off campus halls) and the fact it doesn’t have any kind of heart/middle - it’s five different ‘towns’. And just the grey-ness!

I am not really a city person, but to be fair I lived in Birmingham for a few years after that and absolutely adored it!

hellswelshy · 06/01/2023 17:01

Ha I know what you mean op, I work not too far from where you were in Newport and as others have pointed out, it's not the best area. It can be an edgy kind of place, I've worked there for years, live outside of it though. Like most cities it has its horrible bits and also some good bits. Cardiff is similar, again I've worked and lived there too..only difference is that the bad areas are more spread out! As my old mate says though, places only seem weird when it's not YOUR weird place 😉

SnowlayRoundabout · 06/01/2023 17:02

There are 14 Newports in the UK. Which one are you talking about?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 06/01/2023 17:03

I got a very strange feeling when I visited Dawlish in Devon.

Haveagentlechristmas · 06/01/2023 17:03

UK as a whole right now tbh 😂😭.. Desolate and shockingly expensive. Bereft if culture. Unless you have money to do stuff.

GCAcademic · 06/01/2023 17:04

Flintshire, a couple of small towns therein which I won't mention as it might be outing since I was dating someone from there. It's the only place I've been to where people have openly stared at me the street, which I was told would have been because I'm not white.

Manchester - men staggering and puking in the street, presumably spice addicts. I never want to go there again.

NottanOtter · 06/01/2023 17:04

My hometown and nearby places usually get mentioned on these threads, and while I don't disagree that the atmosphere can be oppressive at times, it's because there's high unemployment, a sense of community lost with the industries that defined the area, and a general lack of hope. If you get to know the place well enough to see and care about the positives, they're there. But it's hard to paper over major stuff like that with hanging baskets.

Well, it's just my opinion, but I think it demonstrates that you are a bit of a dick if you are posting to say how shit a place knowing that you are running down a place that other posters will inevitably live in.

IglesiasPiggl · 06/01/2023 17:06

Doncaster. So depressing.

It's in chat. It's not supposed to achieve anything. Where do you live that is so awful then?

WisteriaLodge · 06/01/2023 17:07

East Sussex, there's a weird vibe in the whole county, I don't know what but it feels so odd to me, not horrible but it feels like there's a cloud hanging over me when I'm there. I can tell straight away when I've crossed the border back in to West Sussex the feeling goes straight away!

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 06/01/2023 17:07

Fucking Watford. Driving round there is like the seventh circle of hell.

NeverGonnaNot · 06/01/2023 17:08

Yes I was going to say which Newport as there is one in west Wales too which is completely different.

I considered buying a house in Newport once upon a time as I was moving out of London and the house prices were relatively cheap. No one had a good word to say about it.
